“Fine Stop on NY Thruway”
Reviewed May 2, 2013

We chose this hotel based on location on our drive eastward along the Thruway. We found a good rate in the highway coupon booklet at a rest stop and were impressed that the hotel would honor the advertised rate. We found the hotel to be so well taken care of that it's our assumption that it's quite new. Everything was clean, convenient and comfortable.the room was adequately large, bath well supplied and bed very comfortable. Staff, both evening and morning folks, were very polite, helpful and congenial. The fitness facility had two treadmills, so my husband and I would work out together. (Though they were lower quality hotel style treadmills, to be sure) The breakfast offerings were varied and fresh, with not one but two egg preparations as well as pastries, pancakes from a machine, and cold offerings. If we were to come this way again, this hotel would definitely suit our taste.

We were driving to JFK from southwestern Ontario for our flight to Miami in March 2013. Our plan had been to drive halfway on Thursday night, stop en route, and complete the trip on Friday morning to catch our afternoon flight. No hotel had been booked for the Thursday overnight, and as fatigue set in late in the evening we were happy to get off the interstate at Utica and pleased that there was a Holiday Inn Express as I am a Priority Club member. We arrived around 10:30pm and were greeted by Mark Webb, the guest services rep on overnight duty. Mark was awesome! He was courteous and professional with an added quality of being very personable and friendly. He had just popped some cinnamon buns in the oven and they were a welcome treat following several hours of driving. It was a great reception for a tired family of four. I saw Mark at 5am the next morning, busily preparing guest receipt documents in the dining room. We chatted a bit and it was remarkable that even coming to the end of his shift he still exhibited a tremendous level of energy and enthusiasm along with a genuine concern for our family's well being. The kicker was the personal note he put on the guest receipts, with reminders about the roads being slick and a gentle nudge to the warm cinnamon rolls waiting in the breakfast area.

Mark's attention to detail, his personal touch and the level of joy he displayed in his job were the key reasons that we decided to stay at the Utica Holiday Inn Express on our return drive a week later. Although the night was clear and great for driving, delays in getting out of Miami and JFK had us several hours off plan, so we decided early on to stay overnight and decided it would at Mark's hotel. Mark delivered the same exemplary greeting when we pulled in and we were made to feel at home.

Thanks to Mark Webb for making the least appealing aspect of our trip (that being the drive from Ontario to JFK and back) one of the best memories. His attention to the customer and his consistency in delivering service and demonstrating joy in doing his job are highly commendable. The Utica Holiday Inn Express is lucky to have Mark as one of their ambassadors!

We stayed here for 3 nights while visiting our daughter at a local college. While it was a bit further away than the Holiday Inn in New Hartford where we'd stayed before, we decided to try it. This hotel is very new and all common areas were spotless. Our room seemed like we were the first to stay in it. The staff were very helpful and the workers at the continental breakfast (good but typical fare) were consistently friendly and welcoming. Our room was on the 2nd floor over the pool and things got loud when a bunch of young guests went swimming, so soundproofing needs some work. But overall this is a safe, clean, economical place to stay when in the Utica area.

Room Tip: Pick away from the pool due to sound issues

Mark was so accomodating as were the other members of the staff. We stayed during a Hockey Tournament and there were alot of families there. It was a tough crowd to manage because I am sure there was excess noise associated with the kids, but Mark and his staff were helpful and cheery. They allowed us to eat as a team and use the function room to socialize. it was a fun stay for all of us. We will be back next year.

Room Tip: It is a new property so the rooms are clean and modern. They have a nice small pool and a small wor...

This is a new hotel. Nice and clean. We stay on the second floor in the middle of the hotel. We asked for a room in the quiet area of the hotel. This hotel must have been built with thin walls to save money. You can hear everything. Worst hotel i ever stayed in for noise. I understand there was a hockey tournament in Utica an the hotel was full of children. We heard for hours kids run up and down the hallways and slamming doors. We called the front desk and complained at 11:30 PM. Someone did come up and tell the kids to be quiet. I heard that too! I don't know where the parents were all this time. Just know consideration. So around 12:30AM, things did quiet down. The breakfast was ok. Need to clean tables. Keep forks and food from running out.

Room Tip: Get a room on third floor at the end of hallway. Kids jumping on third floor sounded like they were...

Dear GA,
I do apologize for your poor night's sleep this past weekend. I even put on extra staff to attempt to mitigate the noise from the children, but you were still disurbed so we did not do enough. Please email me directly and I would be happy to attempt to compensate you for your stay with us. It's always a challenge to keep everyone happy when there are groups in house but we will work to learn from this experience and handle any teams better in the future.

Mark and Anna really went beyond their duty & made our stay wonderful from the start. The beds were comfortable and the rooms were clean. This was our first stay at the Holiday Inn & we plan to come back. Karen was also very helpful at breakfast.

We came to the Utica area this past President's Day weekend from Baltimore to enjoy some winter sports with my (3) year old son.

It was so nice to receive a warm welcome from Mark at the Front Desk at 2A after an anticipated six hour drive which turned into an eight hour drive due to snow in NE Pennsylvania. He quickly checked us in and even warmed up a few cinnamon buns for a late night snack.

Our room was exceptionally clean and the beds very comfortable. We had a suite with (2) beds which was more than enough space for (3) people. It was nice to have a microwave and refrigerator in our room as a grocery store (Price Choppers) is less than a mile away. The shower consistently had hot water and a great flow. The heating system was in fine working order. My son enjoyed the pool though I thought the water to be a bit cool. The workout facilities had (3) treadmills and an elliptical machine.

Breakfast had a variety of options to choose from (eggs, pancakes, oatmeal, other cereal, pastries and bagels) and was tasty. It would have been nice to have some fresh fruit such as bananas, oranges and apples. Karen and Edna, the breakfast staff, were friendly and helpful. We enjoyed our morning conversations with them.

The noise level was our only major criticism, but this has more to do with the construction of the hotel and the fact that Honey Boo Boo’s family was in the room next to ours with their out of control infants/toddlers. We are fairly tolerant of little kids, given we have one of our own, but this was over the top with yelling and cursing. The thin walls didn’t help the situation. The Front Desk did offer to move us, but we didn’t feel like packing up our stuff on our final night.

The location was convenient to all of our activities which included the Children’s Museum of History, Science & Technology, Taberg Tower Snow Tubing, Ice Skating at the New Hartford Recreation Center, and Osceola Tug Hill Cross Country Ski Center. We found many good buys at Herb Philipson’s Outfitters in New Hartford. We had pizza from O’Scugnizzo’s in Utica (fair) and Mexican food from Burrito Blues in New Hartford (good).

Overall, the place had the feel of a bed and breakfast despite being a major chain hotel. We definitely recommend this hotel for anyone coming to cross country ski at Tug Hill or BREIA.

Room Tip: Asking for a 3rd floor room may help with the noise issue
