“WOW!”
Reviewed May 17, 2011

We visited this hotel in September 2010 and were totally wowed from the minute we arrived. Set in acres of lush gardens and perched right on a stretch of beach it truly is a stunning resort. And the warm welcome and treatment we received throughout from the staff matched the high standards. I work for Cosmopolitan magazine and my partner is also a seasoned traveller, so between us we've stayed in many nice hotels, but this one tops our list. Our suite was spacious, luxurious and immaculately kept. From the reception to the restaurant to the bars to the beach, the staff were faultless and totally adorable in their efforts to please. Then there was the food... Fresh, imaginative, and totally delicious we were spoilt for choice at every meal. There's even a sushi bar! All inclusive food doesn't come any better. On the whole it's a quiet, couples resort which suited us just fine. But pleasingly the bar does get a little lively at night and with the staff making sure your glass is never empty, a good time is always guaranteed if that's what you're after! We'd love to return to the Maritim in higher season as this hotel really is something special - great memories.

We stayed at Maritim in April 2011 with my family of four and boyfriend, it was our second stay, we had also been 8 years before hand.
It's hard to fault this resort, a beautiful hotel on a beautiful island, and so much to do. We have visited both the Maldives and Mauritius several times and LOVE the Indian Ocean, and have stayed at the best resorts on the island but this is by far one of the nicest!

Food is amazing, buffet style each night in the Belle Vue restaurant with the option to dine at La Maree, the beach restaurant, or the Chateau, the fine dining restaurant. One thing to note for men: trousers must be worn every night and proper shoes (not flip flops or sandals) are preferred, we did find this a little daft in a buffet restaurant on a tropical island as the ladies can literally walk in in a beach dress and won't have a problem, so men - take lots of pairs of trousers!

The beach is lovely, there is a lovely man who wanders along the beach every now and then offering you drinks and ice creams! Just what you need when it's hot hot hot! The reef at Maritim is not fantastic, unfortunately a lot of it has died over the years and snorkelling is nothing like the Maldives, however as long as you don't go expecting this you will be fine, there are still fish swimming around and further out into the sea there are some pretty corals. If you want to go on holiday for the sea-life though, definitely go for the Maldives.

The assistant GM, Antje, is fantastic - always so welcoming and so eager to please and make sure we had a wonderful stay, which we did. The staff are all lovely and if you strike up a rappor with a particular waiter in the restaurant they will make sure they look after you.

The rooms are very luxurious, prestige rooms with big bathrooms with a large bath that looks into the room, and the family villa is absolutely beautiful with your own private pool. If you are a family with children this room is absolutely ideal with a main living area between the two bedrooms.

There is so much to do in Mauritius, the island itself is very interesting with waterfalls, seven coloured earth and pampelmousse gardens so it's definitely worth doing a day trip. The Maritim has giant tortoises which are over 200 years old, you can stroke their necks (which they love) and feed them leaves. There is a big beautiful waterfall and the stunning old ruins which are all within the resort. The waterskiing is also included on all inclusive so you can go as many times as you like all day long!

If you are looking for understated luxury, all inclusive and friendliness this resort is fantastic for couples or families. I would definitely recommend it to anyone!

Excellent Honeymoon location. Loved every minute!!! Beautiful hotel and rooms. Food is also great. Do not use the hotel for excursions. Cheaper to get the cab and organise your own tour.

The hotel is very good but has some things that can be improved.
The sun beds near the swimming pool are very few and in the morning when we went to breakfast were already all booked. One advice: if you want a sun bed near the pool get up earlier and put your towel and only after that go for breakfast.
The housekeeping service was very good in the first two or three days but then began to be worst. We ask to substitute the towels and they replace only one towel instead of two, we have to call several time to bring another towel.... didn't replace the tissue papers ... When we arrived we had a plate with some fruit pieces and we didn't eat the fruit. After several days the fruit plate was in the same place full of mosquitoes.
But it was the only thing. Everything else is fantastic.

This was our third visit to Mauritius, first to Maritim. Flight with Air Mauritius was worst for many years, very cramped indeed. Welcome was fine and suitcases taken to our rooms. Rooms were pretty faultless, exceptionally clean and comfortable and the room staff excellent all week. The hotel was full as it was close to Easter and therein lay a few problems. All sunbeds around the pool are 'reserved' VERY early and frustratingly not in use for good deal of day. The hotel has put up notices saying it will remove items if beds are not used after a period of time, but I dont think this is enforced. It is a lovely pool but when we were there there were alot of children and a couple of large families there together who took it over shouting at each other and playing ball games. After a day we retreated to the beach and my word what a beach....go quite a way along to outside the resturant and it is beautiful, quiet and a real pleasure. Drink service is by flag and quite good. The sea is warm with small waves.

One thing we greatly enjoyed is the very limited lunch menu for the all inc guests at the beach resturant. When you arrive you are told that you have a allowance there so most people seem to go to the buffet. This may be true but there is also a special all inc menu. The first day at the beach resturant the waitress asked if we were all inc and told us we would be much better off at the buffet. Persist and sit down. It is right at the waters edge, the food is great on the whole and drinks all inc too. You can while away a couple of hours drinking and having a served lunch as opposed to a quick one in the hot buffet up at the hotel. One of the problems is the house wine - we drink most wine and regularly buy the special offers in UK supermarkets but all the house wine had a very blue cheese smell and was about the worst wine I have ever had. The other problem was service in the buffet in the evening. After one night of no tables and no service we did complain and it did visibly improve. Several of the waiting staff seem to have little idea and just getting a knife, fork and spoon let alone a drink is a real feat. The food at the buffet is fine, we ate all meals at the hotel as did my children, we drank the beer and ate salads and never had any type of stomach problems as other reviewers.

For us the hotel was too big. We arent adverse to slow service whilst on holiday but this was a bit like faulty towers in the buffet at night. There were a few weddings whilst we were there although why couples want to get married a few metres from the pool with a crowd of people in their swimsuits watching baffles me. We have stayed in many five star hotels around the world and I would say this was expensive in comparison to others. Would I return - no. We loved the beach and rooms, but the service and wine let the hotel down. Shame as they could easily be put right. Mauritius has some of the best hotels in the world, but the Maritim is not one of them at the moment.

We went to this hotel for our honeymoon – all inclusive, which we only booked a few weeks before, so it was a bit of a rushed decision. We won’t be going back to the hotel, nor the island.

A bit of context: We are a London based couple in our mid thirties who have travelled extensively, normally staying in 5 star hotels. We can’t loaf on the beach for more than a few days before getting bored. We like to get out and do/see things. We also enjoy shopping, fine dining, and the nightlife.

This hotel is good in places, but poor in most. It’s labelled as a 4 star hotel, but fails to meet that standard in many areas. Whilst the rooms are very nice indeed (4/5 star) everything else is below par. The food is extremely average, and the quality of service ranges from shockingly poor to mediocre.

The wifi internet connection is slower than dial-up, and went down for 4 days. If you are someone like myself who needs a fast connection to check into work daily then don’t come here. 3G isn’t available in many places in the island either.

The pool is nice, but there are a distinct lack of sun beds, so unless you get up at 6am to reserve one, you will be on the beach. The pool doesn’t have a swim up bar. The golf course isn’t well kept, but is okay for a bit of fun. Bear in mind that although green fees are free, club hire for each round is £13. Bring balls and tees, as they’ll also make you buy those (£2 for 6 tees – I’m not kidding).

A couple of days after arriving we both started getting bad tummies. My wife was violently sick one night. After sharing tummy sickness stories with others at the hotel we concluded it was due to the drinks at the bar (don’t have the beer, or anything out of the pipes) and any food that wasn’t cooked (salads etc). It took about 3 days, and eating away from the hotel mainly to feel better again.

The hotel is in the middle of nowhere, so you are hotel locked unless you hire a car. We did with a great firm (www.gbccar.mu). £28 a day. No fuss.

We tried seeking out the best restaurants Mauritius could offer, and after plenty of internet searching we tried a couple, but there was nothing really high end. The Hidden Reef is probably the best. There’s one in Charmaral that’s good for lunch, with a great view (near the rum place). We tried the “fine dining” Chateaux at our own hotel, which has a great setting and service, but the food isn’t up to scratch unfortunately. The “amuse bouche” as they called it was cheese and a biscuit (go figure?). They cooked the steaks way too much, which we had to send back. Shame, as it has promise, but it’s not worth the money (£100 inc wine).

As for nightlife, the hotel entertainment was as you would expect for a hotel (nothing special), and the bar shut at 11.45pm – with us being the last ones standing around that time wondering what on earth is going on! By the way, the all inclusive drinks are low grade, and the wine is rocket fuel. If you want something drinkable you have to pay more – and they charge £30 for a £6 bottle of wine we spotted in the local supermarket. We stocked up from the supermarket, and then had a furious argument with the barman who wasn’t going to give us an ice bucket.

Back to nightlife… apparently Grand Bay is where things happen. Errr, no it isn’t. Very quiet. We aren’t looking for Ibiza etc, but a few bars with entertainment that go on to early hours isn’t too much to ask. It’s not here.

We figure the problem with lack of high end restaurants and good nightlife is down to the island having many all inclusive hotels from which people do not venture from. The business just isn’t there.

The island isn’t very exciting. There are a few factory outlet shops, all selling the same stuff, which isn’t very heavily discounted. The port has a few shops, but nothing more than a days shopping worth. We drove everywhere around the island, but nothing really stands out as having a wow factor. We visited the $1000 a night hotels also. Very nice settings, but miles out the way of anywhere. Great for beach loafers I suppose.

We did a catamaran cruise to flat island, and it was nice to get away from the hotel, but it was nothing special compared to others we’ve been on (try Jammin’ in Barbados), and expensive at £60 per head. The snorkelling at the hotel was pointless (water is too murky) and the snorkelling at flat island was depressing – all the coral is destroyed. Lots of tourist boats not really caring to look after the place according to one of the locals. We didn’t bother scuba diving, as it was over priced (£40 per dive) and the reports aren’t great.

Overall, I’d say this island is good perhaps for families, because the hotels provide lots of activities for kids, security is good, and kids can take care of themselves without worry whilst parents chill out. For couples though, unless you are a beach loafer that likes spending a lot of time in the loo and an early night, don’t come here. There are far better places in the world – the Intercontinental in Bali, or the Wynn in Vegas for example.

I have been to Mauritius 5 times in the last 4 years and the Maritim is the worst hotel I have stayed at so far !
The food is all spiced up , No alternate , even curried soup.
The staff are not interested in serving and it takes an eternity to get a drink and the bar at the pool area smells like old vomit.
The pool was freezing !

Room Tip: Not on the same floor as the main foyer, Noisy
