“Almost got there!”
Reviewed March 18, 2013

Walked up to the foot of Toubkal in February 2013. Very hot and sunny, we took down jackets and lots of kit but only needed at night. Having said that people we spoke to had been in snow 1 week earlier. Fantastic walking, keep within your comfort zone probably great in the summer months but caution needed in winter months.

“A fantastic experience”
Reviewed February 23, 2013

I went up Toubkal in February with my two boys 17 and 24. I am 60 and not particularly fit. We drove up from Marrakesh to Imlil at 1700m where we met our team - our guide Ibrahim, Our cook Samir, and the mule and his owner. We loaded the bags on the mule, and walked up from Imlil to the refuge at 3200 m, a six hour trek. we stayed at the refuge of the night. It was comfortable but freezing - I think we had warm sleeping bags but kept on all three layers of clothing. The next day we did the big climb - the boys went up to the top of Toubkal in the snow and ice, a five hour trek. I was advised to do a slightly less strenuous climb to a col at 3800m. I found the thin air and steep climb hard to cope with, but Samir kept me going continuously invoking in Inshallah. The next day we walked down to Imlil. The three day trip cost around €200 per person, including all food and lodging. This trip is not for the fainthearted. But the combination off the mountaineering, the scenery and the companionship of the Berber team made it an experience I shall never forget.

“Toubkal experience”
Reviewed February 15, 2013

What a wonderful adventure. Dar Tighoula in Imlil was an amazing place to stay. If you have some hiking experience and ask for the basic info you shouldn't need a guide, we didn't. First day took 4ish hours to the Neltner hut- with packs. Second day was approx 4hours to the summit, 3 hours down and 4hours back to Imlil. We camped for free just below the Moroccan hut and used it for their fire room and I had an expensive dinner there for ease- though everyone had different prices they were paying for accomodation and food, I guess depending on your ability to barter.
There was mixed advice as to whether or not to take crampons; my friend did the whole thing without and I used them on the way down only, finding them very handy.

So glad I did this climb, an amazing life experience, although not to be taken completely light-hearted unless you are accomplished with mountain hiking.

“Budget tourism at Toubkal”
Reviewed October 6, 2012

In July 2012 we visited the Toubkal national park. Friends recommended the Kasbah du Toubkal as a nice place to stay, but we decided that it was a little bit too expensive. So if you take the same point of view, what are your options? We decided to drive up to the village of Imlil at just see what we could find. What we found was that, appart from the Kasbah which is kind of another world, Imlil was not a nice place. However, there is a very narrow mountain road leading to a small village 2 kilometers higher up. it is a much nicer place for budget tourists. But it is not easy to find the road, and you should not be afraid of mountain driving. The best thing to do is to contact the mountain guide center along the main road in Imlil and ask. They will probably want to give you a mountain guide too, which is not a bad idea. We rented a single and a double for one night for 200 Dirham all together at a place called Omar's. Absolutely no luxury, but with bathroom and breakfast. And we paid 300 Dirham for the guide. In addition we could by berber crafts for much less than in Marrakesh.
