Kirurumu Manyara Lodge
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed December 1, 2011

No other tented lodge I stayed in Tanzania offered any security other than a coded safe. Rather than feeling vulnerable, I felt I was at good places. Ironically, once the staff at Kirurumu handed me a padlock, I lost my sense of security. At other place, I carried my valuable & passport with me as wise practice. At Kirurumu, the padlock gave me the sense that carrying my valuable & passport was a needed safe guard.

The Location: At the top of hill at Lake Manyara, a good 20-minute dirt road ride to the lodge. The lodge does offer a nice valley view. But a double row lay-out ensures half of the guest will not enjoy it.

The tents: Tents on the back row face the paved trail where the porters and night guards congregate. They converse day & night. Even in hush to normal tone, they could be bothersome if you enjoy an afternoon nap or if you are a light sleeper. The tents are canvas front connected to stucco bathrooms. In my tent, the bathroom’s cleanliness was marginal.

The Meals: Meals is served at your own table. Dinner follows a formula of stewed meat in a herb & spice source, a heap of starch, and a vegetable side. An adequate fair, nothing to savor.

Expectation: An non-descriptive location. Adequate tent accommodation with marginal bathroom facilities. So-so meals. Perhaps because of the separate dining arrangement, guests did not seem to care to socialize with other guests.

From the welcome to the goodbye, the night we spent at Kirurumu Manyara was faultless.

The warriors were helpful in taking our bags and making sure we got to and from our very comfortable tent.

The food was as you would expect though I didn't get what I asked for. There were two mains on the menu and I got the wrong one though being hungry and being happy with either didn't want to complain. Simple but good food.

The view in the morning of the lake was stunning, absolutely stunning.

We only spent one night at Kirurumu, but wish we'd stayed longer. The camp is quite remote, tucked back off of a bumpy dirt road overlooking the Great Rift Valley and Lake Manyara park. On top of the amazing views, we had excellent service, great food and a lovely, cozy tent.

The tents were basic, but clean and comfy, and spaced far enough from one another that privacy was not an issue. The "door" of the tent is actually a zippered mesh opening with a padlock, which was a charming touch, as were the dim electrical lanterns for lighting. The bathroom was large, clean, had 24/7 hot water, and was separated from the rest of the tent with a canvas flap. The bed was super comfy and warm in the cool night; probably the most plush, comfy bed of anywhere we stayed on our trip. From our balcony and bed we had amazing, unimpeded views of Lake Manyara.

The restaurant was a gorgeous open-air pavilion with amazing views and plenty of room for all of the guests without feeling crowded. The food was delicious and well presented. The only "flaw" with the food is that they fed us too much! The service at meal time was very attentive and friendly.

Unfortunately we didn't get to stay at the camp long enough to take advantage of the in-room massages, or to spend any real time lounging around enjoying the lodge. We were in and out quickly, but would love to return to spend more time enjoying the peaceful, beautiful atmosphere at Kirurumu.

Drive to Kirurumu and you are bumped along a rural road in Africa...to a beautiful tented lodge, hidden in the bush. The Masai tribal gentleman welcomes you and carries your bag to your room. You literally walk through the bush, on a lovely little paved path, well sign-posted, to your "room". The room is a large square tent with mosquito nets...you unzip the opening and walk into a little bit of luxury in the bush.
We had three single beds, beautifully appointed with lovely colorful sheets and four poster bed frames. There was a lot of room, and lots of electrical outlets too ( which was surprising but great for charging cameras etc).
The bathroom is a bit dark but lovely...also well appointed.
The veranda has comfortable furniture for sitting and reading or simply relaxing while looking at the view of the lake, way down below.
At night, one can see the lights of the town and realise how much bigger it is than we initially thought.
The restaurant is great. The food is beautifully presented, the salad was so pretty on my plate I didn't want to disturb it!!! The food is also very tasty...they obviously have a really good chef.
The bar area is nice too and there is a computer there for guest usage...free internet.
The staff are very welcoming and pleasant.
I would definitely recommend this lodge...great to get a 'tented lodge' experience.

Room Tip: if you don't want to walk far to the restaurant or lobby, tell them and they will put you in roo...

We stayed here as part of an 8-day safari with Duma Explorer. Duma did a great job setting everything up, so when we arrived at Kirurumu they were ready for us. We were greeted with a glass of juice and, once we checked in, Maasai people carried our bags to the tents.

The tents are gracefully decorated with beds with mosquito nets, lots of floor space, nice furniture, a nice deck that overlooks Lake Manyara Park and bathrooms with running water. We loved the tents and the views. It was a very comfortable nights' sleep and we could hear our Maasai guards singing quietly in the night.

There is a full bar and dining area, both are outside, but covered. The food was really good, maybe the best on our whole safari. The walkways can be a bit confusing, just follow your number, or ask someone. This was the most private place we stayed during our safari, as the tents are spread out.

The only downside to staying here is the long bumpy drive out the driveway. After a whole day of bumping around while on safari, it's tough to have this extra drive. Once you are there, it is totally worth it.

Room Tip: Ask for a room close to the restaurant for a shorter walk, far from the restaurant for more privacy

We stayed one night in this Tented Lodge, while visiting the Lake Manyara area. It is located on the edge of the Great Rift Valley and from the bar you have a very nice view over Lake Manyara.
The safari tents are large, with a large, basic bathroom. Basic in the sense of facilities. Everything you want there to be is there and it is nicely decorated and set up in a very spacious way. Our room had three single beds and we had plenty of space all around. It did took some effort finding a power outlet for our camera's, but in the end that was working fine as well.
The tent has a lot of windows (covered with mosquito nets) and that really gives you the feeling of sleeping outdoors.

Food is very good here, both breakfast and dinner. The Masai warriors take you to your tent after dark, because you are out in the wild.

Lights along the paths across the site are placed in such a way that nocturnal animals and birds trekking are not disturbed by it. A nice touch from an ecological point of view, I think.

We really liked this place. It is more our level of comfort in traveling and the 'open idea' of the tent is something we really like.
If we return to northern Tanzania, we will most definitely try to stay in places like this.

I have fond memories of the one night we stayed here. The rooms were comfortable, and the ambience relaxing. The food was good, and the staff friendly.
If you stay here make sure you spend as much time on the deck and enjoy the spectacular view. Sadly we checked in in the evening and only discovered it the next morning when it was time to leave. :-(
A very personal observation, but the Nile Perch we ate for supper was a fraught experience- this fish, introduced by German colonisers has decimated the ecology of Lake Victoria. Still, probably better to eat it than to let it degrage the lake even further. ;-)
