My wife and I stayed here overnight as part of a group touring Southern Africa. The Cavern is situated on 3,000 hectares of picturesque land in Drakensberg and provides great opportunities for walking, horse riding and other sports. Views from the terrace are superb, as are vistas from the walking tracks. Children are well catered for in this family oriented establishment. Accommodation was very comfortable and the food was delicious.

The best part of this property are all the bird songs which are especially glorious in the morning. Make sure you leave a window open at night (preferably the screened door so no unwanted insects fly in).
We really enjoyed our stay at The Cavern. There were lots of activities. The staff is helpful but sometimes you had to press them a little to find out all the things there are to do. We took a hike up to the grotto -- about 20 minutes. The next day we took the Nature Walk hike - about 45 minutes. There are also escorted hikes available. Horseback riding, canoes, trampoline, tennis, lawn bowling, and a practice golf green on site.
It took us a bit to figure out the meal seating -- I guess you are supposed to get the same table for the entire time you are there but there was some confusion in our assignment.
Food was good -- 3 meals included in the price of the room. Drinks are extra. Refrigerator in room is a nice touch -- they'll stock it with what you order. Sleeping room was nice. Beds a little firm for me. Shower had a wonderful water flow and spray. Noise from neighboring room was bothersome -- not much sound insulation.
Pool had a little debris in it but it didn't bother me. Water temp was perfect.
Overall, a wonderful stay.

Room Tip: Try and get an end room to minimize noise from neighbors.

Dear Sequim

Thank you for sharing your experiences of your stay at The Cavern and we are pleased that your time with us was wonderful. Our garden has abundant birdlife and we have been planting more and more indigenous plants, with the assistance of Elsa Pooley, to encourage our feathered friends.

We normally do allocate a table to each family for their stay but occasionally the wheels fall off when someone else changes places.

The majority of our rooms are thatched. Unfortunately thatch is not the most insulated of materials and sound can travel if neighbours are noisy. We do apologise that this was a problem.

We hope we may have the opportunity of welcoming you again.

Best regards,

Megan & Hilton

We stayed for five days and had the most relaxing time. The room was sweet with a little verandah overlooking the tennis courts and fabulous mountain views. It overlooks a water hole where I saw deer and a troop of baboons frolicking in the sun. We walked on well marked paths sometimes on our own and sometimes with a guide. We swam and relaxed next to the pool and saw many families with little children having a lot of fun. There are many activities for the children but surprisingly it does not get in the way if you're past that stage. There is a children's dining area for the little ones and the moms and dads eat afterwards in the main dining room while the children are kept busy in the play area. The food is really good and plentiful. Its really hard to resist if you're trying to diet. But after all a little indulgence is ok on holiday. Highly recommend this resirt which is great value for money.

I visited this hotel as part of a walking group in November 2013. It's a great family oriented resort with considerable personality and charm and it's in a wonderful location, although a little painful to reach. The service was wonderful and I loved the bedroom. The food was good, though the choice not exceptional. The guides of course were excellent. Overall, that terrible journey was definitely worth it!

To be honest, we weren't really sure what to expect with our visit to The Cavern. A lot of the TripAdvisor reviews rave about the options for families with children, which is, of course, great, but which can also often mean noise and tantrums and seemingly deaf parents for the rest of us.

Very happily, the very excellent staff and management at The Cavern handle all their visitor groups well. There's a separate seating area and earlier meal times for young children. And there are plenty of activities for all the guests, including different level hikes depending on one's fitness and energy level.

The scenery is stunning. The food is excellent. The rooms are clean and comfortable. And the spa was one of the nicest we have ever been to.

This is a very special place and one we would be delighted to go back to.

Room Tip: For peace and quiet, ask for one of the rooms in the two blocks near the spa - 77 and 78 are quiet n...

This is an old-school, full-board family hotel with a kids' dining room and playground equipment. It is situated in the Northern Berg, supposedly 3 1/2 hours from JHB if the last stretch of road wasn't so awful. We came 2 years ago when they were working on the road so this year we really hoped the road would finally be complete. Sadly roadworks have been aborted due to lack of government funding and it has been left a stunt biker's dream. The location and ambience of The Cavern is lovely, green and very tranquil with picturesque gentle hiking trails. The food is good and chef's tea is offered at 11am and 4pm. We stayed in a family suite- rooms 27, 28 and 29 which has not been renovated since before I was born. The little concave double bed with the awful hard and lumpy pillows in room 27 is probably the most uncomfortable bed I have ever slept in. Luckily my sore neck and back were fixed by the talented Nobile in the serene Forest Retreat Spa. Definitely one of the prettiest spa settings with the most spectacular view! Will only return to this hotel if I can have a better room, bed and pillow... And several sessions at the Spa!

Dear Family Purchase

Thank you for your kind remarks regarding your stay at The Cavern.

Room 27/28/29 was refurbished in 2008 which included new windows, carpets, cupboards and new furniture. It was repainted 2 weeks ago. Fans and LED lights were installed in May of this year. The mattress you refer to was purchased in 2012 (the date is on the mattress) and it is made to four star standard as per Tourism Grading Council guidelines. We change our mattresses every 4 years. I am just sorry that this was not brought to our or your housekeepers attention immediately as we could have easily changed the mattress and pillows for you.

Perhaps our choice of décor and our refurbishment program is not to your liking but we do have many other guests who specifically request these interleading rooms as they are so well suited to a family holiday.

Maybe one of our superior rooms or suites would be more appealing.

Best regards, Hilton & Megan.
