We stayed at Amara for 6 nights in June 2013. To say we loved it is a complete understatement. Set right on the bank of a river teeming with Hippos and Crocs, it is an oasis in the midst of the Bush. Nothing was too much trouble for the Management team Peter and Anita and their wonderful staff, from dealing with our daughter's food allergy to arranging dinner in the bush to celebrate her 21st birthday. What a memory! The game drives were personally tailored to our desires and the guides were fantastic and with great senses of humour!! Our son enjoyed learning about tracking with them. Whilst we didnt see prolific amounts of game, what we did see was fantastic and totally natural including lions and a pack of wild dogs. Simply cannot recommend Amara enough if you want a true Safari experience.

Thank you for your glowing review of Amara, our staff and your whole experience with us we appreciate you taking the time to do this. 6 nights must have given you a wonderfully relaxing safari experience and I am so pleased to read that you are leaving Amara Selous with such special memories. I am delighted to hear that you had quality time with the wild dogs and lion, we have been getting very regular sightings since we opened for the season in June. What you get at Amara is quality from start to finish and I am very pleased to hear that you agree with us. I hope we can welcome your family back to Amara in due course, best wishes Simon

I had the opportunity to spend three days in Selous at Amara over Christmas with family and it was nothing short of phenomenal. We were very pleasantly greeted by our gracious hosts, Peter and Anita, who made our stay comfortable and relaxed. The tents were clean, prepared, and perfectly situated along a river on the reserve. The service, food, hospitality, and amenities were superior. The pool and resting areas were no exception. On safari, the drivers (highly experienced and great sense of humour these guys) exposed us to loads of impala, herds of elephants, wild dogs, baboons, giraffes, and a few other surprises (clue: they roar). The reserve is non-commercialized so you don't feel like you're just another "customer" being on tour. They took us off the beaten path genuinely searching for resting spots.. at one point, we experienced a fountain of butterflies spring from the bushes and flutter around us dancing out of rhythm. We’ve been on Safari in the Serengeti before; however it was nothing as wild as this. BBQ dinners prepared in the wild, non-commercialized superior luxury, unparalleled hospitality... Amara is the place to be in Tanzania. Book a few days. You will love it.

From the word go our holiday was fabulous. Met at the airstrip with cooling cocktails, then driven a short distance to the lodge. Seemed like all the staff and Anita and Peter were there to greet us. Such a warm welcome. Our room (no2) was gorgeous. The bedroom was a tent, but not your ordinary tent! Windows on 3 sides of mosquito net, curtains to draw at night to keep in the cool air from the a/c! The view from the bed down to the river kept us entranced, watching hippos, elephant, water buck and many birds. The shower room had the same view, a large wet room style shower 2 basins, toilet and an outside shower. Endless soaps and lotions, bug spray for body and room was provided. Water is kept in a cooler and topped up as needed. The room butler will bring drinks to your room. Dinner is at 20.00, meet in the open lounge for pre dinner drinks and a chat/ check emails etc! Dinner is served in different locations around the lodge, lit by candles and lamps. Very romantic. Our high light was the bush BBQ dinner. What an amazing evening watching sheet lightening in the distance, hearing lions and hippos roaring in the bush and seeing the Milky Way. What splendid surprise, really moving.
You will be wakened up with tea/coffee and biscuits before the game drive. Breakfast is usually had on the game drive at a suitable spot. Amazing. If you take a full day drive lunch is taken on the drive too. The driver/guide gave us the most exciting days. We saw so many animals and birds, close up. Even a leopard!
The afternoon drive ends with a "sun downer" drink by the river, serving your favourite cocktail and small canapes. The morning walking safari is well worth doing, eg we saw where a baby hippo had been born only a couple of hours previously! A wet patch in the shape of a baby hippo! The guide's knowledge is comprehensive. Our guide Joseph had a great attitude. He knew our interests, so tried his best to find the animals and birds we really wanted to see and many more on the way.
Amara must be one of the best safari experiences ever, we seldom saw another vehicle. We felt we had the whole reserve to ourselves.
Well done Amara team (Simon, Anita, Peter and the team in Tanzania), we can't wait to return.

Thank you for taking the time to share so much of your experience with other travellers, we agree with you we think Amara Selous gives one of the best safari experiences ever! It sounds like you had wonderful adventures in the Selous and it has left its mark on you. Spending time game viewing in the wilderness of the Selous is the “real” Africa and it sounds like you had lots of exciting sightings and spent quality time with what you saw which is what the Selous is all about. We think we’ve created something very special at Amara and I am so pleased you agree. It is a romantic little bolt hole that really is a one off! The bush dinners are fabulous and we always get such great feedback from people, lions roaring and lightening wow what an adventure! I hope we can welcome you back in the future, best wishes Simon

We were at the hotel for the end of the year. It is not a season you should have a lot of animals. Despite that we have seen lions, zebras, giraffes, leopard, hippos and many more. You might not see big quantity of animals together but you are sure to not have 10 cars around you.
Hotel is extremely well managed by very knowledgeable South African couple and staff trained by them. Everybody speaks English and understands. (it is not always the case in Tanzania)
In the hot season it is good to have early safaris means that you leave the hotel around 6.00 AM and you have your breakfast on the field. (Everything is prepared by hotel including your very british picnic basket and furniture). It is good to do 1st day a safari around the hotel (morning and afternoon), 2nd day walking safari (which allows you to understand what you see), 3rd day whole day long safari (you leave in the morning and you come in the night) and the 4th day again around the hotel. The fishing is not a lot of interest unless you love fishing.
Room are very well designed. There is no door or window. Everything is a tent closes with zipper. There is an air-condition (very silent) and it is very useful when it is very hot. The pillows and bed covers are extremely comfortable.
There are iPod -iphone charging station and mosquito repellents in the room.
The price is all inclusive, you do not stress what will cost what.
The food is good and you are constantly asked if you have special wishes. It is possible to have cereals for breakfast.
It is a very relaxed and pleasant trip.

Room Tip: Room 1 very close to the river and off the ground. You wake up with hippos and birds noises. The ri...

Thank you for your review, I am so pleased to read that you saw so much good game around us, the whole beauty of the Selous is having experiences like you had with the game on your own and no other vehicles, real raw Africa that's very private! I am pleased you liked all the activities which kept your days varied. I am glad you like the design of the rooms, the beds were custom made to be so big and waking up to the sound of hippo is a great way to start your day! I hope we can welcome you back to Amara in the future, best wishes Simon

We booked a two week trip through Imagine Africa who arranged all our safaris and accommodation extremely well and efficiently.

Peter and Anita who run the camp are just perfect hosts and laid back. Nothing is too much trouble - they even leant me clothes when my bag failed to show. How do you describe a massage on your own tent terrace overlooking a river of hippos ? Or the cool plunge pool outside your tent ?

Game is not as abundant but what you get is quality - we saw a pride of 8 lions and a 24 strong pack of wild dogs. Food is just exceptional as are the locations dinner was served. Loved the free port in the tent and the photo Peter gave us of a wild dog he had taken, as a leaving present

Room Tip: Tent1 1 and 2 are closest to the main building. There is a 2 way radio in you tent to order drinks...

Thank you for taking the time to review us and what a wonderful review thank you! Imagine Africa are excellent specialists and I am delighted everything went so well and exceeded your expectations. We think Amara is very special and unique and I am so pleased Amara has left her mark on you! I agree having massages on your terrace listening the river rapids and hippo is out of this world! The plunge pools also allow you to wind down and relax in the bush! You were very lucky seeing such a large group of wild dog, I agree game viewing in the Selous is real raw Africa and very private allowing you quality time with the wildlife and you can let your shoulders drop almost straight away. I am delighted that Anita and Peter and the team's service have left such wonderful memories with you. I hope we can welcome you back at some point, very best wishes Simon

Amara Selous is a fantastic camp, with extremely high levels of personal service in a lovely setting on the banks of the river Ruaha. My wife and I visited during our two week honeymoon in Tanzania and fell in love with the camp – it was the highlight of our trip.

Peter and Anita are fantastic hosts who really take a great interest in your stay - they are clearly keen that everyone who stays at Amara has a really special, unique time. We found the staff at camp charming and professional (not always an easy combination to achieve?) serving up lavish meals in different locations throughout the camp. Enoch, our guide for the majority of our time out of camp was equally excellent - imparting his encyclopaedic knowledge for the bush and its wildlife, whilst allowing us space to inhale in the wild beauty of the Selous.

Visitors to the Selous in general should probably bare in mind that game may not be as abundant as, say, that of the Serengeti. But what you get in return is privacy and a sense of adventure which we hugely appreciated. Add in the luxury, wonderful personal service and interesting people that man the camp at Amara Selous, and it's hard not to have a really great experience.

Thank you for your great review, I am delighted to read that your stay at Amara was the highlight of your honeymoon. Peter and Anita run the lodge with genuine warmth and compassion and as you arrive you feel instantly welcome and know you will enjoy yourself. Likewise they have trained the staff and guides well and I am so pleased you enjoyed all the hospitality from start to finish. Private dining sets us apart from other lodges and eating in different locations makes meals a delight above and beyond the quality of the food. Game viewing in the Selous is all about quality I agree, guests generally don’t see any other vehicles on game drives and when you see game you get quality time on your own with it which makes everything extra special. Thank you for choosing Amara, I hope we can welcome you back for a special anniversary in due course. Best wishes Simon

Our 4 day stay exceeded our expectations which, as this was our sixth safari, were high. The staff were exceptionally well trained and at all times attentive and unobtrusive. The accommodation was spacious, comprehensively equipped and meticulously serviced. We looked forward to mealtimes and were always delighted especially when dinner was set up on the river bank or around the pool. As the short rains had not arrived before our visit wildlife was scarce but our guide went to great lengths to find what we were most interested in. The only negative aspect was the condition of the roads and the tsetse flies all beyond the control of the camp management!
