“Kindness, Generosity and Animals!”
Reviewed February 1, 2014

Our family of four (boys aged 10 & 14) stayed at Selous Great water Lodge for three nights in late December. We took the Cultural Tour option, which allowed us a variety of experiences including amazing wildlife viewing, a wander through a local village, a lovely boat trip and a tour through local farms along the river. As others have mentioned, new owners Bronson and Susanne were wonderful and attentive hosts. The accommodation in a safari tent overlooking a water hole was superb, as was the food (we even had pizza, which my youngest son is still talking about). In addition to all else, what sets Selous Great Water Lodge apart is the generosity of spirit displayed at all times. Cold drinking water was always at hand (we went through a lot!), meal portions were plentiful, and Bronson and Susanne were always available to help with the smallest things. Of course, the wildlife viewing was nothing less than spectacular (and our driver/guide, Emmanuel was incredible), and the view of the river from the bluff above was absolutely mesmerising (a cold beer in hand!). Stay at Selous Great Water Lodge - you won't regret it!

We've been twice and will probably go again. A two night stay means you can take a boat trip up river to see a variety of bird life and animals (mostly hippos), drive all day in the game reserve, and take a walking tour down to the river's edge before you depart on your final day. The staff are wonderful and the setting just right. Relaxing time.

If you can get the family tent then you get to watch baboons and other wildlife coming to the watering hole; lots of African-bush noise at night!

We spent four nights at the lodge. A friendly, clever and helpful driver (Khatibu), picked us up at the airport i Dar Es Salaam and brought us to the lodge. At the Lodge we got a brand new tent with a lovely view to the river. Susan and Bronson are adorable hosts. They found time to make their guests feel welcome. Our guide Patrick was really clever, and spoke English very well. The food was lovely. We will recomend the game drive, boat safari and walking safari if you can spend time for that. We travelled with our two daughters at 12 and 14 years. They also loved the experience.

I spent three nights at the lodge in the tree house tent. From the pick up in Dar Es Salaam to the final morning when we watched a warthog and troop of baboons at the waterhole outside our tent the experience was amazing. Proprietors Susanne and her partner made us feel welcome and the staff is incredibly attentive without being intrusive. The tent was huge and comfortable, no electricity except after nightfall when a generator kicks in and you can run fans and charge your devices :) It is LOUD with animal noises throughout the night, my friend used earplugs, I managed to sleep through all but the loudest (bush babies shrieking!) an incredible experience. Great food well prepared served with a fantastic view of the river. The safari was a highlight but the river excursion to the farming community downriver was also interesting and really enjoyable. Our guide Patrick was very knowledgeable and loaded us with animal and plant facts. I can't believe I only paid $770 for this including the five plus return trip from Dar. Absolute value for money and I'm so glad we chose Selous and this lodge. Tips - bring a flashlight, be considerate when taking pictures of people (ask first), if you stay in the tent be brave and sleep with the flaps up for breeze and proximity to animals!

Owners Susanne and Bronson are very welcoming and helpful, the tents are spacious and comfortable, the food is excellent (don't miss the duck and the beef filet), and the sunset view over the Rufiji River from the restaurant/bar area is spectacular!

My fiancé and I stayed for 3 nights/4 days at the lodge in one of the elevated tree tents overlooking the waterhole. The tent, while it was big and spacious, gave a very close feeling to nature as you could hear every shuffle and sound outside. It was a fantastic experience waking up with a band of baboons by the waterhole playing and rumbling around as they passed by.

John and his staff were very genuine, friendly and welcoming and the food was amazing. Everything was very well organized from the time we were picked up in Dar an throughout the stay. We chose a boat safari, game drive safari and a cultural tour in a nearby village. The guides made it very interesting and we learned a lot. Both my fiancé and I agree that we wouldn't have changed a thing- except perhaps stay another few days.

Room Tip: I would choose staying in a tent by the water hole again - it was a nice experience. I recommend bri...

Thanks John & co for hosting us at the Great Water Lodge. We must have been the most noisy guests you have ever had. 10 of us on a family holiday took over the whole lodge for a few nights. We had an amazing time. So very accommodating, thank you for meeting our every demand, such an array of food all the time. The boat trip on our first evening there was lovely saw some crocs and lots of birds. Over the next couple of days we visited the park and saw lots of animals. It was a very unique experience, so secluded and feels like you are on a true safari.

The property itself was lovely, we occupied both tents and one of the huts, so very spacious.
John made all the arrangements for us from Dar to Selous and it just felt so seamless.
Would thoroughly recommend this property, don't stay anywhere else!

Thank you!!

Room Tip: stay in the tents - they have an excellent feel to them

Selous Great Water Lodge* is located outside Africa's largest and wildest protected sanctuary for game. Here a million large animals roam amid a spectacular landscape that has far fewer human visitors than other reserves. The lodge is right beside the mighty Rufiji River, lifeblood of the Selous. Comfort and security are combined with the sheer excitement of being in such a place! We are an intimate, friendly lodge and pride ourselves on our genuine hospitality, offering a personal service to guests, and all at a very affordable price. From the outskirts of Dar es Salaam we are only five hours away by road. Otherwise you can fly to a nearby airstrip, perhaps on your way to or from Zanzibar or Mafia Island. Whichever way, we can organise it for you. Activities include private game drives with an excellent guide, river boat safaris into the reserve, riverbank walks through the forest, and cultural tours to villages and to meet local people who live from farming and fishing. Accommodation comprises of four luxury en-suite tents; two tents have a stunning view over the Rufiji river and two tents overlook the bush and an animal water hole. Enjoy pre-dinner drinks while admiring the spectacular view over the Rufiji river. After dinner you can sit around our fireplace under the stars, listening to the sound of the river and animals in the night. ... more   less
