“Great Island Getaway”
Reviewed April 24, 2014

As a Christmas Vacation destination to relax it was fantastic. Short flight to the Island in an old propeller plane and 'tractored' to the hotel from the airstrip - felt exotic! Chalets are first class, comfortable and right by the water, though when the tide goes out you're left wit a large expanse of muddy beach. When the tide is in it's a safe place for kids on provided paddle boats though. Meals were good, with a warm pool nearby so you could just relax all day. Visited the old lighthouse on the Island, scuba diving was a little rough and murky. You have to enjoy the heat though and felt it overpriced. Overall its a great place to unwind and do little, in comfort.

The flight to the island is an experience in its own right, set right on the beach but be aware the water is so shallow at the hotel you cannot swim. The hotel will drive you to dolphins bay which is an absolutely beautiful beach nearby and I would recommend a visit. The hotel will fill up a cooler full of drinks and you can just relax. There were six of us and the hotel only had about 14 guests when we stayed, so unless you like your own company I would not go as a couple as there is not a lot to do. The food was unfortunately always luke warm except when they did a la carte which they did often as it made more sense with only a few guests. The bar staff were very friendly and the drinks flowed as much as you wanted. One word of advice our flight back was at 12:45 with the connection at 13:25. This is not enough, if it was not for the other members of our party arguing with the pilot at the connection he would have taken off without us. You will be approached by locals trying to sell you stuff, they cannot come up to the bedrooms unless you invite them so do not. If I were to improve anything it would be the buffet food especially dessert and breakfast.

Room Tip: Some rooms are a long walk in the dark, ask for one closer to the main building

We have been going to Bazaruto Lodge since 1996. And the experience just keeps getting better. From snorkelling to deep sea fishing. Good quality family time underneath the Bungalow Umbrellas - to sun downers at the bar. I would recommend this resort to anyone who like's to get out of the city to where there is no cars and malls and people. Just relaxing in nature. What a privilege.

Room Tip: Older bungalows closest to the water are very comfortable as it is only a short distance to all ente...

I had spend most of my December Holiday at Pestana Bazaruto Lodge and must shamefully admit it was the most deceiving four star Hotel I have been to.
The overall service is basically the standard of a two star rated hotel. The food leaves nothing for the imagination and is the same food everyday.
The overall neatness of the resort shows a lack of basic management and gardens are left to grow at own will.
Furniture shows the age and wear and tear of time.
Definitely not a four star Hotel, rather an average three star in my opinion. With all the options of island style breakaways, this hotel can count its days. The standard of the hotel does not deserve the unbelievable setting it is in. What a pity.

Room Tip: Insists on new sheets on the bed as this was old.

What an absolute privilege to have spent 6 amazing days at the Lodge. First day the rain bucketed down restricting us to the hotel but as the weather cleared we were able to enjoy the serenity of the beautiful island. Tony and his staff were first class, friendly, attentive and efficient. A trip and beach braai/BBQ on Paradise Island is a must. Meals of the daily fish catch or squid/calamari was excellent. Even the short plane trip is an adventure and the breathless views of the sea. Each day ended at the beach bar enjoying sundowners and a breathtaking view.

My wife and I had the privelidge to spend a weekend in March 2013. We enjoyed it thoroughly and it was even better than we hoped for. Sure there was a blocked drain in the outside shower but for the rest...very good.

A quiet, unspoilt island on which you can totally relax. Most of the time the only sounds are of birdsong as there are no roads and only a couple of light aircraft flights arriving/departing per day.

Luckily when we visited in October the temperature was perfect at around 25C so almost our entire time on Bazaruto was spent in the fresh air. We snorkeled, walked the deserted sandy beaches, climbed the dunes to the lighthouse, went whale watching, scuba diving or just lazed on a beach lounger or on our patio chairs with a book.

The Marine Megfauna Foundation were setting up a new research centre at the hotel as we arrived. The two marine scientists, Cat & Kate, were friendly and enthusiastic. One or other of them accompanied all snorkeling/diving/whale watching trips and they were happy to answer questions and tell us about what they are studying in the area. There are whale sharks, manta rays, dugongs, dolphins and turtles to be seen locally and for some months of the year humpack whales too. We were lucky enough to see the humpacks from the shore, breaching out at sea and then to get close to a male, female and calf while on the whale watching trip. Well done Bazaruto Lodge for developing this link to a conservation team. These knowlegeable young women were a highlight of our trip and if you are visiting between now and March 2014, buy the girls a drink at the bar as they are funding the research themselves and do not get paid!

The tide does recede a long way each day but if it is not possible to take out the boats you can always hitch a free ride on the tractor/trailer each morning and be driven round to the east coast for snorkeling on the reef or sunbathing/walking on the deserted golden beach. A handy EZ up shade is always set up for you and you can ask for water/drinks to be taken in the coolbox as well. Just tell the driver when you want to be collected.

As for the hotel itself, admittedly it is not luxurious but it IS attractive and comfortable. Housekeeping staff did a good job but can I suggest the addition of a water pot & local style broom on each patio (clay pot with a coconut shell would be a "green" option- as seen at Zazen in Koh Samui-see photo) to wash feet before trailing sand everywhere.
Thanks to the insect screen and mosquito net we were able to leave the door open and fall asleep to the sound of the lapping sea. We both slept well but if you do wake in the wee small hours go out and lie on the beach to look at the stars, they are an amazing sight if you are used to living where there are streetlights.

The dining area and bar are open sided and have uninterrrupted sea views. The sunsets each evening were beautiful and we viewed them mainly from the bar while sipping one of our "all inclusive" drinks. All inclusive is definitely a good plan as there is nowhere else to eat and drink other than the lodge. My only gripe was the wine included in the plan was pretty iffy (& I drink most wines) but if you are happy to stick on spirits, beer or cocktails there is lots of choice. The bar is a good place to meet other guests as everyone gathers there before dinner each evening and the next day's activities are arranged depending on when the high tide is due.

The food selection is not as extensive as you would get in big hotels but one has to remember that this is an island and almost every item is brought in by boat from the mainland. Everything on offer was tasty and fresh. I love fish and seafood, which were regularly on the menu thanks to the fishing trips and the barbecue night on Saturday was great, complete with traditional dancing by people from the nearby village. Breakfast and dinner were buffet style and lunch had buffet salads and desserts with a menu for main courses. The playing of traditional drums heralds lunch and dinner. The waiting staff were lovely, friendly and always attentive. We liked the special table setting on our final evening - a nice touch.

I had both a facial and massage at the lovely spa, which is located right on the beach. Prices were very reasonable. My thanks to Annie whose expert administrations made both appointments such a treat.

The hotel has an initiative to help the local villagers by providing employment and also supporting the local school and building of a clinic, so if you can take items to donate -please do, or else donate some cash for this good cause.Special thanks to Manacas, one of the barmen, who, on his morning off, took me to visit the local school and was such a good guide. Our thanks also to Manager Louis and Activites manager Louis for such a warm welcome.

Finally- the flights to and from Vilanculos - what a delight. Without doubt the shallow channel between Bazaruto and Vilanculos holds the most beautiful seascape I have ever seen.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 37, which is a good way from reception/restaurant/bar/pool/lounge. I did not mind...
