“Our Second Honeymoon”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 10, 2014

very late to review sorry guys.

My wife and i stayed here in November to have a lovely eight days rest after a busy safari and a very stressful year at home.
We chose here to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary and wanted somewhere with a beautiful tropical beach.

We paid for an upgrade to have one of the garden rooms which overlooked the beach and was well worth paying for location wise. Everything worked and they were of a good size. The rooms were not particularly luxurious with plain concrete slab floors and fairly basic fittings & furniture but the staff, food and the location more than make up for it.

We had clean linen everyday and our amazing room cleaner created a different linen towel themed animal or object which was really nice touch. Despite the rooms being a little tired they were always clean.

This is a very romantic setting and if you want to lay on a stunning white sandy beach and bathe in the beautiful crystal water this is the place to go. we saw at least three wedding ceremonies during the week which was very special. Beautiful kept gardens and beach everyday no rubbish!

We steered clear of the excursions laid on by the agents at the hotel because they were very over priced indeed. After speaking with some of the locals we decided to catch the express air conditioned bus and it cost about £2.50 return for both of us amazing value for money.

We found the local people were very friendly but there was very little luxury and a great deal of obvious poverty around which was sad but very interesting to see how the locals lived.

Food in the hotel was served on a buffet basis for all meals and you were given an excellent choice everyday with a different theme. We usually sat outside in the courtyard and loved watching the moon light every night. Food quality was good for a 600 seated restaurant but not really of a gourmet standard, you could eat what you wanted and as much as you wanted and it just depends on how fussy you are.Our advice is to only go fully inclusive if you are big drinkers otherwise half board is plenty.

generally the staff were helpful and cared abut the residents and made you feel very welcome
We did not try eating in any restaurants but did use the supermarket in the small local town to buy snacks and water etc.

Overall we had a lovely stay and we would stay in this hotel again if ever we were in that area of Mauritius

Room Tip: Be careful to establish your room location as you could be allocated at the back with no sun or view

We stayed here in December, bringing in the new year in at Le Mauricia. When we arrived we were greeted warmly by the staff, they explained how things worked as we were on the AI package and since we arrived very early the morning our room was not ready as yet. We however, proceeded to have breakfast and started enjoying the pool.
I was highly dissapointed when we were finally taken to our room. Firstly walking through the passages we got to see how old the hotel really was and the ROOM was so standard and poorly "cleaned" that we started contemplating whether we should upgrade - but decided not to. Bar fridge items were also very minimal and only had about 3 - 5 basic items in it.

The pool area next to the main restaraunt and bar area was lovely. My 3 year old daughter loved the pool and they catered to her need for chocolate milkshakes - pool side. The food, i.e. breakfast, lunch and dinner was nothing to write home about. It was bland and tasteless and then their excuse is that the hotel caters for European tastes.

The kids club was nice, my daughter enjoyed that. The staff there were very nice and they had good activities planned for the kids daily. I did not get to see the toilet and shower facilities that the kids were using, but from reading a previous review i am glad i did not!

We also took the opportunity to go and have dinner at Le Cannonier one night and here again we were dissapointed. Food was as bland as their sister hotel! Le Mauricia also has a "spa"/ wellness centre where we one day went for relaxation massages but it was more of a body rub than anything else!

With regards to shopping - we went into Grand Bay town which is walking distance from the hotel. The market was great, got some nice things at good prices and there was a shopping centre called Super U also not far from the resort - a place to get some things from the pharmacy, retail store, etc

After everything, we were so glad to go home and i will definitely not be staying there again. What a disspointed to a beachcomber resort!!

...but maybe not so much for business travellers.

Fair enough, I should have checked, but arriving on a delayed flight from Madagascar and quickly wanting to eat something, and check my work mails in my room, I found out that neither was possible unfortunately.

I was meeting a friend at the Mauricia upon my arrival, we got to the bar at 10.20pm.
In my case dead tired and starved but unfortunately no food possible. It felt like we hardly started talking when the -very friendly btw, like all the Mauricia staff- waitress came to tell us the bar was closing at 11pm.
Pity.

I tried to check mails in the lobby (where the Wifi works; as well as in the restaurant and some other communal areas) but it was so dreadfully slow and I got eaten up alive by mosquitoes so in the end gave up and went to bed.
I travel a lot in 'development' countries and had just arrived from one (Madagascar), so found it a bit ironic that on Mada my WiFi was working flawlessly, and fast, in my hotel room but not so on Mauritius.

The room amenities are all fine, clean, and working.
After meetings the next day (Friday) I could finally relax the Saturday morning before my flight back home and went to the beach and to the Ayurvedic spa. Both were excellent!
The spa staff went out of their way to create a 1 hour special combination of massages and treatments and it worked out just perfect.
The breakfast buffet is very good, gets a bit messy later in the morning but that is usual in bigger hotels, staff tries their utmost though to keep up with the hungry crowd.
Location of the Mauricia is the best, right in Grand Baie, you can walk anywhere basically.

The location is absolutely perfect. 5 min walk on the beach and you are in the Grand Baie Village.
The beach is incredible. The calm see-through waters (with only sand at the bottom) of the bay made my holiday. It was the first beach were I could not get enough of swimming. You just want to stay in the water. The beach-hawkers are irritating, but you get used to ignoring them.

The hotel on the other hand should be bulldozed down. Its old, and dodgy.
The buildings of the standard rooms remind of East Block.
We stayed in a family apartment. From the outside it looked good.
The room was situated at the bottom of the stairs, so unwelcome noise disturbance early mornings and late evenings.. Family apartments should be better situated.
The rooms have splashes of colours which makes you like the room at a first glance. However after spending 15min in there you realise just how dirty and old the basics are. One bathroom sink was not functional. The toilet and kids bathroom was so creepy, I tried to avoid them.
Dirty corners. So dirty, they are past cleaning. See photos attached.
The entrance door had a metal splash back that was dirty and full of fingerprints thoughout our stay.

The semi-private garden area is not looked after. Full of mosquitos and ants. The sun beds that look inviting from far, on closer inspection are covered in bird droppings and ants.

On the way to the kids club we were taken through dodgy dirty narrow staircases. Old small elevators and lots of dark corners- hardly what you expect from a Beachcomber resort. We found better ways to get to the kids club, along the beach, after that. However the impression stayed.
The kids club is tucked away in a small garden with lovely kids furniture, swings and large sand play area. Again at first glance, I wanted to be a kid again.
The bathroom/shower/toilet area which the kids use daily showering after a swim smells of toilets.
The TV was on the whole day, this I find unacceptable. Im sure its much easier to take care of kids if half of them are permanently glued to TV, but that is not my idea of my childs island experience. I felt the staff was standing around and in there own worlds a lot. They did not come to greet us when we entered the kids club . After a while when they felt obliged to approach me they did eventually and were very sweet and pleasant.
My kids said they had Fanta for dinner. We were specifically asked what may our kids drink. Juice and water is fine, no sodas! The next day I asked at kids club and it was on record that they indeed did have Fanta…
If you are considering Le Canonnier or Le Mauricia, definitely go for Le Canonnier. If you are on all inclusive it applies to both hotels equally. Come and spend the day at Le Mauricia, enjoy the beach, but don't stay there. There are definitely better places to spend your money on in Mauritius!!

I stayed there for 16 nights. The hotel is very close to the center and right at the beach. Most of the hotel looks new and clean. The room was fine, clean and with a direct sight on the pool. The breakfast offers a big variety and is very good. I did a dive course in the dive center of the hotel, which was nice.
The big issue was the room door. It doesn't close tight. So when you walk outside with high heels, you can hear everything (and when you're sleeping you're gonna wake up!) I travel a lot and in the majority of the hotels was this never a problem!

We stayed there for 4 days. The hotel's location is great, 10 mins walk to SuperU and other places.
Good things first -
The pool area is nice, so is the beach in front of it. The boat house is great, you have options of snorkelling, kayaking, pedal boating, glass bottom boats, surfing etc etc.
The bar is nice and they have some entertainment planned every night. Restaurants are good too
Not so good -
We took the sea view room on the first floor, the room is pretty basic, and small, they have room service charged and did not even bring wine glasses to the room when I asked. the breakfast is good and spread is huge but the same on all days, after 4 days I was bored of it. Service is ok ok as well, staff is polite but do not bother to go any extra mile for the guests.
