Selous Great Water Lodge
Reviewed September 28, 2013

My wife and I spent a few days here, staying in a Luxury Tent. We had the time of our lives. John and his team took excellent care of us. the food was excellent and guides provided were very knowledgeable and helpful. Patrick, in particular, would give David Attenbourough a run for his money.

We had 2 days safari and a cultural day also which was brilliant. Selous's reserve is not crowded like some others, we saw very few other tourists but a huge range of animals.

Thanks John for a great time !

Room Tip: I would recommend a luxury tent - you will wake every morning to view of a small water hole - we saw...

Our three night stay here gave us a fascinating insight into both the wildlife and the people of the area. The lodge website is honest and John helped us plan our trip and once we arrived we had the warmest of welcomes and thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this simple but perfect place. The other guests were great company and we thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. Go for the four night stay if you can and make sure you do the river trip. All the staff are friendly and charming, the food delicious and the accommodation spotless. Patrick the camp guide knows all there is to know about the wildlife and vegetation and our driver guide Michael was the best lion spotter ever. Thanks for a wonderful experience.

Room Tip: We were in the mud hut with a view through the trees of the river, very spacious and comfortable, th...

The Selous Great Water Adventure of 4 nights/5days was truly wonderful. The staff are out of this world- friendly, competent, helpful, intelligent and effective. John is a most convivial, gracious and inclusive host. The wildlife spotting was very good with our personable guide, Michael, and we also had the pleasure of Patrick's social commentary and superb bird knowledge. We can't speak highly enough of our time here. DO go!

Only 5 hours by road from Dar es Salaam, the Selous Great Water Lodge is a haven from the hustle and bustle of city life!
Situated on the bend of the Rufiji river the views are breath taking. We had a fantastic 2 night and 3 day land, boat and walking safari!
The rooms and entire lodge are very clean and staff incredibly welcoming and efficient. The food all home made and delicious.
Whether you are a tourist or resident in Tanzania I would thoroughly recommend staying here.
We will DEFINITELY be coming back, thank you John!

We stayed three nights with John and his welcoming staff. The cuisine is very good, simple home made food and helpful staff that accommodate any request. The simple lodge exceeds the expectations due to the convivial nature of the host. The Rufiji river is majestic and in of itself is a reason to visit this corner of Africa. The Selous game reserve is a stunning wildness that is less travelled and all the better for it.

This is a great place to stay. It is close to the Selous Game Reserve which firstly has plenty of game and secondly is quite isolated so the frenetic activity of places like the Serengeti are not evident; one can expact to see four our five other vehicles in a day. The lodge is a very well run bush camp and John does a wonderful job of making sure his guests are all looked after very well with great meals overlooking the spectacular Rufiji river. Also Patrick, the guide provided by the lodge, is a fount of information: not only is he able to identfy every bird and beast that one might come across but he also knows their habits; very impressive

Do not expect à five star lodge but the basic ,but spotless, amenities are more than compensated by the beautiful setting, friendly staff, and John, the owner who is very helpful and knows quite well the area of the Selous Park. We must also mention the excellent work of the lodge s cook. We highly reccomend this place.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Selous Great Water Lodge* is located outside Africa's largest and wildest protected sanctuary for game. Here a million large animals roam amid a spectacular landscape that has far fewer human visitors than other reserves. The lodge is right beside the mighty Rufiji River, lifeblood of the Selous. Comfort and security are combined with the sheer excitement of being in such a place! We are an intimate, friendly lodge and pride ourselves on our genuine hospitality, offering a personal service to guests, and all at a very affordable price. From the outskirts of Dar es Salaam we are only five hours away by road. Otherwise you can fly to a nearby airstrip, perhaps on your way to or from Zanzibar or Mafia Island. Whichever way, we can organise it for you. Activities include private game drives with an excellent guide, river boat safaris into the reserve, riverbank walks through the forest, and cultural tours to villages and to meet local people who live from farming and fishing. Accommodation comprises of four luxury en-suite tents; two tents have a stunning view over the Rufiji river and two tents overlook the bush and an animal water hole. Enjoy pre-dinner drinks while admiring the spectacular view over the Rufiji river. After dinner you can sit around our fireplace under the stars, listening to the sound of the river and animals in the night. ... more   less
