“Amazing honeymoon”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 13, 2013

We have just returned from a fantastic holiday at Lux Le Morne. We had an absolutely wonderful time - there are so many positive things that I can say about our stay.
From the moment we arrived at the hotel we were really impressed with the hotel, the location and most of all, the amazing staff. The hotel is located right on the beach - all rooms are less that 100 steps from the water. We stayed there for 12 nights and didn't want to leave at the end of our stay. The staff at the boat house (at the end of the beach) were really helpful with recommending water based activities and took the safety of guests very seriously. To be honest we spent most of our time by the pool, on the beach or in one of the restaurants - we were really looking forward to a relaxing holiday so we didn't plan on doing too much, and I can honestly say, I have never felt so relaxed in my whole life!
I have read many of the reviews on trip advisor before and I must admit that I was concerned that I had read quite a few negative reviews about the food. However, I really didn't need to worry as we were so impressed with the choice and quality of food at the hotel. Breakfast included freshly made pancakes, waffles, French toast, a selection of pastures, cereals, toast, different breads for toasting, eggs cooked any way you like them, cold meats and cheeses, yoghurt and so much more. The buffets in the kitchen restaurant (main restaurant) each evening were really delicious - I would particularly recommend the Mauritian evening, the Mediterranean buffet and the bistro buffet. The Beach restaurant also serves delicious food - we particularly likes the fish on a skewer and the pizzas.
We loved the spa. My husband isn't a huge fan of massages but he was really impressed with the Island style massage - Jenny did a wonderful job. Our friends are visiting there in a few weeks and we have told them they must have a massage there - it's especially good if you like a firm massage!
We visited in their winter, but for us, the weather was great - we did have a few showers but it brightened up in the afternoon and wasn't uncomfortably hot.
The rooms were really spacious and clean. The house keeping staff did a wonderful job in tidying each morning, and turning down in the evenings. The Lux shampoo and shower gel was a really nice touch, as were the slippers placed by the bed in the evenings.
Although we didn't use it (sadly forgot my trainers!!), the gym was really well resourced and relatively busy as we walked past it on the way to dinner!
We chose to go all inclusive and this was definitely the best option. It meant we could enjoy a range of food and drinks without having to worry about spending more than we should.
We chose to go swimming with dolphins - a really amazing experience and a day trip on a catamaran which included seeing the dolphins and snorkelling. Apart from that, we spent the rest of our time in the hotel.
Finally, I just wanted to say how impressed we were with the staff at the hotel. Moonesh (on the reception) particularly stood out for us. Nothing was too much trouble and he was incredibly kind and professional at all times. We also thought very highly of the staff in the restaurants, especially Alvin (from the Kitchen), Shiva (from the boat house), Preetam (from the kitchen) and many, many more.
We were so impressed with the attitude of all staff - everyone was so friendly and nothing was too much trouble. We will definitely return for another holiday!

Dear Beth12345209011,
I know your feeling when you say that 12 days are not enough to enjoy your (any) holiday but imagine thse who only come for one week....
Thank you for praising many of our team members including Moonesh, Alvin, Shiva, and Preetam. We are really proud of them and they will get to know about your comments.

Dear 80chandan,
honeymooners make indeed the majority of our guests. I am so happy that we have been able to help you celebrate life during your honeymoon. What is also nice is that more and more Mauritian guests are exploring this beautiful part of the island still unknown to many. We really hope to see you again and rest assured that your compliments will be shared with Ravi and his team.

On our 14th annual trip to the island we stayed at Lux Le Morne for the second time. A beautiful hotel situated in superior grounds with wonderful staff. A perfect location for a quiet family vacation or indeed a perfect destination and hotel for couples and honeymooners. The pools are lovely, however you would expect in a 5 star hotel to have the option to simply stroll to a sun lounger at your leisure without the usual fight for them with your towels. On a couple of ocasions we had to listen to fellow holiday makers arguing over their lounger reservation with a towel, not what you want hear whilst on an exclusive resort holiday, petty arguments...LUX please get more loungers around the pools and extend the choice on the pool bar menu which is extremely limited... Overall the food was nice, it did become very repetitive, we were there for 3 weeks and by the second week we new exactly what was on the menu each day the following week, the beach bar which is perfect in terms of location, over looking the sea and sunsets in a relaxed environment, ideal for families, was our favourite, except for the menu which was very limited and did not change from one week to the next... The rooms are lovely we stayed in a Prestige Junior suite, kept clean daily by the staff, we did have to complain regarding the air conditioning which created black moisture on the walls and ceilings, they cleaned this off however it was obvious the filters were at fault and needed changing, we were reluctant to use it having a young family. We had a lovely outdoor shower which was great, however from a security aspect wasn't great as there was only a simple floor mounted lock on a glass door leading to the bathroom, not particularly safe in my opinion. ?.The in room entertainment which is essential with a young family was poor, kids TV was on offer but restricted to the French channels whilst the kids club offered DVDs they too were all in French, surely a little more thought needs to go into this, considering what people are paying for this hotel. Finally the continuous ads on the LUX channel for the wonderful coffee bar certainly tempted the coffee lover in my family to indulge, however the iced Frappes a particular favourite of hers were not available for the entire three weeks we were there, as the blender needed repairing...please a replacement blender in an exclusive 5* hotel isn't too much to ask is it? Whilst these are a few niggles, overall the experience at Lux Le Morne was a memorable and much loved one, whilst we plan to return as we do each year, these few changes would make a wonderful hotel into an amazing one. See you in February 2014... Paul Blanksby

Dear pblanksby1,
thank you for your detailed review and for sharing it with other travelers.
I have taken onboard all of your comments and I can assure you that, should you decide to come back of course, you will not experience those little "niggles" again.
For example the sunbeds, we have in fact over 250 of them in the resort, the trouble is that sometimes guests have a preference for a particular spot which makes the hunt for the sunbed. But with 50 more sunlounger in addition to the existing one I am sure this will no longer happen.

I will also share your comments about the repetitiveness of our menus with our Executive Chef and while we are trying our level best to provide choices to our guests it is always possible to custom made a menu for you, even if this needs to be on a daily basis. So please, don't hesitate to ask anything off the menu next time.

Finally our coffee. We are very proud to talk about Cafe' LUX*. Our coffee beans are freshly roasted in the Island at our sister Hotel LUX* Belle Mare daily and delivered to us 2/3 times a week. That's where the freshness and aroma is the strenght of Cafe' LUX*.
Under no circumstances we should have had a blender out of order and I am sorry an alternative was not offered. We have purchaced since several new blenders and all our bars are equipped to provide FrappeLUX* at will.

Thank you once again for sharing your comments and look forward to the 15th anniversary!

Best Regards

When we entered the hotel there were 3 people waiting to greet us, to take our luggage and to serve us refreshing drinks before we go to our rooms. We had a great lunch in their restaurant... Pizza was piping hot and very tasty, the food service was great, we had a great view of the beach from the restaurant, our rooms were very big, there were beautiful trees around the hotel making it look beautiful, we went on the pedallo straight away it was very fun... Highly recommend others to spend more than a week there because I definitely would

We stayed at Lux for four days last week, and all in all, had a pretty fantastic time. Gorgeous, spotless rooms with stunning views (if you pick the right ones- the Prestige and Superior suites are amazing). Four amazing pools with a view of both, the ocean and the mountain, so none get too crowded. Lovely service at the restaurants, but sadly the food- true to Mauritius's reputation, is hugely mediocre, disappointing even. But that didn't take away from the joy of just being in Le Morne, as the hotel was just plain gorgeous, and very close to Chamarel, which was charming. The other disappointing thing was the hotel charging ASTRONOMICAL rates for paying the bill in foreign exchange. When we were told we would be paying at a rate that was a whopping 15% higher than the official rate (we paid in pounds), we were extremely upset and made sure that wasn't done. But sad that we needed to make an issue about it: No hotel should behave that way (indeed any of the other hotels we have stayed at have never had this issue- while the rate may be a bit higher, a surcharge of 2-3% I understand, but 15% on what is already a large bill is just ridiculous). But all in all, it would be unfair to say we didn't have a lovely holiday, in fact, one of the best ever. Just watch for these few things, and prepare for a magical time.

Room Tip: We had the Prestige suite and it was magnificent. Direct access to the beach, and a spectacular view...

Dear VedikaOberoi,
thank you for the fairness of your comments and for overall enjoying your holiday at LUX* Le Morne. We are currently reviewing our foreign currency cash payment policy and I would also like to inform you that most international credit cards are widely accepted in our resort to avoid any exchange surcharge.
In fact foreign currency, although accepted, needs to be changed into Mauritian Rupees in order to settle any bills and generally we do not encourage guests to pay cash unless this is their wish.
On another note I am surprised about your comment on the "reputation" of the food in Mauritius. I can understand that you might be disappointed about your experience but generalising on Mauritius as whole is puzzling me. In two years spent working and visitng many establishments I have hardly been able to define any of my experiences mediocre or less and never hear such general comment by many guests who have visited Mauritiu since many years.

I hope my answer will help other travelers too.

With best personal regards.

We have just returned from our honeymoon which included 6 nights at Lux le Morne end July.

Overall the hotel is excellent: rooms, food, beach, pools and gardens were all the best that we have ever experienced.

The only negatives were that all 3 pools were freezing, my husband didn't venture in at all. As a result there were very few people in them.

The entertainment was also disappointing, Saturday night was good with a band and people dancing. However on the other nights there was zero atmosphere in the bar area and very few people. One night we even borrowed a DVD and watched that in our room!

The hotel is ideal for honeymooners but I would not recommend it for families as children are not catered for.

Despite the couple of quibbles above this hotel has an exclusive atmosphere and is definitely in a class of it's own.

We travelled as a family with a 14 month old toddler and it was our first time to Mauritius (having previously been several times with and without child to Maldives so have an Indian Ocean comparison and visited Lux Maldives too). Firstly the location of the hotel is stunning, spread out in front of the Le Morne mountain and the beach is beautiful. Guaranteed every evening were these amazing sunsets which we could even see from our Junior Prestige Suite room. The grounds are beautiful and very well cared for and the starscape at night is mesmerising - with a toddler this was perfect grounds for him to roam around with pristine grass everywhere (very well watered with hidden sprinklers) and lush flowers.

Our room we liked though we have to admit it's not toddler friendly so you have to keep your wits about you as there are some hazards especially near the shower and sharp furniture corners but the room is stylish, with wi fi, great shower and nice toiletries, big wall mounted TV, specially requested high chair in room (needed a through clean though) which made in room feeding easier, being on All inclusive a decently stocked fridge and a nice patio area. It's probably a buit on the small side for us especially when we compare it to Maldivian rooms we have had in the past, plus the bed is honestly ridiculously high and for me far too soft and the lighting far too dim.....for a romantic couple it might be better suited, for me I like a bit more light.

I dived several times and being in off season this was still decent diving - it's a relaxed approach to diving which is fine and they could only choose the dive site that mornign depending on the prevailing weather...no sharks as such but pleny of other life but poor coral....a couple of the dives had superb visibility. I also think it is well priced too.

We both visited the spa - I would enquire what the deals are each morning - and the spa is really excellent with great treatments - my wife said she had her best pedicure ever and I would thoroughly recommend the massages. Very professional and it feels indulgent.

There are several eating options and you should plan accordingly - for us the food ranged from excellent to average. Some nights in the Kitchen when it was the Bistro night or Mediterranean night I thought were excellent with a lovely range in the buffet. Other nights in the Kitchen like the Oriental (NOT Oriental but Arabic) and the Table d'Hote night the food was thoroughly disappointing indeed. If for example you are on All Inclusive it's terrible to be presented with a table d'hote menu where the four main courses are mostly spicy and the only items of interest are at a substancial premium extra cost. Additionally I extremely object as a resident of a 5* hotel on the Mauritian night where entertainment is put on to find the hotel has opened its biggest restaurant to non residents and the place is packed that the only table we were given, we had squeeze our pram in and was next to a clearing and cleaning station - totally unacceptable. I think breakfast in particular needs improvement - not enough choice and repetitive as were the desserts most nights in the Kitchen.

In the Beach restaurant I have to say this was really consistently lovely both at lunch and dinner and I would say this would be my restaurant of choice - food was delicious. Also we throughly enjoyed the service on the beach both drink and food - just excellent and very tasty.

The drinks throughout the hotel are good - plenty of choice though I think the cocktail making is not brilliant - you have to work your way through a few to find what you like and be very specific as to how you would like your drink made up (eg caiparenhias are with lime not lemon) and my wife recommends the non alcoholic mixed fruit drinks - bit of room for improvement here. My wife also says the coffee is amazing.

We tried the Nipa restaurant one night - great service but we weren't over inspired by the cooking - sort of bland so we never returned - it was also awkward to get to with a pram (our baby was often asleep at dinner time). On this point I would say that access whether you have a pram or I guess are disabled is not great.....stairs into the reception area where the Kitchen is, stepping stones to get to the Beach (over the grass is easier) and Nipa is awkward too.

The top top top amazing aspect of the hotel is the fantastic naturally friendly staff - without question without doubt the top asset of the hotel.....I am not sure if it is the natural demeanour of Mauritians or great training but it's lovely and you enjoy meeting and interacting with all staff from restaurants to gardeners, the kids club, the spa or cleaning staff.

So this was almost a perfect holiday, some major food niggles aside, however the biggest let down for us, both as adults and as parents is that the two beautiful pools (the one by reception seems just ornamental!) are ICE cold - unbearable and with a toddler completely unusable - we tried a couple of times but after two minutes the poor thing was shivering uncontrollably which is a shame as he loves the water. The sea is cold too at that time of year so you can't spend long in there either. For our baby we improvised by using the foot bowl on the patio and filled that with water - but really was that what we had to resort to? I raised this with the general manager but the response was it was too expensive to heat them. So no matter how much we loved the hotel and the location and the staff - we just could not return in the low season with pool temperature like that. The air temperature was great - sunny every day and about 24 degrees but that's the only heat you will get outdoors!

Thank you Lux le Morne and the wonderful staff - we had an amazing time and loved your staff but we'll either return to Mauritius in high season next time (but then probably too hot for an infant child) or find a hotel with heated pools.

Room Tip: Junior prestige suite - just as near as the ocean front to the beach plus has the outside shower...

Dear AndrewF,
thank you for your very detailed review. I am sure many travelers will benefit from it.
We hope that you have mentioned about your preference for a firmer mattress to our team. We have invested huge amount of time in researching the ''near to perfect" sleeping experience and our new beds have been very successfull so far. But of course we will respect your preference and in fact we do have options with firmer mattress in the resort.

Best time for sharks is around January/February, this year was exceptionally good with many big ones nearly every day.

With reference to the main restaurant, I can assure you that the guests you noticed were not outsiders but hotel residents. Mauritians love to spend week ends in Resorts from time to time. I will, however share your comments about the variety with our executive chef and I am sure to fix it quickly.
Thank you for your wife's comments on the coffee. We are very proud to say that our beans are freshly roasted in the Island by ourselves at LUX* Belle Mare, where a trained roast master delivers twice weekly freshly roasted beans.

Finally the pools. We are studying the possibility to use solar power to heat our pools, or at least one.
Once again thank you for your comments and we look forward to welcome you back.

Best Regards
