Nick and Jana a huge thank you! My family and I stayed at the camp for 4days in fabulous accommodation with excellent food and it truly felt at though we were house guests with people we had known for years, yet they were totally professional at the same time, Great hospitality, and all staff went out of their way to be friendly and courteous. The safari experiences were different every day and our guide Emmanuel worked out what made us tick very quickly. We met such a variety of people and the one table for dinner gave us a great chance to meet them in a relaxed setting. It was my 19 year old daughter who came up with the description 'relaxed and elegant' which sums things up perfectly.

Great ethos by owners Nomad Tanzania and we do hope that we will be back there again. The monkeys hovering for morning shortbread were priceless; fishing on the river cruise after a bush breakfast a highlight as we're sundowners on Liz's Hill not to mention a swim in the hot springs ... Oh no point in typing a list, everything was wonderful!! Make a fabulous G &T too!!

Room Tip: We only saw our two rooms (suites 1 and 2), both were excellent and overlooked the river.

We visited Sand Rivers Selous in July 2013. We were absolutely enchanted with the camp and our safaris. Jana, Nick and their staff made us feel very comfortable and welcome. The camp is well managed and also has a family atmosphere. We were delighted with our cottage. Being open to the wilderness allowed us to have an amazing experience. We listened to hippos, elephants, birds, etc. each night. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom was a lovely surprise.
The guides were amazing. Ernest and Laz took very good care of us and on wonderful safaris. We saw many and varied types of animals. We never expected to see so many hippos, let alone crocodiles, lions, gazelles, giraffes, etc.
The food and picnics were lovely as were the sundown drinks at picturesque sites. We absolutely recommend staying at Sand River Selous. If anyone is planning a safari in Africa and wonders if they should add Selous game reserve it definitely is worth the trip for the variety of experiences and landscape and Sand Rivers is the camp to ensure you have the best visit.

We stayed at the lodge for 4 days in June 2013. Fantastic facilities and wonderful view. Nic and Jana were very friendly hosts and Nic is a fantastic guide. We really liked some of the other staff as well, especially Hamza, who normally manages the adjunct facility but guided us several times on the river and took us fishing as well. The reason we give it only 3 stars is that it seemed that they were trying to save money at the expense of our experience. We did not have hot water the entire time we were there, in spite of talking to Nic about it twice. One day for lunch it was great, with BBQ ribs, then the next day there was no meat at all- just 2 or 3 salads. They ran out of some of the normal liquor you would expect to find and there were other small but annoying things. We had just come from the Nomad camps at Lamai and the mobile camp, and they had none of these issues in spite of having similar challenges and set up. Don't know if they are going through hard times at Rivers, or just being managed differently, but it was the only part of our total experience that did not really meet our expectations. Having said all that, the facilities and nature are spectacular- but they need to raise their game a notch to get to the level of the other camps.

*We apologise that this response posted on 6th August originally appeared against another review.

Thank you very much for taking the time to review Sand Rivers Selous, and for bringing up some points where we might improve the experience we offer. I'm delighted that you enjoyed the Selous, Hamza's guiding and the lodge, however I'm sorry that there were a couple of areas where we didn't live up to expectations. I'm pleased to have the opportunity to respond to the points you've raised here.

Our hot water is provided by a solar system at each room which is normally perfectly adequate. The one drawback is that sometimes it doesn't provide sufficient hot water for both a morning and evening shower for two people. I've checked with Nic and Jana and they confirm that they investigated the water issue while you were staying in camp and found no problem with the system other than the fact that the water needs to run for a while before the hot water comes through the pipes. That said, they've gone round all the rooms ensuring that the bush is well clear of the panels and checking that they all work properly.

We've designed our menus in each of our camps to take into account the particularities of the areas and properties and in the Selous, we've deliberately opted for some lighter lunchtime meals with some tasty vegetarian main dishes (I believe you had carrot baklava during your stay...a particular favourite!). Everyone has different preferences and we certainly want to ensure that we provide a diverse and interesting menu that caters for most tastes - it's certainly not a cost saving strategy but a plan based on our experience of what people enjoy. We're looking into how we can tweak the menu in response to your feedback so hopefully future guests will continue to enjoy what our chefs serve up.

We're really sorry that our bar ran out of rum and vodka. There's no excuse for this and we've addressed it with our storekeeper so it will hopefully not happen again.

We're always keen to get constructive feedback and should there be anything else you'd like to chat about, please do drop us an email on info@nomad-tanzania.com.

Warm wishes and we look forward to welcoming you back to Tanzania soon.

We loved the camp and all the staff were fantastic. Nothing was too much trouble.
The diverse terrain was fascinating. Sometimes plains, then bush then palm woodlands. The view from the terrace over the river was breathtaking. Thoroughly recommend.

If you want to feel like you are outdoors, listen to hippos at night, watch monkeys from your open air room but still sleep in complete comfort, you won't be disappointed! Sand Rivers is so wonderfully remote that if you see another vehicle during the same the park feels crowded that day. The river safaris by boat are unique to this reserve and very special whether early in the morning or for sunset. The staff, guides, food, and location are second to none. Nick and Yanna, the new managers, are a very special couple that enhance the experience with their love for the African bush country. Don't forget to ask Nick to pull out his guitar for some evening entertainment.

Room Tip: With a view of the river, there's not a bad spot in camp!

Recently spent three nights here with my wife and son (aged 8) and from the moment we arrived at Kiba airstrip to be met by our wonderful guide Moussa, until the moment we left, we could not have asked for more.

The new manager Nick showed us around our hillside lodge, No2, which was open to the elements and animals so my son lost no time in getting to know how to use the air horn and leopard picture for scaring off the monkeys should they invade at 2am !!

The location is stunning, set right on the banks of the mile wide river Rufiji, which is itself teaming with crocs and hippos and all manner of river life, that you can sit and watch whilst you have breakfast.
It was amazing to wake up every morning to the incredible views and a dawn chorus of hippos, monkeys and birds all chattering away.
On our first drive we saw a large herd of Elephants , including one who mock charged us !! lots of Giraffes, Lions up close and almost personal , Impala by the dozen and a host of birds and other animals....and all on the first drive.
Next day was a River Safari and saw many Hippos and Crocs and monkeys along the river, well worth doing!! Third day we saw yet more crocs, elephants ,wildebeest and other animals, all spotted by our excellent guide Moussa who even took us for a dip in a VERY hot, hot spring right in the middle of the bush much to my sons amazement. Could it get any better? Yes, as en route back to the lodge Moussa would crack open an ice cold beer for us and nibbles as we sat stunned.
Nick has great ideas for his tenure here and I'll be interested to see how he can improve on what is already perfection in every way. We will be back.

Room Tip: Villa no 2 is right in the middle with great views over river and beyond.

We have just come back from a holiday which included four nights at Sands River. This was the first stop on our first safari holiday. Mark and Chloe could not have been more hospitable and made us feel immediately welcome and in good hands. Our "room" was extremely comfortable and well equipped, the food was far beyond what we had expected (I must have put on pounds in those few days!) and our guide, Ernest, was exceptional. He was so enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Our two walking safari trips with him were probably the highlight of our stay - not least, I'm afraid to say, the wonderful lakeside breakfast that was waiting for us at the end of our two and half hour morning walk. Eating a huge cooked breakfast whilst watching the crocodiles, hippos, storks and sea eagles - an experience we never expected but truly appreciated.
Thank you, Sands River for a wonderful stay.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
When Richard Bonham built Sand Rivers, he was offered any area in the Northern Selous. There were good reasons why this site, overlooking the mile wide Rufiji River, was the only place he wanted to be. At the heart of an intricate network of sand river channels, oxbow lakes and open plains, Sand Rivers opens a window on the private lives of Africa's big mammals. Creep up on elephant as they wallow in hidden lakes; drift silently by boat down the river at dusk or sleep out under the stars at night in our unique flycamp. With just eight open-fronted rooms looking out over the Rufiji River, Sand Rivers offers variety, spontaneity and a gradual immersion in a seductively wild part of Southern Tanzania. ... more   less
