“Casuarina Review - Pros and Cons”
Reviewed March 8, 2013

We stayed in Casuarina hotel in the first week of December. Below are the pros and cons -

Pros -

Spacious Room - The rooms are designed like cottages, with king size bed, nice and clean bathrooms and spacious balcony and the room is cleaned once every day.
Friendly Staff - The staff is pretty friendly and helpful.
Nice Pool and Spa - There are two pools and both are pretty good. Spa is excellent.
Good Variety of Food - Food available is sea food, continental and indian. My wife is a vegetarian and she had good options available. I specially liked the fish that was prepared there and every day had a different variety of fish prepared. Beakfast was complimentary and nutritious.

Cons -
The beach is cross the road, so it depends on your choice. we didn't get sea facing room. In fact there are not many rooms there that are sea facing.
Complimentary wine was not good.
Room Service was pretty expensive and there were not many options available anyway in the menu.

We definitely had a very good stay and have fond memories of the place and Mauritius in whole. Would definitely like to go back to Mauritius as it was whole lot of fun roaming around the island and doing various sea activities like parasailing, under water sea walk etc. Perfect place for a vacation.

Positives : v. Good bar staff, rooms good and cleaned daily. Two pools with warmish water very clean. Food good on the whole.
Great deal of rehashed stuff, pick carefully, choose the fresh cooked meats and fish. Salads contain re presented meat and fish. STEVE ( one of the catering area supervisors), absolutely on the ball. Keeps things moving and very helpful to table location, which can be a contentious issue with other dining staff, especially one or two of the more arrogant waiters. Majority were fine, but we found them lacking in being polite or showing good manners around the dining experience.
We arrived in time for evening meal, where men have to wear FULL length trousers..... No exemptions! I only had one pair, which I used to travel in and had to wear them all week. This was not mentioned in the Mercury Direct brochure, nor was the fact that all inclusive does not mean what it says and it depends what arrangement your tour operator has with the hotel, CHECK THIS OUT before going. We found that there is also an all inclusive PRIVILEGE. You have to pay for the mini bar contents and tea or coffee in your room on just all inclusive. Bit of a 'con' really and you should get a list of your entitlements, we didn't and it caused a bit of hassle to establish this.
The beach over the road is not the best, in terms of crossing a formula 1 speed track, on a bend, only to find 'hawkers' selling DODOS, jewellery etc. all day long and various trips in competition with your travel rep.
We will not return, mainly, the whole thing is surrounded by hassle and if we had not met up with two super couples to share our experiences with, the holiday would have been poor. I have only told it as it is, I am afraid, but do check what you are getting from your tour operator, BEFORE you go. John, Thirsk.

Room Tip: Book or upgrade to a sea view room, whereupon you get wifi free, access to mini bar free, free tea...

We thank you for your review and would like to comment on the following:-

In general, your package is subject to a mutual agreement between the hotel and the Tour Operator and being based on a defined budget. The beneficiary (guest) must be advised of the contents of his package so as to avoid any misinformation.

Upon check-in at the hotel, you are remitted a document (in accordance with our Tour Operator) mentioning clearly to which package you are entitled (beverages list, opening and closing hours and other useful information).

All throughout your stay, your table had been set as per your requirements (first 2 persons, then 4 persons and finally a table for 6). All our F&B team (supervisors, head waiters and waiters) at the Boucanier and Tree Top Restaurants provide the best possible service to all our hotel guests as per the Mauritian hospitality.

As per our contractual agreement with all our Tour Operators, the dress code for men is long trousers compulsory at dinner time.

We have invested a huge amount of money on the Casuarina Resort & Spa beach which has been reprofiled recently further to an EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment). Our guests can relax, as from 08h00, under the 21 straw-huts on one of the most beautiful beaches of the North of the island, Trou-aux-Biches.

The pedestrian crossing which guests use to access the beach is a very secure one and up to international standards; we have not encountered any problem to date and children even use the crossing safely to go to the beach.

I met you personally at the swimming pool. We exchanged a few words and you seemed fully satisfied, as well as your wife of your stay at the Casuarina Resort & Spa.

Only negative point is that we were not offered anything to drink upon arrival. We had been travelling for 24 hours, including over an hour transfer and were very thirsty. Thankfully things improved from there.

The room we were allocated was in a nice position with a spacious balcony, queen size bed and terrific shower. It was on the first floor but this wasn't a problem as the hotel had a porterage service. Room was very clean and bed linen and towels changed on a daily basis.

The food in the restaurant was plentiful with something to suit all tastes. The chef's would even cook you something if there was nothing to your taste. Breakfast was particularly good with an egg statiion and a pancake station.

The bar had very good service, particularly Patrice who made sure you never had an empty glass. All the waiting on staff were very friendly and helpful as were the reception and maintenance staff. We had a power failure in the room, this was sorted within ten minutes.

All in all I we would thoroughly recommend this hotel.

We thank you for your review and would like to comment on the following:-

It can happen, during summer, to see some small Geckos in our rooms (not lizards). These small insects form part of the tropical fauna and are extremely harmless!

Our “Information Kiosk” is open from 08:00 to 18:00 every day for the free bath towel service. During period of very high occupancy, the stock of towels has to be renewed regularly.

We stayed at the Casuarina with friends from 15 November 2011 for two weeks. We booked our holiday with Mercury Direct including a 12 hour direct flight from Heathrow with Air Mauritius. The holiday was very relaxing, room comfortable with air con and tv (limited english channels). The gardens and room settings are delightful and the 2 swimming pools very pleasant and clean. The main thing that makes the hotel such a lovely place to stay is the excellent staff who cannot do enough for you particularly in the bar area and restaurant. The food in the restaurant is good although it can be a bit repetitive, however you can ask the staff for something different to be cooked for you. If going on trips try Vijay on the beach opposite the hotel, his prices are very keen compared to the main tour operators.

Room Tip: Advise that frogs near the pond can be very noisy

This is an average hotel, not so great.

Pros:

Cheap
Clean
Beach Facing

Cons:
Bad food
lot of hidden costs
Not so great staff

Hotel does not even provide even water bottles in the room. Also, even for the bath towels you need to deposit a hefty amount.

Room Tip: Better choose a good hotel if the money is not a constraint

If you wish, you can also taste the dishes from our European buffet.

Our hotel staff does its utmost so that all our guests have a most enjoyable stay. However, our guests are requested to stick to the package they have booked for. This is clearly mentioned at the time of check-in.

Stayed on an all-inclusive basis for 10 nights at this hotel. The grounds are tropical gardens and well kept. It has a smaller and more freindly atmosphere than some of the massive 5 star resorts in Mauritius. If you want marble staircases, chandeliers, grand receptions, organised pool activities and kids clubs.....this is not the place for you. If you want a chilled out quiet atmosphere, low ley entertainment and friendly staff, this may suit you. The food in the buffet restaurant was good. Not all guests are all-inclusive so the food is of a standard that others would be happy to pay for. There is an Indian sway on the evening meals but each night has a slightly different theme. Curry lovers well catered for but there was always alternatives for those who wanted something else. BBQ meat, Pasta, Salads, fruits, breads, soups, vegetable dishes all appeared regularly. Lovely salad selections at lunchtime. The bar was small and had tables around the bar and pool areas. Staff will wait on you for your drinks but often needed a little prompting when your glass was dry. Not a complaint though as you do not really expect to be waited on at an all inclusive resort. Evenings are spent in the restaurant and the bar. Some light entertainment in the form of live music most nights, but nice and low key and background music. Only one bar and restaurant so variety is limited for evenings, but we ventured out to Grand Baie on a couple of evenings for a bit of variety. Easy to get to on the local bus and a taxi back that costs about 400 rupees. Grand Baie has some nice restaurants and an atmosphere on a saturday night when the locals are out, but quite quiet mid-week. Shops there are good but shut at 1730. The bar in the hotel shuts at 2300 as does most of the night-life in Mauritius. So if you are wanting a drink in the hotel after 2300 it can only be bought from your mini-bar in your room.
The beach associated with the hotel is across a small road, not a problem for us as only a few metres away. We travelled around the island in a car for 2 days and I have to say that this beach was one of the best. There are watersports activities put on free for the guests. Snokelling boat trips, pedaloes, dinghy sailing, water-skiing. The sunbeds were comfortable and free for guests, but not that many of them so the age-old trick of getting up early and towel-placing on the beds very much in effect here. The sand is soft and comfortable though so no major incident if you do not get a sunbed. No hassle from people on the beach. In fact, no hassle at all outside of the hotels. You can walk, catch buses, go into towns etc and nobody will hassle you and the feeling we had was that of being safe and untroubled. A welcome change from many tropical places.
All in all, we would love to return to Mauritius. The beaches, sea and island was pretty and easy to get around. If we were to return we would be more than happy to stay at the Casuarina resort again. We thought it posed good value for money and catered to our taste perfectly. Our room was spacious and well airconditioned and had a lovely balcony view over the tropical pond in the gardens. The tropical plants, palm trees and croaking frogs only added to the tropical feel of the island and the hotel. A lovely holiday, no complaints and would return there in the future.
