I travelled upto Old Forge on the Scenic Railroad last september. The colours were very pretty and it was well worth the trip to see the view.
It took about a couple of hours to ride the train then we had a good amount of time in Old Forge itself. Its a beautifull part of the USA and I guess it gets overlooked by tourists from abroad as New England is the famous, autum trip to see the colours.
The railroad is a very good way to view them if you are limited for time. The train itself is not in great condition. It is old and has seen better days, but it is perfectly adequate and comfortable. There is a buffet car, which is very reasonable if limited. There are plenty of places to eat in Old Forge so that isnt a problem.
You are provided with some info about what you are passing along the way and I did enjoy the ride very much. The staff, maybe there are a few volunteers amongst them are very helpfull and have local knowlage to pass on to anyone who asks and is interested.
If you just want to sit and enjoy the view that is fine.
I only did the ride to see the colours but they do quite a few different type of trips, from christmas ones with children in mind to 'grow up themed nights where the beer and wine flows'. i would imagine they could be very enjoyable nights out with a small party of friends.
As the carridge wasnt in the best of shape its difficult to give it more than 4 out of 5, but I guess untill they have made some money the money to give the cars a refurbishment isnt there.
Worth going on and I will go on it again when I am next in Utica in september.
