“Superb views, large chalets”
Reviewed October 31, 2013

It was quite cold and cloudy day when we arrived in Northern Drakensberg area. It was one of the last days of our trip to South Africa and we were on our way from the coast to Johannesburg. Despite the cloud cover we decided to check this area out and so we needed a place for the night. We found Hlalalanathi by chance.
The reception was already closed but the lovely lady at the gate told us that there is a place for us - "unfortunately" there were only chalets for 4 left (there were only 2 of us) but she gave it to us for the price of 2-person-chalet. Well, we did not mind :)
When we arrived to our chalet, we discovered that this was in fact a 2-storey-house with a large living room (that included fireplace, LCD TV, sofas), 2 huge bedrooms, a kitchen (with all the utensils), a toilet, a bathroom (with a full size bath) and a balcony with an amazing view to the valley! It was clearly the best value for money lodging of our whole 3,5-weeks trip. Although it was a bit chilly outside, the house was warm.
The negative side was the fact that everything was closed, even the restaurant. I guess it is expected that the guests use the possibilities of the houses and cook themselves. But that was not a big problem as the security guard told this upon our arrival and in the same time suggested a nice pizza place nearby.
All in all we were really glad we found Hlalalanathi. As I told before the value for money was incredible, surroundings absolutely fabulous (despite the clouds) and I would definitely go there again. But then I would stay longer than one night - the area deserves it.

My Hubby and I spent two very relaxing and enjoyable nights at Hlalanathi - 22nd and 23rd October 2013. The chalet was very clean and comfortable. We stayed in unit 8 which is not the front row view of the Tugela River or Amphitheatre but we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves - no noisy parties or anything as noted by other visitors. Also, Wednesday morning we found that we had NO HOT WATER when we wanted to shower...... what a disaster.... phoned the 24 hour number at 7AM and lo and behold at 7.04AM somebody was at our unit to sort out the problem - NOW THAT IS SERVICE DELUXE.... I would recommend this establishment any day. We will definitely return when in the area. The rate for the unit was most reasonable as well.

We - 5 adults & 2 young children - stayed in the large house at Hlala. Although the house doesn't have the beautiful views that some of the chalets do, it was ideal for our little clan. Large fully equipped kitchen, dining room, living room with DStv + flat screen TV, 3 large bedrooms, two of which are ensuite, private garden and wrap around veranda.
The lodge is well located n the northern Berg with convenient access to great hiking, mountain biking, horse riding and the adventure centre nearby.
Above all this establishment offers down-to-earth value for money with a bunch of facilities if you need them - basic golf course, restaurant, pub, kids playground, nice common garden areas, caravan park, etc. Not sure one needs much more on a family long weekend...?!

Room Tip: Request a unit with view of the river!

We spent a long weekend with friends at Hlalanathi and had a fantastic, relaxed time. We hired a 2 bedroom cottage which came equipped with everything you could want (except washing up liquid!), including a mesmerising view of the Amphitheatre. The cottage was very well kept with a full kitchen, comfortable beds with good linens and a nice Braii area. The servicing every day was excellent, so we always came home to a very clean house. We had cold nights of below freezing, but the wood fire in the lounge-room was very efficient and kept the whole place warm. Plenty of thick blankets and duvets meant that nights were cozy too.

The resort is in need of a little upkeep in the public areas (i.e. tennis courts and play ground) but all the facilities are usable if not top notch. The golf course is well kept and very relaxed with lots of families playing when we were there. Lots of open spaces for kids to play and run around in, and although we did not have young children with us, we were never overly bothered by children being too noisy or playing to closely to our cottage. It is true that a village is across the valley from the resort and we did hear some music on the friday night, but not enough to be annoying.

Although we self-catered for the weekend, as I think most people do, we ate one lunch at the onsite restaurant, which serves reasonable food at a very reasonable price. I personally think self catering is the way to go here, but its nice to have the option to eat out if you want to.

The resort is extremely well located to the Royal Natal National Park, being only 5 minutes drive away. Lots of walking, fishing, picnicking and some great rock art paintings too. Overall a great place to stay for a chilled weekend.

Room Tip: Ask for a cottage with a view of the Amphitheatre.

My husband and our two teenage boys stayed for a week in a 6 sleeper (2 bedroom) chalet. I loved it, the boys got a little bored as it was too cold to swim and it was too quiet for them until the weekend when other guests started to arrive. We had a wonderful stay in a clean, well cared for resort. Everyone was friendly, from the ground staff to the owner. The food at the restaurant was tasty and waiters were pleasant and efficient. We were looked after very well and have no complaints. We will definitely be back!

On its website Hlalanathi Drakensberg Resort claims to be a retreat “that can revitalise ones [sic] soul and make you feel truly alive”, boasting of “fantastic relaxing facilities” including gardens that “entice folk to laze and relax” and a golf course where non-golfers may “walk around the manicured course to enjoy the peace of the rolling terrain, the water features and bird life”.

Sounds too good to be true? Well, depending on your truth, the answer is a resounding “yes and/or no.”

For instance, it is true that walking around without golf clubs is much more relaxing than playing hide-and-go-seek with golf balls. It may also be true that non-golfers enjoy the water features and bird life more than golfers – ignoring golfers’ obsession with birdies, eagles and albatrosses.

The Hlala website describes their 19th hole as “a festive pub”. Unfortunately this is also true. On Friday night their music kept me up till after 12 and on Saturday night till just before 1.

First I complained at the pub, and discovered the manager moonlighting as DJ. Then I complained at the Hlala office and was told essentially (1) that they cater both for those who stay at their fantastic relaxing facilities and for others – who don’t necessarily stay there – but want a festive pub and (2) that if I complained to the police they wouldn’t come out before midnight anyway, at which time the pub is supposed to shut on Fridays and Saturdays (unless it is too festive).

Perhaps “relaxing” and “festive” are incompatible only to the sick soul seeking revitalisation, but not in the truth inhabited by sleepy policemen and the Hlala people. So, everything on the Hlala website is “true” – just not at the same time. And that’s not good.

Very comfortable accommodation, always spotless. This is the 3rd time we have stayed here. This time we stayed in the 'Garden Cottage' - a private thatched bungalow set in the garden with it's own private braai area outside. Absolutely delightful, and very quiet. Previously we have used the caravan park, and our friends stayed there this time. Breath taking views from the park and the ablutions were spotless. It's a lovely place to meet friends and there are lots of things to do too. We were not very taken by the restaurant - we had breakfast on the one day. Terrible coffee and poor service. Other than that, I would highly recommend it.

Room Tip: The Garden Cottage is delightful - but has no view of the mountain. However it has a lovely private...
