Wanting a break from the chain restaurants while in Waterloo/Syracuse, we decided to stop in at Magee's at the recommendation of a coworker. We were glad we did. There's nothing pretentious about this spot - a cow-theme carried on throughout, servers dressed comfortably in jeans and t-shirts - and that was refreshing. A true All-American diner setting. The food, too, is unpretentious. And while some of it's just "okay" - the chicken-fried steak and the french onion soup come to mind - some of it is fantastic (the cornbread and prime rib dinners were favourites). While I was disappointed that the strawberry shortcake didn't feature fresh strawberries, the abundance of whipped cream and a totally fantastic biscuit that I'm still thinking about made up for it. Excellent value for the portions and lots to choose from.
Service was a little slow, but apologetic and friendly and so was easily forgiven. I'd give the place 3.5 stars but seeing as TripAdvisor doesn't allow 1/2 stars I'll give Magee's the benefit of the doubt and kick them up to 4. We'll be back the next time we're in town.
P.S. I'd mention that the place was very cold, even in the heat of late August and that was a little off-putting. Bring a jacket.
