“Perfect beach retreat”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 4, 2012

We have just returned from a great week`s stay at the Merville. The hotel , as many guests have mentioned, is run by a great team of staff members all under the supervison of Tony, who, if he see`s you in the hotel at any point, will stop, chat and advise anything you need to know and not just a manager who wants to sit and dish out instructions to others ! Regarding the hotel, we stayed in a superior room (544) in the main block which had views over-looking the spa centre, which was amazing valve for money with a beach side massage ! (Full use and 90mins treatment appx. £100.00 for 2 people). If you have a room by the gardens like us, the evening sounds of the water-gardens frogs will amuse you....

We were on an AI basis and this IS the way too go, the drinks are shown on the drinks menu which are included and which are not , but the £4 beers and £8.00 cocktails wouls sound rack up your costs. (lunch is included in the AI option, however, if you chose pizza on the beach, this is not at appx. £7.00 great pizza tho !)

The hotel is in a great area, you can walk into town (daylight only) or take a taxi (£5.00), if a day out to Port Louis is on your agenda, take the local bus (express 215) from Grand Baie , cost 32MRP (0.80P) one way. and visit the marine area and market place.

After our first week in Dubai, this was going to be a chillout week so we have no comments on the hotel trips, however, if you want a day out to be treated like a king & queen, book the afternoon (Saturday`s only) to the horse racing. The trip costs appx. £120.00 pp, but this includes private transport to the race couse (45 mins ) a private box with appx. 20 people per box, all free drinks (champagne included) and free buffet, the box in on the winning line with full view off the course and you meet great people in your area to have a fun time - between 12.00 - 5pm - a must do even if horse racing is not your thing !

The last night, we arranged dinner on the beach and this a lovely way to end your holiday, the staff set the table up and you can either self-service from the buffet or choose the set meal which is waiter serviced, the cost is appx. £14.00 to set-up the table).

Overall, the hotel is great valve and good for all people, last week we saw three weddings, had a 30 strong under 18 South Africa boys rugby team and many familes in the hotel so, it caters for everyone. But, a special thank you to Tony and Rava (he`s the man for the horse racing) for giving us a fantasic 2012 holiday at The Merville Beach...

Ian & Glenice Whitbread (or as the lads called us in the boat house, Mr & Mrs Brownbread cause of the tan !).

Well, just back in UK following. Our fifth return to Merville Beach. We have stayed in 5 and 6 star hotels but the staff in this hotel beats them all hands down for professionalism and friendliness, nothing is too much trouble for the staff here, any request is greeted with efficiency and a BIG SMILE!. Our greatest thanks for yet another first class holiday must especially go to Restaurant Manager Rama who now feels like an old friend to us, he made my birthday (and Honeymoon) dinner on the beach very special and a memory we will always treasure, also Francoise his trusty sidekick. Fazal and his team in the boathouse are something else - knowledgable, accommodating, friendly and always ready to smile and laugh, a truly lovely bunch of people. Khalida in the shop(which seems to be forgotten amongst everything else) a genuine, beautiful lady always ready to help with anything she can with a smile.
Sorry this review is so long but please bear with me as there is so much to say about the Merville. We have stayed in most rooms over the past 7 years, the bungalows being our favourite. Yes, some rooms do need a lick of paint but have good facilities and the ambience of the hotel more than make up for this. MEALS - food is good and plenty although my husband likes to eat curries very often, this was accommodated, you only need to ask at the Merville if you want anything other than is being served. BEACH/ACTIVITIES are excellent, clean beach towels always available. GARDENS and grounds beautiful and kept in excellent condition by gardening staff.
To sum up - thinking of Maritius? Easy choice, choose the Merville Beach you won't be disappointed (if you are just speak to the management and they will be more than happy to help). We hope to be returning as soon as finances allow, until then we miss our "second family" at the Merville, God Bless.

Room Tip: If you dislike the room you are given just speak to Management who will be more than happy to help i...

Thank you for staying at Merville Beach for the fifth time, moreover for taking the time to comment on your recent visit,

I have passed on your encouraging words to Rama, Faisal, Khalida, Francois and of course to the rest of the team.

Good news, we are presently undergoing a soft refurbishment in your favourite rooms (Bungalow rooms) and hope you will find the changes to your convenience.

The whole team and I are eager to see you back to your Mauritian home, meanwhile, do accept our renewed thanks for your patronage and fidelity towards Merville beach.

Yours sincerely

We have just returned from the Merville and have thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. The hotel is in an excellent location with lovely beach yet walkable to town. This hotel in my opinion is suitable for everyone from couples to families with small children. The staff were very friendly and the room really big. We had upgraded to a superior room (garden room) but it seems the standard rooms are fine too. We had the usual toiletries but if you like to make yourself an extra cuppa take a travel kettle as the rooms dont have a tea/coffee maker. If you can afford it the deluxe rooms are probably the best location but we had no problems with ours at all. The meals are usually on a buffet basis changing the theme nightly but there is an option to take a set meal served at the table at no extra cost which made a nice change as these meals were excellent. We happened to have an anniversary whilst there so had mentioned this as thought may help when asking for a quiet room with upper view but were given much more as we were greeted with champagne, fruit etc and given an even more special meal on the anniversary date. We couldnt fault their generosity. I suppose the only small critisism which everyone seems to notice is the price of the drinks if you are half board. A small beer is approx. £4 which as you can imagine doesnt last long and hence many guests retire to their rooms early which is a shame as the bar area is lovely. May be this changes as the season progresses. There are lots of trips available too if you prefer to go via the hotel but these are a lot cheaper if you pop into town. Im sure its the same wherever you travel. Sure you will enjoy your holiday at the Merville

Sir/Madam,

Thank you for choosing Merville Beach during your stay in Mauritius and moreover for your encouraging comments.

To one of your comments about the tea/coffee facilities in the room, we are happy to inform you that we have just introduced this facility in all Bungalows' rooms and deluxe rooms. We intend to introduce same in the standard rooms as well but at a later stage.

We are sorry that the price of our beer was not to your expectation but would like to mention that we do maintain the same price margin practiced by most of the hotels of the same category in Mauritius. We take the opportunity to inform you that we do promote "All inclusive package" for a nominal supplement which could be an alternative to you.

In the meantime we look forward to welcoming you back to Merville Beach and do let me know if you need assistance whatsoever from this little corner of the world.

We enjoyed the first nights of our honeymoon at Merville beach and were delighted with the friendliness of the staff and the excellent food. Our room overlooked the garden and beach so we enjoyed the sound of birds on the balcony in the morning :) Night entertainment was always great fun-especially the sega dancing troupe. Overall our experience at Merville beach was far better than our stay at a well known five star resort in the the west coast of mauritius. We also appreciated the fact that locals could set up their own stall in the evening near the restaurant to sell their local produce.
We have many pleasant memories of Merville to treasure forever. A big thanks to the staff and even to the guy selling jewellery on the beach...he really had a pleasant character :)

Sir/Madam,

Thank you for choosing Merville Beach for your honeymoon in Mauritius. We would also like to thank you for your encouraging comments which I shall certainly pass on to the team members as well as the guy selling jewellery on the beach.

High standards of service are of extreme importance at Merville Beach and I trust that you will find this even better on future visits, may be on your first wedding anniversary, who knows...

Until then we wish to assure you of our hospitality at all times and do let me know if I can be of any help to you.

I stayed with my Family in Early Sep. It was for two Anniverseries - 25 and 50. For this achievement we were given the Beach Dinner meal, This was well done and much appreciated. The Beach is the best part of The Hotel. You can snorkel, pedalo,Kayak, sail,Glass bottom Boat, or just watch. All Inclusive proved to be the best way for us. We all enjoy a drink and with Lunch included with Breakfast and Dinner this proved a Winner. Breakfast was fine as was the various Lunches. Dinner was a different Theme every night - sometimes it lacked in appeal, was always adequate. The House wine proved to be perfectly OK. The Staff were very helpfull and friendly. The Boat House crew who did the towels and sea ventures were top class. Two waiters must be mentioned Neel and Kris (?). We did a Catamaran cruise with BBQ etc. with Dennis from the Beach. This was excellent value. A very good Hotel in a super location.

Room Tip: We were in Bungalows - but the Extra Quality looked very good as well.Sea Views are worth the Extra.

We have spent 8 days in this great hotel in March and it was one of the best vacations we have ever been!

We have booked a superior room with sea view, it was a bit more expensive than standard rooms but really worth! We had a big balcony, every evening we have spent 1-2 hours there with a bottle of wine and it was a phantastic experience...

Location of the hotel is great, one of the most beautiful beaches on the island belongs to the hotel. Center of Grand Baie is appr. 15-20 min walk, but there is a bus as well, or there are taxis waiting at the entrance.

Service level is really high, staff is very friendly and correct, the boathouse offers a lot of servives for free (snorkeling, glass-bottom boat, water ski, etc) and for some others one have to pay (swimming with dolphins, undersea walking...). They offer some excursions as well, but we have agreed with one of the beach boys, because they offer the same excursions, but one can negotiate a lower price with them.

Food is great, we were at half board and it was enough: a good breakfast (the "Merville omlette" is phantastic) and great dinner: every evening there was a tematic dinner, like Mauritian food on one day, Mediterranean on the other, Chinese on the third, etc. Every evening there were at least 8-10 salads, 6-8 main dishes available and at least 8-10 desserts, almost all of them very good quality. (actually, we planned to go out to local restaurants in 3-4 evening, but the dinner was so good in the hotel that we decided to stay there and we went out only for 1 dinner to a fish restaurant...)

One small negative point goes to the bar: cocktails are not very nice (small and not good taste) but very expensive, so we tried it only once...

All in all, it was a phantastic vacation, we agree that if we had the opportunity to go to Mauritius again, we would choose Hotel Merville Beach again!

Room Tip: Choose superior or deluxe room, it is in another building than standard rooms, this bulding is much...

On arrival we were made welcome with a soft drink and cool towels. We were shown to our room two hours earlier than the normal check-in time which we appreciated after a long flight. We had upgraded to a superior room and were very pleased with it. Very large, airy and comfortable with big balcony and sea view. Room decor has seen better times, nevertheless acceptable.

Staff are very friendly, but found that teams had different values.

Breakfast was definitely the best meal of the day, with a good choice of fare. We were half-board.
We found the evening meal to be very samey. House wine is good value, however, one is pointed towards the very expensive bottles at the beginning of the wine list. Make sure you turn to the last page!

There are a lot of free activities available. We are avid tennis players and the main reason for the picking the Merville was the availability of tennis court(S) - there was only 1!!

Tea & coffee making facilities were non existent in the room which is surprising for a hotel of this calibre. We have stayed in three other hotels in Mauritius 3/4 star and all have provided tea & coffee facilities in our room. We requested a kettle and this was provided.

On the plus side, the hotel is situated on a beautiful beach with wonderful swimming and walks. (Pereybere is a 20 minute walk away). The gardens are lovely and well kept.

All in all the hotel is a very nice place to stay.
