We were in Utica for the First Lego League competition at SUNY IT, traveling with my husband, 12 year old son and 9 year old daughter. The hotel is nicely decorated inside, both the lobby and the rooms. We found it to be very clean, and up to date. Convenient well-lit parking garage attached, and $7 per day parking was a bargain.
Checking in was odd. Both young women working the front desk were not very welcoming, or very friendly. Not outright rude, but honestly I think a computer kiosk would have been less off-putting. Bad eye contact, borderline snippy attitude where there was really nothing unusual going on - just a simple business transaction, but with bonus coldness. Friends of ours who were attending the same event and staying at the Radisson had much worse interactions. They were told that hotel guests would get a 20% restaurant discount, but found it wasn't applied, and when they pointed it out were very rudely dismissed by yet a different front desk staffer. Our friends did complain to management, and were credited with the 20% off afterwards. For some reason, my husband and I were not offered the same incentive upon check in.
We elected to try the dinner buffet, and were really impressed. The food was delicious, very fresh, very well done - there was so much variety, and everything was top notch. While it's not inexpensive for a family, it was definitely worth every penny. Our server, Jamie, was wonderful. Polite, friendly without being intrusive, and super helpful in providing info on the hotel and local area. He really seemed to go out of his way to make us comfortable and happy, what a great experience. We also found the pasta station chef to be terrific - a great cook as well as a fun and friendly person. He went out of his way to be kind to my very shy daughter, and my husband and I enjoyed meeting him. Worth it even without a discount.
I noted before our trip that one reviewer found her restaurant visit to be diminished by the wait staff, which gave her the impression that they had issues serving a woman of color. We've experienced similar issues with service in many other capacities too, as my husband is black and I am white, which can still be a problem for some people. However, on our visit December 3, 2010, we found that there was nothing even remotely off-putting with the restaurant staff, and as I mentioned, we felt they went truly beyond what would be expected - not to mention we noted many restaurant staffers (including the pasta station chef) were also people of color. An altogether excellent experience.
We had two rooms, double-doubles with an adjoining door. As in the pictures, they are tastefully decorated, carpets and linens are all up to date. Surprise bonus was a small fridge and microwave in each room! The sleep number beds took some getting used to. Three of the four beds in our rooms worked with no problem, but one was a bit inconsistent - if we'd had more time, I would have called down to the front desk to get help, but given our schedule, and the less than warm reception upon checking in, I decided to just deal with it.
The kids went swimming in the pool while I tried out the hot tub. It was a great experience all around, the pool is spacious and the hot tub was just the right temperature, all very clean and well maintained. My husband did a workout (after all that great food, he felt obligated :-)), and said that the fitness center was very good and far exceeded most hotel gyms in his experience.
We'll be visiting Utica again in January, I think on balance it's worth staying at the Radisson. I'll be sure to add another review after that trip.
