“Rooms & restaurant staff exceeded expectations but front desk staff, not so much.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 5, 2010

We were in Utica for the First Lego League competition at SUNY IT, traveling with my husband, 12 year old son and 9 year old daughter. The hotel is nicely decorated inside, both the lobby and the rooms. We found it to be very clean, and up to date. Convenient well-lit parking garage attached, and $7 per day parking was a bargain.

Checking in was odd. Both young women working the front desk were not very welcoming, or very friendly. Not outright rude, but honestly I think a computer kiosk would have been less off-putting. Bad eye contact, borderline snippy attitude where there was really nothing unusual going on - just a simple business transaction, but with bonus coldness. Friends of ours who were attending the same event and staying at the Radisson had much worse interactions. They were told that hotel guests would get a 20% restaurant discount, but found it wasn't applied, and when they pointed it out were very rudely dismissed by yet a different front desk staffer. Our friends did complain to management, and were credited with the 20% off afterwards. For some reason, my husband and I were not offered the same incentive upon check in.

We elected to try the dinner buffet, and were really impressed. The food was delicious, very fresh, very well done - there was so much variety, and everything was top notch. While it's not inexpensive for a family, it was definitely worth every penny. Our server, Jamie, was wonderful. Polite, friendly without being intrusive, and super helpful in providing info on the hotel and local area. He really seemed to go out of his way to make us comfortable and happy, what a great experience. We also found the pasta station chef to be terrific - a great cook as well as a fun and friendly person. He went out of his way to be kind to my very shy daughter, and my husband and I enjoyed meeting him. Worth it even without a discount.

I noted before our trip that one reviewer found her restaurant visit to be diminished by the wait staff, which gave her the impression that they had issues serving a woman of color. We've experienced similar issues with service in many other capacities too, as my husband is black and I am white, which can still be a problem for some people. However, on our visit December 3, 2010, we found that there was nothing even remotely off-putting with the restaurant staff, and as I mentioned, we felt they went truly beyond what would be expected - not to mention we noted many restaurant staffers (including the pasta station chef) were also people of color. An altogether excellent experience.

We had two rooms, double-doubles with an adjoining door. As in the pictures, they are tastefully decorated, carpets and linens are all up to date. Surprise bonus was a small fridge and microwave in each room! The sleep number beds took some getting used to. Three of the four beds in our rooms worked with no problem, but one was a bit inconsistent - if we'd had more time, I would have called down to the front desk to get help, but given our schedule, and the less than warm reception upon checking in, I decided to just deal with it.

The kids went swimming in the pool while I tried out the hot tub. It was a great experience all around, the pool is spacious and the hot tub was just the right temperature, all very clean and well maintained. My husband did a workout (after all that great food, he felt obligated :-)), and said that the fitness center was very good and far exceeded most hotel gyms in his experience.

We'll be visiting Utica again in January, I think on balance it's worth staying at the Radisson. I'll be sure to add another review after that trip.

Have stayed at this hotel several times over the years. It is a decent place I aiways try to get free buffet or 2 out of them at the restaurant. The rooms are OK but those sleep number beds really suck. The pool and gym are good , the location to the thruway is perfect. You have to pay to park in the garage though.

We were forced to stay at this radisson in Utica on a busy night in the town last night because all other hotels were booked. We had gotten the discount coupon for $109 for the hotel but ended up paying $137+tax because there was a staggered rate for each extra person even though the coupon said "1-4 people". We got over the coupon thing and just wanted to relax in our room and go to sleep. From first glance, the room was very clean and inviting, but it was all downhill from there. The hotel had touted their sleep number beds as one of their key amentaties. It turned out that sleep number beds are very annoying and the ones at this hotel didn't function properly. I ended up sleeping in a caved in mattress because the firmness adjuster was screwy. The bathroom was small and outdated. The faucet on the shower sprayed water everywhere and emitted rust when first turned on, it also didn't properly drain. The bathroom door barely opened and was one of those that took forever to shut. The glasses in the room had lipstick on them from a previous guest. The furniture was beat up and outdated. The room was illuminated during the night because the door had so much light coming in from the hallway making it very difficult to sleep. Just an overall disappointing stay for the price here in Utica last night. I recommend to go elsewhere if at all possible.

We stayed at the Radisson one night while on our way out to the east coast. It is a nice hotel; clean and quiet. We liked that secure parking in a garage off the street was provided as we had a lot packed in the car; parking was included in hotel cost. This was a plus for us. Elevators are secure as well as need a hotel key to operate. The room was clean and comfortable; free Wifi was a plus. The kids enjoyed the pool, which was larger and clean. We did not eat at the hotel restaurant, but ordered pizza at a local joint (PIzza Classic, I believe) that was just up the street (husband walked to pick up) - it was good (and considerably cheaper than ordering from hotel room service...) Only downside was that in plugging in something in outlet behind bed, was pretty dusty. Needs to be thoroughly cleaned behinds beds.

Stayed on the way to Old Forge.
Very accomodating staff who placed us on a quiet floor and a corner room away from the elevators. Didn't hear a sound all night. Clean and comfortable. Don't suggest venturing the area around the hotel at night though. Had a coupon so price was reasonable. Parking was 7$.

This was a great hotel and a fun little city to spend a short time in. Their local restaurant's are excellent. I enjoyed Chicken Riggies (local specialty) at The Secret Garden on Culver Ave and they were absolutely delicious! We also had Dinner at Carmellas where our children ate at no charge because it was Sunday and they make their own pasta right there! The Turning Stone Casino was only a 20 minute drive away using the thruway. They have plenty of paved walking trails in the area (I recommend the Marcy trail off of River Rd. it is along the canal and has raspberry bushes along the walk. Golfed at Valley View Golf Course and it was excellent. Roads are somewhat confusing the way they are set up and a lack of signs made it a little frustrating so make sure you have a GPS for this place.
