“Excellent Hotel and Location . Services Not Upto Mark”
Reviewed March 16, 2013

We had visited Mauritius for our Honeymoon. Although the resort and location were excellent, the Attitude of the Front Office Staff Was really horrible and nowhere close to the standards of other Intercontinental hotels. The Room Service were always delayed (1 to 1.5 hrs wait for an order) and the hotel was always out of stock on basic amenities. We also had to follow up multiple times for any requests we had placed to the room service.

The front office staff was not at all aware of any facilities or services. Every time we had approached the reception with any query, we always got a different and confused answer.

The Only PRO about the hotel was the Food and beverage Section.

Room Tip: Deluxe Ocean View on Ground Floor Near Boat-House

Dear Nish83,

Thank you very much for your constructive feedback regarding your Honeymoon in our Resort.
First of all, on behalf of all our team members, I would like to present our apologies for not delivering the service you were expecting.
I have shared your comments regarding the lack of follow up and attentiveness of our team members especially at front desk, housekeeping and room service with their respective Senior Managers as indeed this is not acceptable.
I am glad to read that at least you enjoyed our bars and restaurants and brought some nice memories of your Honeymoon in Mauritius.

I hope to have the pleasure to welcome you again to provide you with a Unique, Authentic and Enriching experience.

1) Room service is the worst, hotel is big and they do not have enough staff to manage the hotel.
2) Rooms are also not managed properly, bathroom fittings were broken, room had lot of ants.
3) Location of the rooms are good.
4) The room service guys suggested to go and have food in restaurant because they were not able to serve hot food in room,(Excuse room is far away from restaurant)
5) I had asked for first aid kit it took them 30min to get it. Nobody was even picking up the emergency number. If it was an real emergency than god knows what would have happened.
6) I had even spoken to Asst. Gen Manager regarding the issues but no change.
7) Only good part was the food and SPA. The restaurant managers and chef's are really co-operative and they specially prepared Jain Food for us daily. I appreciate the chef's(Vijay(Veda Restaurant) and Vedish(Noble House Restaurant)) effort and thank them for such wonderful food.
8) Last and most important this hotel is not even in the best 25 Mauritian hotel's and i am talking about the local Mauritius ratings and not any particular website.

So if somebody wants to go to this hotel the only reason would be food.

Room Tip: Rooms near boat house would be good for honeymooners are the beach is good at that point and also sw...

First of all I would like to thank you for taking the time to share your feedback and for choosing to stay with us for your Honeymoon.
I remember we met and discussed the points listed in your post and I would like to present my sincere apologies if you did not notice any change as we did discuss it the next morning with all our Senior Managers.
I will reinforce the message with all of them to make sure that proper follow up is done.
However I am delighted to read that our Indian (Vijay) and Asian Fusion (Vedish) Chefs made the difference for you.

GOOD's
1) Excellent Rooms with all modern amenities. We liked the TV in the bathroom.
2) Nice Food at the Senso Restaurant especially for Veggies..
3) Nice honeymoon room decoration during check in..
4) Stunning candle light dinner by the beach.
5) Helpful Staff..
6) Nice SPA treatment (Although the Fire Alarm drill were more than a nuisance)
7) Stunning view of the ocean from the Private Beach
8) Tour guides (Exotic Dreams) were very warm and friendly..
9) Friendly Guest Relations Managers and front office managers..
10) Giant Lobby..

BAD's
1) Had food at Veda's just once..but did not like it..Surprisingly, Senso was much better
2) Menu at Senso for breakfast was more or less the same every day..Especially for Veggies.
3) Hefty Charges for 1 Litre of Mineral water.. No concept of Tap water..
4) Cannot walk bare foot on beach as the sand pricks the foot..
5) No Life jackets provided for Glass bottom boat ride which is very risky..
6) We waited in the lobby from 11 AM to 2 PM in the HOT lobby for check in.. Something should be done for incoming guests who are already tired after their long journey in flights...The lobby should have some sort of air conditioning..
7) Poor Wi-fi connectivity even in the Lobby..
8) The Seat in Coach facility provided by the hotel were not up to the mark. AC's did not work in some of the coaches. It was too congested in some of the trips..
9) The TV in the room should have more indian channels.. Currently, only 2 are available. Also the range of remote control is poor. Cannot operate it from bed.
10) The concept of booking (Vedas, complimentary activities like spa water sports) should be eliminated.. Many couples who travelled with us forgot to book at vedas and could not get a chance to dine at their preferred restaurant..
11) Located in a secluded place... You need to hire a cab to go out of the hotel which would cost you a hefty amount..
12) One cannot view the Oceans/sea from their room balconies at all.. The trees block all the views.. even tried this from the second floor..I am not too sure what could be done as a workaround to this problem but certainly, unobstructed ocean view would be a cherry on top of a cake...

My Verdict: Go for it.. Every property will have some pros and cons..

Room Tip: Select rooms close to the lobby.. Select rooms beginning with the series "15" (Eg: 1512)

Dear DJROCKS16,

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your constructive feedback with us. As you rightly said, we can always improve and we will!
I am delighted to read that you enjoyed the facilities of your room, your Honeymoon package inclusions and the selection of veg food in Senso.
I am sorry to read that you did not like the food served in our Indian Restaurant Veda as most of the time we get great feedback. Should you have further details, please feel free to contact the hotel so that I can forward it to our Indian Chef to fine tune his menus.
We are currently setting up the WiFi in the whole resort and it will be operational by the end of March. This should make it more stable and robust.
We have had 2 Cyclonic alerts in Jan / Feb and have been working hard to resand the beach and put it back to normal shape. Now that the Cyclonic season is over we will organize another resanding to make it even nicer and softer!
I will review your comments regarding the life jackets for the glass bottom boat as they are definitely provided in the boat. I will find out why it was not explained and offered to you.
As you have seen our Lobby is massive and open. Therefore we are not able to put A/C in there. We will review with our Chief Engineer what other options we can work on.
We have put in place bookings system to avoid confusion and frustration for the guests. As we have limited seat / space, we cannot leave it as 1st come 1st serve. The fairess way was to implement a reservation system to allow each and every one to have a chance to go and taste our different restaurants and facilities.
We are constantly trimming our Coconut trees to try and keep the views as clear as possible.

I am glad you enjoyed your time with us and I hope to have the chance to welcome you again in the near future so that you can see the improvement put in place thanks to your feedback.

Warm regards,

We recently spent 2 weeks at the Intercontinental Resort to celebrate our Golden Wedding anniversary. We had a great time and were very well looked after, particularly on the actual anniversary day. Our room was excellent, with a superb view and was very well serviced by the hotel staff. The food was very good in the buffet restaurant with a good selection of dishes and with a different cuisine featured each night.

We had our anniversary dinner in the Veda Indian restaurant which was excellent - they even made us a cake!.

The staff were all friendly and helpful and, on the few occasions when service appeared slow, it was usually because the staff had to go to another part of the hotel to get what we wanted.

One thing to note is that, although the hotel web site states that the hotel currency is Euros, all our bills were in Rupees!

The Inter Continental, Mauritius, Resort, Balaclava Fort was the hotel which me and my wife had finally zeroed in for our honeymoon after rigorous research of various properties in Mauritius. We are glad to say that our efforts are 100 percent fruitful.

We stayed in the hotel in the 2nd week of Jan.13 for 1 week. The Hotel is a stunning 5 star property with a huge beautiful lobby with a superb sea view to soothe you from a hectic flight. But one thing I would just suggest management is to put fans in the lobbby as it becomes very hot in summers.

Room: After entering the room we realised that we were upgraded by the hotel to the Presidential Suite which is the best room in the Hotel. It was the biggest surprise as well as gift from the hotel to us on our honeymoon. It is uber luxury with open jacuzzi, bathtub, sundeck, terrace, living and bed room all sea facing.

Hotel: The hotel is very well maintained property with a pristine beach. It is situated in the northern part of the country around 15 min, drive to Port Louis. It has many activities for guests for free of cost. Only thing is you should book them prior day as many people are interested in enjoying those.

Food: Food is very good and every night at Senso restaurant they have a different cuisine spread like Lebanese, Indian, Mauritian on Friday etc. Room service menu should be expanded as there is very less choice in it. But little better food arrangements should be done for vegetarians , the reason I felt so as my wife prefers it and had some difficulty with the veg food served but this problem is there in other hotels also.

Spa: The Spa in the hotel is very good with very good masseurs and couples should exploit the offers that the hotel puts for them.

Staff: The hotel staff is very pleasant with always a smile on their face. Arun, Priya and Yashweer at the reception were very helpful . Sanjana and Dalida from guest relations gave us all the required info properly, clearing all our doubts. Infact, Arun and Sanjana were our guides in the hotel and we are very thankful to them for a comfortable stay.

Restaurants: Restaurants are the places to visit when you get bored with buffets at Senso. They are nice but they are very expensive and the quantity is also not great.
Veda : Serves Indian food.
Noble House: Asian fusion
Seagala: Mauritian and Sea food.
Senso: International Buffet

To summarise, it is a marvellous place for honeymooners and they can enjoy their privacy taking back wonderful memories.

Hotel- 5/5, Rooms-5/5, Location-4/5, Food – 4/5 .Overall 5/5

Room Tip: Presidential Suite for super luxury if you can afford or atleast jacuzzi rooms which provide good pr...

We went for our honeymoon at this location from 27th Jan-3rd Feb. Its atleast 1hour drive from the airport. It is advisable people take private transfer else the group bus will take minimum of 2.5hrs going through various hotels which was bit tiring.

Rooms
I will highly appreciate Neal at Guest Relations counter who was simply superb in offering us suggestions, advice, extremely helpful. Because of our IHG membership he was kind enough to get us upgraded from Deluxe Ocean View Terrace Room with Jaccuzi to the Presidential Suite.
The duplex room was extremely grande in every way, majestic view, 3 terrraces with jacuzzi outside and inside as well. Wifi in room was really helpful. Airconditioning could have been better but it may be because of high humidity at that time of year. Every morning our room attendant Nitin was very innovative creating beautiful designs at our bed with towels n flowers.

Restaurants
Hotel has nice restaurants such as Senso, Veda, Segala, Nobel House. Seno was simply superb in every way, large variety of food, good mix of different cusines. Segala was very crafty as well with decent food. Those who love indian will love to visit Veda. At Nobel House, we were surprised to see the behaviour of the Duty Manager when he commented to us that shorts are not allowed to be worn inside the restaurant. When he highlighted and pointed out that every French individual sitting at time was wearing the same, he became quiet. It will be better if there is any specific dress code then it should be advised at time of booking. The pool bar was quite good.
One very important thing which I like to highlight is that drinking water is NOT available free of cost. Only at breakfast surpisingly it was available free. So, travellers should either purchase large bottles from outside market and store in their room refrigerators or survive on 2 mini bottles which the hotel provides every day. The hotel can best install drinking water stations at various locations for convenience of people.

Swimming Pool and adjacent man made island, beach
Pool was of decent size, the man made island was nice for late evening walks. Beach was quite rocky but enough places to stretch on beach chairs.

Water sports at hotel
Due to cyclone alert and shortage of time, could not use any facility such as water ski etc.

Private Taxi
It is advisable to contact outside tour agent to provide you with taxis for the day as the ones from hotel were quite expensive.

Hotel shops
We had $120 voucher which we were allowed to use at ONLY 1 shop instead of others which were more better. At that one shop, the only items that we were allowed to buy were t-shirt, cap, handbag which were priced 3 times than normal price. Suprisingly the artistic boat which were priced less than $50 we were not allowed to buy that.
If the hotel is providing the voucher it should provide options to customer who can choose from a variety of things not restricting them to buy only those which are sold less/are in excess quantity.

Power adpater
Those who are coming from overseas should carry their own power adapters as the concierge does not have spare ones. Therefore we had to charge our camera, laptops and mobiles at reception.

Spa
We had received a 30min free back and shoulder massage. I was slightly dissapointed with the staff as they provided us with 20min of service as they had to go to other clients who had next appointments. It is preferred that bookings are made keeping 10min interval in beween which allows the staff to get some rest before the next client comes.

Gym
Nice view and staff was helpful

Overall, we like to extend your thanks to Neil at guest relations, Nitin at room cleaning, staff at reception and staff at pool bar for providing us water when in dire needs for making our experience special.

Dear DeeNan85,

Thank you very much for your lovely comments.
I am delighted to read that people like Neel & Nitin made your trip unique, authentic and enriching.
It sounds like you had time to explore the whole resort, its many facilities and restaurants despite the cyclonic alert that disrupted the beach activities and damaged our beach quite badly.

I take on board all your valuable feedback and will work with the team to improve where need be!

Warm regards and I look forward to welcoming you again soon!

Not a bad hotel although set far back from mian shops etc. Room was great, food was good, pool well did not get there after my son had an injury and required 7 stitches. This is when the poor customer service was noted! The Management tried to cover up, the grass & place where he fell and cut open his hand on broken glass was quickly cleared. We were left to go to a clinic in a taxi, manangement refused to pay...luckily had good travel insurance so all costa covered but we felt really let down by the customer service, especially when I could understand what the staff said in French! Not bad but really they did not care. Oh one thing which to date baffles me was the terrible smell from the towels on the one day and discovering a Napkin on the floor..looks like someone used the room to do their prayers and the towel STANK of BO!

Dear Shobna01,

First of all I would like to thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us.
I hope your son has recovered from his injury while staying with us.
I would like to extend our most sincere apologies if the team did not show empathy and did not provide assistance on the spot. I will make sure the whole team is briefed accordingly so that this type of situation does not reoccur in the future as we want to make sure our guests are safe and well looked after during their whole stay with us.
I am not sure I understand your comment regarding the towels as indeed they are cleaned by our laundry supplier and delivered freshed on a daily basis. I do not have an explanation for the bad smell of the towels on one specific day and it is extremely difficult for me today to track it down. However I will make sure I share your comments with our Housekeeping team so that they are aware and more vigilant.

I trust the whole family still enjoyed their time in Mauritius and hope your son is feeling better.
