Casuarina Resort & Spa
Ranked #5 of 10 Hotels in Trou aux Biches
Reviewed December 12, 2012

Casuarina Hotel is a beautiful hotel and spread over large area with small villas with garden front. The place is well maintained and the gardens and lawns are well looked after. The rooms are nice and suitably furnished. The food spread is good with a fine balance with Continental and Indian cuisine. The place is popular with Indians on account of Indian food. I found the staff very polite and helpful. On the flipside, wi-fi is not free and it is chargeable. The hotel should make wi-fi free to its guests.

The hotel is not on the beach. The beach is across the Coastal Road. Guests needs to little careful while crossing the road. On the beach, the hotel provides for sundeck chairs as well as ocean cruise in glass bottom boats (it was great). The adventurous ones can go for water skiing etc. (we didn't).

Overall we had a very good hoilday at Casuariuna!

Room Tip: Try to get a room on the first floor overlooking the ocean. Most of the rooms do not have ocean view...

We booked for our Honeymoon and was happy choosing this hotel. It has three restaurants.. but if you booked the hotel as FB/HB, you will dine mostly in one restaurant, other is Bar and restaurant and finally a tree top restaurant(chargable). Good pools and beach view. provided some water activities. Good access to other areas by buses.
Rooms were well maintained and cleaned.

We stayed at the hotel for a week in Nov 2012. We had a AI package - food was great (mainly Indian cuisine, a bit of of European), staff was friendly and helpful. When we were at the hotel there were about 10-20 guests, so very quiet. Great offer of drinks, access to Wifi in lobby, evening entertainment was ok - daily something new. Clean swimming pools, no problem with finding a place. On the beach the same - great offer of boat house! Water ski, kayak, paddle boat, glass bottom boat. Free mini bar in the room.
The only - : beach was not very clean - a lot of staff but no one cleaned up. I would reccomend to the hotel also add some snacks to the package - only pancakes available in the afternoon.
However holiday was perfect, clean room, beach towels, staff very friendly and they even organized little birthday party for me :)
When you are in Mauritius you must stay at Casuarina!

Room Tip: You can mail hotel before arrival - contact is great and easy :)

OK here goes, my first ever report on a holiday. My wife and me went on a holiday to Mauritius in late October 2012 for our 40th. Wedding Anniversary. Mauritius is a long way off from Glasgow so we had some misgivings about the journey, our recent trips being 3 – 4 hours with Ryanair. We booked through Mercury Direct for the first time and will definitely use them again. They used Emirates to fly us there which was first class and was to Ryanair as a Rolls Royce is to a mini, four flights bang on time, wide seats, good legroom, meals and drinks included, seats and boarding passes all booked in advance and 30 Kg allowance each. We had forgotten what it was like to travel properly.
We booked into the Hotel Casuarina around 6pm after a 1 hour taxi ride ( included in the price) and were greeted by our receptionist with a drink and the easiest admin. I can remember. We soon discovered that nothing was a problem to the hotel staff which seemed to number more than the guests at times and every action was accompanied by genuine smiles and interest in us and our own country.
The hotel is rated three star plus and we were mystified as to why it wasn’t higher. It seems impossible to get better food, drinks, nightly entertainment and daytime activities, especially the facilities at the beach and all with an excellent no problems service .The hotel also has a resident maintenance staff and a curtain pulled off the rail by me or a stair lamp out, mended before you were back in the room. Even fallen leaves on the paths removed before breakfast and two pools presented in tip top condition every day before even the earliest of risers.
We enjoyed the company of some lovely people from Italy, India, Germany, France, UK and South Africa and gathered from them that they were also enjoying the resort and Mauritius in general and all seemed to have a good word for the staff as well. It may have been by design but we tended to see the same waiters, bar staff, receptionists and chefs most days although we were aware of others who, I am sure, were just as good. I made a particular note of ours though and would like to mention them here. Our Room Maid, Reshma, who left our room spotless very day and decorated the place with so many flowers. Receptionist Lelly-Jane and her Supervisor Sonia who could not have helped more with directions, timetables, trip ideas, wi-fi and lots of information about the Island. Rishi, our Head Waiter, who introduced us to some culinary delights we might not have tried ourselves and who never let our glasses get empty and Steeve, the Restaurant Supervisor who ran a tight ship but with a laugh and a joke rather than a scowl and who never failed to greet his patrons personally for every meal.
We really enjoyed Mauritius and if we can make it back we hope to see everyone at the Casuarina again.

Room Tip: We chose the upstairs with the balcony and probably had a better view of the gardens and the ocean t...

Have recently returned from 2 wonderful weeks at Casuarina. All staff were helpful with nothing too much trouble. We used the laundry service, as we have previously in Sri Lanka and the Maldives, so didn't look too closely at the prices - imagine our shock when at the end of the holiday the laundry bill came in at over 5,000 rupees - £115 !! Beware this is an extortionate service way over-priced in comparison with other countries.
The dive centre was excellent, the staff do everything there for you so you really are on holiday, and the dive sites are interesting.
Room was comfortable, spotlessly clean but beware even with all-inclusive you have to pay for tea and coffee in your room!
All in all an excellent holiday but with a few hidden extra costs.

We wish to extend our deepest thanks to you for your positive comments following your stay of two weeks at the Casuarina Resort & Spa.
However , we would like to bring about the following remarks :

Our Laundry Service is inclusive of dry cleaning and ironing which forms part of a supplementary service available in your room together with a bag dedicated for that particular service with a well detailed price list in the cupboard. Each and every guest is requested to sign the attached document before processing; everythings looks so obvious and we were available for any queries .

Your All inclusive package is subjected to an agreement between the Tour Operator and the Hotel Management as regards to a defined budget and agreed service. The mini- bar contents as well as the coffee/tea service are not included in your package . For your kind information a document with necessary details of different services available was remitted to you on the very first day of your arrival .

In view of the above , we believe that everything was clear and straight forward

Thank you again for your positive comments .

If you are not staying at half-board or all inclusive basis - it's better to cook yourself. Mauritius itself is not expensive, but food and drinks in the hotel are mad expensive compare to the shops and the restaurants outside! First night we paid approximately €60 for carvery food for two! It was first and last time we ate in the hotel. 1l bottle of mineral water in the bar in the hotel is 90 mauritian rupees when in the supermarket 6 bottles of 1.5l bottles cost 99 mauritian rupees. Totally rip off - even though it is still cheap for i.e. Irish citizens.

However hotel itself is very nice, clean with few problems like ants in the kitchen area (but that's understandable as Mauritius is full of sugar cane), small orange lizards - permanet guests in the room, and rats (I've seen one in our kitchen!).

The staff in the hotel is very friendly and helpful. There are two swimmingpools - spotless clean, with plenty of sunbeds. Hotel also has private, lovely beach, with plenty of sunbets. They have as well free water kayaks, water bikes, and few other including glassbottom boat to watch coral reef and snorkelling. Good experience and included in the price of stay.

I would recommend this hotel, but only on half-board or all inclusive basis. It's not worth to pay for everything separately.

Room Tip: bungalows are bigger and more comfortable

Many thanks for your positive comments as regards to our hotel, however we wish to bring about our personal views as representative of the hotel management:-

In the first instance, you came as “Walking Guests” from a different hotel and we were very pleased to host you in a self-catering bungalow equipped with a kitchen.

It is normal that hotel prices for foods and drinks are not comparable to those of restaurants in the vicinity.

You paid the right price for the buffets as that charged for outside guests on self-catering. We offer a wide variety of dishes at dinner time; you could choose between 6 mixed salads, green salads + raw vegetables, condiments, salad dressings, selection of bread, 2 hot dishes (meat or fish or chicken either grilled or cooked in sauce), 4 varieties of garnish (fresh vegetables), 1speciallity of our french chef, 8 varieties of desserts and fresh fruits. Our prices are benchmarked with other hotels of the same category.

Our property adheres strictly to the Pest Control policy which is contracted to an external well-known company. The same property is part of a six-hectare tropical luxurious, exotical garden.

You mistook the hedgehog which is very inoffensive to a rat in the garden.

You were explained in details your concern of the pests by our management team before your departure from the hotel. We had the feeling that you had understood what was explained to you.

As regards to the ripping contention, we are a very honest and trustworthy company who looks after the well-being of all our guests from their arrival to their departure. However, we wish to remind you that, being in the hospitality business, we are a profit-making enterprise.
