“It must have been our unlucky day....will give them a very good for the value.”
Reviewed April 7, 2014

The hotel is fairly priced and a convenient walk to the beach. There is a small grocery store less than a kilometer away as well as a number of restaurants, some better than others.

Our first night at the hotel was one mishap after another, including a much longer than advertised shuttle ride from the hotel, the restaurant manager being very, very rude to us, our bill being incorrect and having to be fixed, the bell-hop service taking us to TWO rooms that were occupied before actually taking us to our room.... All of this in the first hour of arriving.

Management was attentive the following day, working to fix what I will call glitches.

We didn't eat breakfast every day, though it was included in the price. The make fresh omelets and crepes - which is a lovely way to start the morning. We chose not to eat at the restaurant in the evening, as we had some fussy eaters in our group and the buffet didn't seem to offer many simple foods.

We didn't use the spa - so cannot comment.

The rooms were clean and cleaned every day. The only thing that was problematic with the rooms is that in the family room, the air conditioner is in one of the rooms, the second room door needed to be open in order to feel the air con.

I have stay for 5n in hotel. If you are vegetarian then hotel has very less to offer. Breakfast is fixed continental and in dinner no much options.
But if you are not then you will like. Other than food hotel is very decent , rooms are big, pool is a cool place to chill there.
Overall a value for money hotel.

The hotel was great, spotlessly clean, courteous staff, varied food, gentle entertainment. A short walk from a great beach & a pool outside our room. Any problems were quickly attended to. We will go again.

We stayed under the all inclusive package. it's value for money.. the restaurant serve delicious mauritian food either buffet or 'a la carte'.. variety of food and desserts.. the drinks at the bar was fresh, great and well presented.. large variety of local drinks.. congratulation to the restaurant and bar manager, you have good managerial skill.. and what hit me the most is that you don't remain to your strategic level but you also roll up your shirt to help the staff.. he is always here to help us if any problem arises within the restaurant and bar.. all staffs are very helpful, the barmans, waiters or waitress, the receptionist Varsha is very friendly.. we enjoyed the indoor games, especially the billard.. the hotel has 3 pools which are quite clean in the morning only..

Room Tip: Ask for ground floor room and closer to the reception..

We stayed at the Le Palmiste hotel from the 26th of October to 4 November. My experience was as follows:

Client service: The client service was good. The staff are friendly, attentive and quite professional. You can approach then with questions and special requests and they will assist where possible. Most of the staff speaks good English but here and there you will have to settle for broken English. It seems as if the staff is more fluent in French.

Room: The room was bigger than the usual 3 star accommodation I have seen before. There is a small separate kitchenette. In the Kitchenette you will find the minibar (stocked with 2 beers, 1 litre water and 2 cold drinks – you drink, you pay), Kettle and some mugs and spoons. No coffee, tea, milk, sugar etc. are provided – bring with or buy.
The bathroom was nice and spacious. The bathroom only had a shower – no bath – but that is not a problem. Only body lotion and small bar of soap were provided. In the shower you will find a liquid soap dispenser. I don’t think it is suitable to wash your hair with.
The room has a small flat screen TV with very limited channels. All channels were in French, except BCC that had some English now and again. StarGold, at least for those that can’t understand French, had sub titles in English. At least one English movie channel would be extremely nice.
Every room has its own balcony with 2 chairs and a table – quite nice I thought. There is, also, a safe in the cupboard. The bed was very, very firm – a bit to firm for my liking. The rooms are cleaned everyday but you do not get fresh linen every day. If you need a hair dryer then you must ask at reception. Beach towels are also available at reception.

Smoking: Smoking is allowed in some rooms, the bar and at the pool. Ashtrays are available in the smoking rooms.

Lift (elevator): There are no lifts in the hotel – only steps.

Hotel premises: The hotel looks exactly as it does on the website or review sites. It has 3 nice sized pools that are cleaned every single morning. There are a lot of palm trees and greenery – it really looks ‘Tropical Island’. They have a ‘disco’ Friday and Saturday night but it opens at 9:00 and close at 11:00. We did not make use of the spa so I cannot comment on it.

Food & prices: The food was average. The spread was somewhat limited. They had theme evening e.g Italian, Mauritian or Grill. You can expect to pay Rs90 for a beer and Rs200 – 250 for a cocktail and Rs75 for water. I found the Vanilla rum to be very nice, try it.

Beach and surroundings: The beach is really 4 max 5 minutes’ walk away. You cross a street that is really not very busy. To your right (about 100m from the hotel) you will find a small tour operator. We used them to go to Ilse aux Cerf (Rs1000 per person – the same price as you will get in Grand bay)– it was very nice!
At the traffic light, to the left, you will find a ‘bureau de change’ (actually only tellers) where you can withdraw money and use you ‘cash passport’.
To your left (about 100m) you will find a ‘super market’ named Chez Popo. It is a nice place to buy beer (Rs30), water (Rs38), bread, chips…anything.
The beach at the hotel is very nice but expect to swim between the boats or (even worst) in the small swimming area between the yellow floats. I still can’t understand, for the life of me, why they planted pine trees at some of the beaches – really that was such a mood killer.

General: If you want to buy gifts go to Super U in Grand bay. It is save to use the buses although they did try to over change us once. A bus trip for 2 people to Super U cost Rs54 from the stone bus stop on the other side of the traffic light.

Room Tip: The rooms on the 1st floor (not on the ground) is nice because you have privacy on your balcony and...

From the moment we arrived and saw so many friendly faces from last year, we knew we had done the right thing in returning. For the whole of our 2 week stay we were made to feel like VIP's from all of the staff. Including top man Sashti, Suren, Vanessa, Babita, Valisha , DJ Vijay (meow, meow) and Sarvesh. Also great to see Maya again, our chambermaid from last year, and not forgetting the Chef who was on top form with delicious meals everyday. The grounds were kept exceptional as always and we hope to return again next year, fingers crossed!
