“Extraordinary lodge, location and service”
Reviewed January 31, 2013

The Selous game reserve is a great alternative to the busy Serengeti. It's very green and less developed, with more wildlife and nature to discover than we have expected.
The Mivumo lodge is built right on the river bank, has beautifully decorated 5-star luxury rooms with king-size beds, a private plunge pool and outdoor showers with views on the river and the hippos.
And there's more to see just outside the lodge: elephants, giraffes, leopards, water buffalos, zebras, pelicans, impalas, monkeys, waterbucks etc etc... all on 2 safari days (first by jeep than by boat). The only thing we didn't encounter were lions; but we could live with that.
The staff is super friendly, experienced and helpful, as well as the tour guides. And the food is good.
There's a pool and cocktail bar with wonderful views, which was great for refreshments in the afternoon.

Our vacation was organized by Africa Rose Travel, perfect service and good rates.

This holiday was planned with the assistance of Linda Holden of Holidays Please and nothing was too much trouble. We gave Linda our preferences and she far exceeded our expectations. I had recently recovered from a serious illness and I wanted to go away somewhere special to thank my husband for his love and support throughout my treatment. Linda listened and certainly gave us that special something. This hotel was luxury in the middle of the African bush. Right from the moment we landed on the grass airstrip to be met by our personal guide Jumbe until we left we were treated like royalty. All the staff were excellent and the rooms were very comfortable. My husband says it is the most comfortable bed he has ever slept in,not something you expect in the African bush. Food was excellent and the extra touches by the staff very much appreciated. Would certainly return and recommend on every facility

We stayed at the mivumo River lodge for part of our honeymoon, which was organised for us by Matt Gammon at Imagine Africa. he was fantastic at finding the perfect trip for us.
On arrival at the selous reserve we were given a wonderful welcome, nothing was too much trouble. the chef made us a congratulation cake and a bottle of wine was in our room. We were spoilt from day one. On the first day we went on an amazing river boat safari where we saw loads of hippos, crocodile and an amazing variety of different birds. We also did two game drives which were incredible we saw beautiful Giraffes, zebras,Lions, buffalos, impalas, it was fantastic. We had a very knowledable guide called Jumbe who was brilliant ! he made our honeymoon extra special by organising an unexpected sun down on an island near our lodge where we were served drinks and got to watch the sunset, it was so romantic and made our stay there all the more magical!

The food is fantastic and service exquiste. The accomodation was stunning and for someone who is not good with bugs this was a great option as you have an elevated timber room which is sealed so this keeps out any nasty bugs.

This has to be the most amazing place I have ever stayed in and would highley recommend it !

For an experience of a lifetime you must go here

Mivomo Lodge is not what you would expect to find on safari in Africa. Rather than tents in the bush it has elevated timber rooms with airconditioning and glass windows looking over a wide river at the bottom of a thick tree lined gorge. It was a stunning setting, the sounds of the animals and birds amplified by the gorge. Staff were very attentive and polite, food was excellent, the Manager, Nickson looked after us brilliantly and produced a fantastic agenda for us including boat rides on the river, a fantastic game drive and suggested we stay at the sister camp, Selous Luxury Camp, to experience a total contrast in accomodation which was the perfect way to end our 2 week safari.
Chris, our guide, was excellent, great to be with and put in a huge effort to show us everything on our full day game drive. Selous Game reserve is different to The Maasai Mara and Serengeti- we felt like we were the only people out there, we were amazed by the continuous changes in vegetation and animal life and felt the animals had not yet been conditioned to vehicles as in other places we have been.
A luxurious and special way to see Africa.

Mivumo River Lodge is probably one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in around the world. The bungalow is tastefully decorated and huge- complete with a sitting area, large bathroom and a private deck and jacuzzi with amazing views of the Rufiji River. The staff was just wonderful- very personable and helpful. Everything was flawlessly arranged, including lovely sundowner cocktails on a sandbar right on the river. Food was also great- fresh and creative- and the chef had vegetarian options readily available, which was a big bonus. The bar options were also great. Overall a wonderful experience for those traveling to Selous- could not be better. We would love to come back and would highly recommend this hotel. It was a very personalized, great experience.

When you look for contrast of luxury and life surrounded by the wildlife, go to Dar es Salaam, take a 45 minute small-aircraft flight and land in Selous on an airstrip in the middle of nowhere. Your personal guide will meet you there in a 4x4 Jeep and 30 minutes later you find yourself at the Mivumo River Lodge. The rest can't be described - you just have to experience it.

Room Tip: They also ha a Presidential Suite which accommodates 6 persons.

Fabulous accommodation, very comfy bed and big spacious room, outdoor shower, private plunge pool, lovely staff nothing too much trouble. Food could have been better - a bit 1980's for my taste. Game viewing was great when we got to it, but a bit of a bumpy journey to and from the main areas.Lovely river boat trips and we saw leopard on both of our trips. we were the only guests for 2 nights, then another couple came, so if you want a bit of company then choose when you go, we went at 1/2 term with our son but it was too quiet for us.

Room Tip: I think they are all equally good.
