Lake Manze Tented Camp, Selous Game Reserve

Magical location, excellent staff, lovely comfortable tents with plenty of room and great verandas. It's not at all unusual to wake up to an elephant or hippo grazing within a few feet of your tent. Food ok but you are in the bush after all.
This was our third visit in 3 years so clearly we are extremely satisfied with the camp. Booking direct couldn't be easier and the company that owns the camp also own Coastal Airlines which fly to a nearby airstrip so they will do the lot for you.
Long game drives with helpful and knowledgeable guides. The boat safaris are also not to be missed, We were lucky in seeing many animals including lions hunting and amazingly three different packs of wild dogs.Don't expect huge herds of animals that you get in the Serengeti but then don't expect to see many other tourists. When we followed a pack of 18 wild dogs there were only two other vehicles near us.This is the authentic safari experience. Wonderful!

This was our first safari and we thought it was fantastic. All the staff were very friendly. The tents were comfortable and clean. Everything was well organised and slick. Food was good too. The boat safaris are great because they are so relaxing. But we would recommend the full day safari trip to the hot springs. It was nice to see a new area. Definitely recommend for first time safari goers!!

Lake Manze camp lived up to all our expectations and we really felt we had had an authentic safari experience. The food was plentiful and excellent and all the staff were friendly and helpful. Our guide Adam went out of his way to ensure we had an amazing experience and saw everything we wanted to - well nearly, despite his best efforts, a leopard eluded us! It was just fabulous to have wild animals wandering through the camp and when on drives we were quite often the only vehicle in the area and the most we encountered in one place was 4. This is not a five star hotel but it is a five star experience.

I would highly advise a trip to Lake Manze Tented camp in the Selous. This is a wonderful experience with just enough of the creature comforts (like your own toilet and shower) but not so much that you forget you are in the middle of an African game preserve with thousands of wild animals around you. The number of camps and rooms, at least at this point, are limited, so you feel like you have a whole state or province to yourself and your campmates.

The staff was fantastic, especially Pippa and Tricia. The guides and drivers were very skilled, and interested in one having a excellent viewing experience. Just as an example, I had just finished a boat trip and was off the boat, and we saw elephants crossing upriver. The guide said jump back in the boat, and we went racing 20 meters up to the elephants as they crossed. I got an incredible experience, feet from the elephants, and a fantastic video, thanks to his spontaneity.

I saw a ton of wildlife, including lions, elephants, giraffes, hyenas, storks, vultures, impala, crocodile, hippos, birds of all types, elk, zebra, water buffalo, and other.

If you are in Dar or just in the country for a short period, this is definitely worth it, reasonably priced, and possible with a 2-3 day window. Food was good, and the setting with elephants and hippos wandering by was surreal. My campmates who had been to Ruaha, said that park was also extremely worthwhile.

Manze Camp is what I would define a 'no-nonsense' place. The managers are very kind and efficient without being overly fretting on their guests, the tents are comfortable and clean, the showers are fantastic and the meals cover everyone's needs. The camp is set along the shores on one of the many lakes long the Rufiji river giving an easy access to water activities and is a spectacular nocturnal theatre of hippos grazing away at your feet. The game viewing is absolutely outstanding, and that is what for me is all about being in the bush. Being able to watch wildogs moving in a line at sunset, or a coalition of six male young-ish lions, having a fish jumping in our boat while slowly moving along the lake shore, or being followed by the carmine bee eaters while driving cannot be matched by any frilly safari accessory.
I would highly recommend Manze camp to any no-nonsense traveller, it was exactly what I wanted. Thank you so much to Pippa, Trish and Phil for the good company.

This was our first safari trip and it was the start of our honeymoon. We definetely caught safari bug! Everything about Lake Manze Camp is so amazing. We were so close to the nature, because the camp is situated opposite the lake, so we could watch animals going down to the lake to drink water. At night we could hear animals walking around our tent. My husband felt "united with nature", but I found it a bit spooky.
The main highlight of the safari was waking up at about 06.30am and seeing three young lions in front of our tent. Two of them came close (I mean put their face against the mesh of the tent!!!). We have it captured on the video. We stayed flat on the bed, afraid to make a slight move or noise. Lions eventually left, but what an experience that was! It was the first time that lions stopped by in the camp, and that morning they caused a bit of chaos there!
All staff were very friendly and attentive. Manager Paul and lovely Pippa, all the drivers, guides and restaurant staff. After we have arrived, from the air strip we were taken on a game drive, and we saw so many anilmals!! Giraffes, zebras, impalas and of course lions!! On our second drive we saw wild dogs which are quite rare.
We stayed there for three and a half days and that was enough to see everything and go on drive safari, boat safari and a walking one. We recommend a full day drive safari, where you visit hot springs and Selous' grave.
Food was very good, home cooked and tasty. They do a very nice setting in the evening, for all to sit around the big table and share food. Eating under the stars, sharing safari stories, what could be better!!
I can definetely say that Lake Manze Camp will give you the best experience of safari. It is not too luxurious with infinity pool etc, but not too basic, so you feel comfortable, but you really know you are amongst animals.

This is a wild place yet comfortable. Me and my children spent three nights there and were more than pleased. It's very satisfying to write a nice report because it was a truly, truly memorable stay!
The tents were nice with a bathroom at the end. Wildlife was all around it! As soon as we had checked in and was in our tents we heard noise from outside. Just outside was an elephant! Another day we saw monkeys and impala just outside. Every night we heard the hippos passing by sounding like the pigs in angry birds! One night while we were having dinner leopard killed an impala 20 m from our tent. So yes if you are looking for a wild place this is it. However, there were plenty of masai guards and they were very alert and helpful so we never felt uncomfortable or afraid.
The game drive was very good. The place looks like the garden of Eden and there were plenty of wild life. We saw most things except wild dogs, but some other guests saw them. We had our own chauffeur and own guide and they were both very good indeed. The good thing compared with national parks is that you can drive anywhere in the bush. We also took a boat tour and went on walking safari. Both very good.
Food was delicious and all guests ate together outside on a long table with fires on each side of the table. We were there in december and at this time there were not much insects bothering us.
Finally, the people running the resort were all very nice and created a good atmosphere for everybody, both guests and staff.
