“The lost valley of natural bliss”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 23, 2013

We spent two nights on our way back from Maseru to Johannesburg, we had the family room 15. Thescenery is incredible, a valley surrounded by mountains (one is shaped like a pyramid) and plateaus, The lodge is magnificent, accommodation is divided in separate buildings grouping certain types of rooms and suites. The owners breed horses so this is a fantastic place for nature lovers, horse-riders, trekkers, families, 4X4 drivers, game watchers, fishermen, and this should not leave many people out.
We arrived in the afternoon so we went for a walk through a signalled path, and came back by the beautiful sunset. We never felt unsafe, the animals (all peaceful) kept their distance, and here, distance has a meaning. One can walk for days without passing by the same place. The food that night was exceptional. The fieplace was crackling when we returned to the room after dinner (it was winter and winter is cold here). Day two we went for a two hours guided horse ride, during which one can see the stunning scenery and the animals from much closer. This is definitely the way to go around Moolmans Hoek. The excellent picnic bag was packed on time by the incredibly friendly staff and we went off for a walk in the afternoon just a mile away on a slope. Probably the best possible nap in the open ever. One can climb up to the plateaus nearby and enjoy the great view. Dinner that night was as fantastic as the previous. We left the day after with a promise we'll be back. All in all we spent what another place would have charged for one night, and this was all included (food and horse ride also!).
The staff is so friendly and motivated, the place is so gorgeous, there's no way one can be disappointed here. One of our all-time favourite places on the planet.

This place is fantastic. Breathtaking landscapes, amazing horse rides, excellent food, very cosy accommodation. We were greatly greeted despite our 2 young (and noisy) kids. Short walks with sights of birds and all type of bocks.

Well, I visited Moolmanshoek back in December 2011. Sadly I only stayed there for 1 night with friends and family. I can safely say its my favourite place on earth. I'm Irish and love the countryside. We're lucky in Ireland that though our weather is bad our scenery is amazing, but Moolmanshoek had it all, the scenery, the animals, the beautiful accommodation (we stayed in the executive rooms), and the fab weather. The staff are welcoming, the food is gorgeous while dining is relaxed and buffet style. One of our group was an extremely fussy eater and as we informed the manager during our booking they couldn't have been anymore accommodating. Truthfully, my only negative of this trip was that I didn't book in for longer. Personally I love being out in nature and we were lucky to see horses running around in the fields behind our accommodation which was breathtaking. I booked Moolmanshoek in order to see the Meerkats, and sadly because we had to make an early start the following morning our time with the Meerkats was limited, but that just means I will have revisit Moolmanshoek in order to visit the Meerkats properly.

Room Tip: Pick the executive room. For the sake a few extra euro (Rand) its well worth it!!!!!

This place simply rocks. Its nestled in a magnificent valley that the family (who own and run it) changed from farmland to a nature reserve. The buildings are built of hand cut sand stone. Our room was in the "stable block" it had a wood burning fireplace and a stunning bathroom with free standing bath and big shower. Because its an old building the walls were crazy thick which made it really warm (it was very cold outside) and sound proof.

They use half their property to farm horses and they use some of them for horse-trails. I too run a horse-trail business and I know the work it takes in caring for and training trail horses. We have a herd of 25. They have 350!! Wiseman, the horseman, treats the horses just like horses naturally like to be treated. Happy well trained horses make for awesome rides. There are horses suitable for all levels and I would highly recommend exploring the nature reserve on horse back.

Another wonderful aspect to this lodge is the Meerkat Program. Sheldon takes guests to visit a colony of wild meerkats with whom he has become "friends". They are completely wild and do not depend on humans at all, but they have become accustomed to him and the guests he brings and so allow humans to come very close, within 1 metre, to them. They come out their burrows in their own time so guests need to be patient.

The family is involved in every aspect of the lodge and it shows.

Seriously. You have got to go to Moolmanshoek.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Moolmanshoek is situated in the Witteberg mountain range, between Ficksburg and Rosendal, Eastern Free State, South Africa. Do you long to escape for a while from the city noise and stress? Are you seeking rest for your soul, a peaceful environment, or that ideal setting for your wedding, for team building or a conference? The reserve was declared a Natural Heritage Site (No 199) in 1994, mainly because of the rare Mountain Bamboo that grows in the valley. Come and share this piece of Paradise with us for a few days. Take a leisurely stroll across the valley floor, go on a relaxing game drive or explore the reserve on horseback or by horse cart. Our SA Boerperd and Endurance Arab horses are born and bred in the valley, where more than 300 horses make Moolmanshoek their home. It is our hope that the uniqueness and splendour of our surroundings will be as inspiring to you as it has always been to us. We believe that Moolmanshoek is:A feast for the eyes, rest for your soul and firewood for the times ahead! It is our privilege to be stewards of more than 3 300 hectares of the breathtaking Moolmanshoek valley. The Witteberg Mountains surround the valley in the shape of a horseshoe (with Visierskerf peaking at 2407m above sea level) feeding several mountain streams in the valley floor below. This basin is home to a variety of game that include Springbuck, Black Wildebeest, Blesbuck, Zebra, Eland, Gemsbok and many others that are historically indigenous to the area. More than 230 bird species can be seen in the reserve, while a wide variety of plants grow on the mountain slopes and in the beautiful wooded ravines.Under the skilled hands and vision of the owner, Willie Nel, the once productive farm was transformed and developed into a game reserve and conservation area. It was later declared a private nature reserve. You are invited to visit us and revel in the breathtaking natural beauty and tranquillity; the rich variety of wildlife, flora and birdlife in an unspoiled mountain environment. Explore the reserve on horseback, go walking alongside streams and dams, or enjoy fly-fishing in clear spring water. Follow one of our three hiking trails or various day walks and renew your mind and soul. Challenge yourself with abseiling, a 4X4 drive or climbing one of the peaks. ... more   less
