I am sure The Cavern was there before the Drakensberg were...! ;-) It's certainly been there for a long time; long before many of the other establishments in the area. In spite of the increased competition, the lodge remains the go-to spot for families of all ages from near and far. It has it all! OK, most of it! Great location, comfortable rooms, welcoming reception rooms, wonderful views, good food, numerous activities for adults and children alike. However, for a family with young children, the kids facilities (separate dining room, play areas, pool, attentive child minders) are a deal clincher!
Look out for the specials and book early!! Happy holidays!

I have visited The Cavern on two occasions and thoroughly enjoyed both holidays. Many people there have been coming regularly for years. A family run hotel which is like a home from home with a feeling of being amongst family and friends. Wonderfully friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
Nestled at the upper end of a valley, surrounded by the most incredible mountain scenery. Whether you are a serious hiker or just enjoy a quiet stroll, there is something for everyone. An ideal place to bring toddlers and young children, with superb nannies who will entertain the young ones throughout the day and evening. Lots of sports and activities for all ages.Tranquil spaces and a Spa with beautiful views if you just want a break with peace and quiet. The food was excellent, much care and thought went into the menu, particularly for meat eaters. Being a vegetarian, there was sufficient choice, although I would have liked a few more options.
A huge amount has been done to work with , educate and uplift the local community.A very special and unique place in this age when package tours and commercial chains are the norm!

Room Tip: Most of the rooms have a good view of the mountains. I personally prefer the superior suites which are a little further to walk but are a bit more secluded. The standard rooms are probably better located for convenience if you have little ones.

Wonderful hospitality. Great setting. lots to do for young and old. Could not have asked for anything more.Access a bit tricky over Oliviershoek pass but worth it. Food acceptable. Well priced.Highlights were the varied walks and multiple activities for kids.

I think it is a privilege and a joy to be able to spend time in this wonderful environment. We have been visiting the Cavern for the last 26 years, at least once a year since my children were 6 and 4 years old and can honestly say it is our favourite holiday destination. The scenery on most of the walks is spectacular, the staff are friendly and efficient and the food is well presented and delicious. One is able to relax in beautiful surroundings and over the years we have made many friends, who like us, return on a regular basis. Thank you to the family who run the Cavern for the many happy holidays we have spent with you. We would have no hesitation in recommending the Cavern to any outdoor or nature lover looking for a special family holiday destination.

Room Tip: The superior rooms and suites are very comfortable and all have the most amazing views but the Cavern is not just about the room. There are numerous activities to choose from for young and old. A comfortable private lounge if you want to snuggle up with a book or have a drink next to the fire in winter, a huge games room for the younger folk as well as a more casual lounge for families.
