“Ideal for familly holiday with kids”
Reviewed April 24, 2013

This is a really nice hotel where you've all you need on your holiday. Modern hotel with very huge family rooms, good food, nice location of the builidings spread all over the domain. Very good snorkling behind the reef ... if the wind allows you to. Nice sandy beach with (limited) snorkling possibility even when windy.

The first thing that has to be said about this hotel is how amazing the staff are. Every member of staff from the waiters, bar men, life guards, entertainment peeps and room cleaners were exceptionally helpful and could not have done more. Mohamed Hussein in the restaurant and Mohammed Ali (our room cleaner) need especial mention. The rooms were comfortable, clean and functional. The pools catered for everybody, the children especially enjoyed the slides and pools around them. The food was good quality and there was something for everyone, although the kids were a bit sick of pasta and pizza as they wouldn't try anything else. The hotel is in the middle of nowhere so this is a great place for a chill out holiday with lots of sunbathing, but there are lots of activities if you want to be more adventurous. The snorkeling is incredible and I would highly recommend it. We had an incredible 2 week holiday and would highly recommend it to anyone.

On arrival at the Akassia Club Calimera at the beginning of April,we (partner and children 11+7) were escorted to our room, which was in block 14. This worked out to be a great spot, as we were on the ground floor, although virtually all blocks are only 2 storey anyway, but we were 20 yards from the beach and beach bar, with a sea view. The rooms were of decent quality and cleaned daily and our cleaner mohammed was always helpful.

The water park, which is the the other side of the complex was superb for children and adults and we spent many hours on the multitude of slides. You also get a good workout climbing all the stairs to get upto the slides and all the slides have life guards at the top, to make sure everyone goes down correctly, thus avoiding accidents.

The complex has approx 12 pools, with some being heated, some being quiet, some wave pools. Basically you can find a place that suits all tastes and needs and I will even add, that some of the quieter pools by the Akassia beach hotel have ramps, so are suitable for wheelchairs getting in and out of the pool.

The beach is cleaned daily and there is a nice football pitch size area for swimming and snorkeling and you can see colourful fish, rays, eels etc. This area is surrounded by reef, which you can't go on, but you can access the bigger reef wall by the piers at either end of the beech. Snorkelling off the piers is fantastic, as long as the sea is fairly calm and there is a huge range of fish and rays etc and occasional dolphin if your lucky.

Now, down to the food! I have read loads of reviews that slate the food at the Akassia, but the problem is, that First Choice have only just started taking the British to this hotel, so they don't provide the usual British staples of bacon, good old bangers, beans, chicken nuggets etc. This will take time, as the hotel has lots of German, Italian, French and Belgium visitors, so food tends to be catered for their needs, with various meats, breads, cheeses and pastries for breakfast and a lot of the meats for dinner being on the bone, which us Brits don't always like. I have to say, that I always found something to eat, which was fairly nice, but children did struggle and tended to live off pasta, pizza, chips, pancakes and doughnuts, topped up with ice cream between 3pm-6pm.

I normally have a problem with All Inclusive, as you tend to eat in the same place all the time, but the Akassia has changed this. The complex is so big, they have broken the menotany by having breakfast in the indoor restaurant, lunch in the beach restaurant on top of the cliff overlooking the reef/sea, dinner by the main pool and snacks in the lobby or beach bars. Then there is also the fish restaurant and the panorama restaurant, which is egyptian/italian where you could eat once during your stay.

Basically I think this hotel is a great all inclusive complex and is brilliantly set out.

I would definitely recommend the Dolphin House trip with First Choice, which takes you on a full day boat trip to a horse shoe shape reef in a national park, where dolphins tend to stay for part of the day and play. The boats are only allowed to a certain point, so as not to disturb the dolphins, but you can snorkel a little closer and hope they come out to play with you!! We had approx. 30 dolphins swimming around us, which was extra special. You then have lunch before snorkelling in another part of the reef, which was also superb with an abundance of colourful fish and rays.

We also did the Marsa Ambarak half day turtle trip, which also goes to a protected national park area, where there are huge turtles swimming approx 50 yards off the beach. We swam with 6 turtles, which were swimming along side us with cleaner fish on there backs. Another memorable experience.

Room Tip: If you want a sea view near the beach, ask for block 14 or 15, which is next to the beach, beach bar...

Myself and 9 year old went to the Akassia in early April for a week, chosing it for the water park the , snorkelling and the food. We booked a sea view room which was an excellent upgrade.
Food ... a miss and a hit. The akkassia resteraunts were awful, dead atmosphere, adhoc service on drinks, , and food that was cooked and left in luke warm trays. Even food which was supposed to be cooked fresh was generally cooked up front and left luke warm. After two days my daughter (who likes good food) was fed up. I talked to another guest who mentioned the food at the sister hotel which we could use a total transformation and saved the holiday. Restuarant near the water park was good for lunch (6/10)
Room... great a hit, clean comfortable with a sea view, bathroom small, but enough for our needs.Had to switch the fridge off at night as it rattled and kept us awake (8/10)
Service ... hits and miss... a couple of lovely friendly bar staff at the water park and beach front bar but a bit hit and miss from the rest at some times very friendly and helpful, and on some others bored and disinterested. (7/10)
Snorkelling generally good but very influenced by the weather.. weather windy on and off and red flags 3/7 days . the free bus went to the local bay at 12.30 and was overcrowded as a replacement. Best treat was a trip to Ambarak bay where we saw 7 turtles. house reef on the calm days was very good, but suprisingly on a peak period the closed one of the piers for renovation. (7/10).
Water park, brilliant success, in general the staff were helpful and hot on safety. (10/10).
Pools lots of them 8/10.
Some grumbles ... you have to pay for bottled water !!... the shops are more expensive than the airport... you get hassled to get hair braided... have a massage every day at the water park. I had the worst bout of Egyptian Belly I have ever had, which floored me for 2 days. The staff in the water park would also start to clean the edges of pools whilst you were still using it with a strong smelling cleaner !!
Overall, I would have loved to have given the hotel a very good tick as the combination of a great water park and great snorkelling should have been enough but I was very grateful that we only booked a week as the food was not good enough to stay for two even at the better hotel...there was simply not enough variety to last 14 days.

Room Tip: sea view was well worth it and vital if you are going to stay in the really hot periods

Spent a week in April at the Akassia with 2 children (10 and 8). The water park was really well managed, with lots of slides. There are also other more quieter pools if you want some peace. I found nearly all the staff to be welcoming and helpful. The food I would give a 7 / 10 on the grounds that it is an all inclusive and buffet style - so I would not compare the quality of the food to say an a la carte restaurant. That said , there was a lot of variety in the food offered and the quality good. I found the level of service in the restaurant varied. Sometimes the waiters would be keen to get our drinks and sometimes we had to get our own from the soda / beer / wine taps (which I don't mind at all). The house reef was great for snorkelling. On days when it was too windy, the hotel ran a free bus to another more sheltered reef. We had a family room, really lovely, large, clean, the bath was tiny though, just for showering really. We had a really great time and would definitely come back.

Had a great holiday here about 3 years ago and forgot to review. The staff was excellent-everyone treated us well and especially spoiled our son who was then 7; he had a marvellous time and enjoyed the ice cream and pizzas! We really enjoyed the outdoor entertainment area by the pool-it was lovely to get a table and spend the evening in the balmy night air. Very good food (indeed) and expecially enjoyed dinner al fresco-loads of choice and the puddings were amazing. Thanks Akassia Swiss for an excellent intro to Egypt.

We travelled in February for one weeks all inclusive with 3 children. The room they gave us was excellent and i wish you could ifind these in the UK. First room with 3 beds in for children then corridor to second room with double bed. Off the corridor were 2 bathrooms. (Gave a couple of decent tips at the beginning of the week and Tea / coffee making facilities arrived - nice of them). The food was very good but not excellent. There is a huge choice and every night there are Pizza's or pastas that can be made and different themed nights. Its worth going early to eat after everything is freshly prepared. The staff are first class with service and again a few early tips will get you a better deal and better attention throughout. Our Kids aged 5 - 9 loved the whole trip and the freedom the resort gave them. Could not swim in the Olympic pool because it was freezing - The sea was much warmer.. Id say it would be warmed up in summer heat. There were 2 heated pools anyhow. Temp was mid 20's but windy every day. Would recommend to families with young children.
