Stayed here two nights with family, for college visit. Room was a little tight, but otherwise fine. Easy to haul luggage in, through back entrance directly into elevators. Walking distance to old town Troy, where you will find very nice bookstores and eateries. Short driving distance to Rensselaer. Continental breakfast has mainly items in plastic bags (Sara Lee muffins, bagels, etc.) with a toaster that makes the bagels very edible. WiFi worked in the room when we arrived, but not early the next morning -- worked fine in the dining area. Television is always on in the dining/sitting area, which may or may not appeal to everyone.

My wife and I attended a wedding across the street from this hotel and stayed for two nights due to the convenient location. I must say that this was the worst experience that I have ever had at a hotel. The room we were given was on the second floor and was extremely outdated (old beds, old appliances, etc.) The drywall around the air conditioning unit was wet and rotting. The television had a horrible picture and there was no way to adjust it.

On the first day the maintenance man was cutting something with a circular saw in the maintenance room, which is also on the second floor and it was extremely loud. The hotel made no attempt to give us warning or explain the noise.

The maid service did not show up to clean our room until 2:20pm, when we were getting ready for the wedding. When we asked if they could come back the maid replied that she was only there until 2:30pm, insinuating that it was either now or never. (my wife was in the shower) When we called the front desk for more information, the woman in charge of maid service was extremely rude and said there was nothing she could do.

Overall I was disgusted with both the amenities and the service. I strongly recommend travelers to look elsewhere when in the Albany/Troy area.

I couldn't help but wonder if the Franklin Square Inn & Suites is renovating its property one floor at a time. The lobby is quite nice -- spacious, with a HDTV flat screen on the wall and internet terminals for guest use. In the mornings there's quite a respectable continental breakfast with coffee/tea/juice plus various sweet breads, bagels and yogurt. Many more expensive hotels aren't as hospitable with their morning coffee service.

The motel also has two sets of washers and driers for guests who need them or who are staying longer term. The hallways on the first floor show signs of a very nice and recent remodel: fresh paint, fairly new carpet, bright lighting and no off smells.

It's when you get to the other floors that it appears the remodeling isn't complete yet. I was on the third floor, which was redolent with the smell of a couple decades of smoke, spilled food, and general funk. New paint and carpet would be a big improvement. My room also reeked of some sort of artificial strawberry scent, although it did not smell of smoke.

The air system in the room consisted of one of those wall units below the window which are ubiquitous in motels and less expensive hotels. It was slightly noisy with the fan on, but the system seemed well maintained and it didn't rattle, which I've experienced elsewhere and can be very annoying. The bathroom, however, could have used an exhaust fan to prevent the mirror from steaming up.

The room had no iron & board. I had to request one from the front desk and was provided an iron and a tabletop board with three-inch legs -- not the easiest thing to use for pressing my suit for my business meeting the next day. I neglected to notice a scorch mark on the iron and managed to stain the white shirt I was pressing. I share responsibility for not checking and testing a motel-provided iron, but a better establishment would have also caught this before handing it out. Also, a dorm-sized mini-fridge would have been nice in the room, too.

On the plus side, the rooms have free wireless internet connections.

The motel is strategically located. It's close to Rensselaer and several smaller colleges and it's within walking distance of some nice restaurants, one of which delivers to the adjacent motel (psuedo-room service?) for orders over $10. This key location would allow me to consider staying here again but I would negotiate with the reservation staff about the room's amenities and ask to inspect it first since not all rooms seem to be equal at the Franklin Square Inn & Suites.

There are not a lot of options if you want a hotel room in Troy, New York. Normally, visitors end up staying in a nearby town. This time, I was lucky enough to stay at the Franklin Square Inn & Suites. Located in downtown Troy, NY between Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Russell Sage College, and close to Emma Willard School, the Franklin Square Inn is a comfortable, nicely appointed hotel offering a wonderful choice for business travelers and parents with children attending school here.

We enjoyed our suite which was beautifully decorated, included a king size bed, whirlpool tub, sofa bed, desk and mini fridge. We made use of the free wireless internet connection in our room and also the computers (with attached printers) that were set up on roomy desks and available for all in the lobby.

The lobby was one of the nicest I've experienced. It was comfortable, inviting, bright and cheerful. With plenty of free newspapers on hand, two fireplaces and wall-mounted flat-screen TV, big comfy couches, and tables, the computer desks and more. I spent several hours reading and enjoying the complimentary coffee and juice available all day. (There's also a complimentary continental breakfast that I had planned to take advantage of but never did.)

The staff were all very accommodating and friendly. The room was kept clean and well-supplied with towels and toiletries. We especially appreciated the abundance of towels and extra pillows waiting for us (without having to ask for them). A wall-mounted hair dryer and shaving mirror were included at the vanity, and iron and ironing board were in the closet.

Franklin Square Inn & Suites is connected to Franklin Plaza Ballroom so they are especially tuned to guests staying for special events. We were just there for the holiday and not part of a larger party. Yet we were treated wonderfully.

We will definitely stay again.

The Franklin Square Inn and Suites is a consistenly pleasant place to stay in Troy NY. I've stayed there twice in the past year. The rooms are simple without many frills but very clean and inviting without that 'hotel odor' one finds at some other places. There is a free high speed internet access available as well as cable TV including HBO.
Aside from that , one has to love the friendly and helpful staff. They are available 24/7 for assistance. They know exactly how to take care of their guests whether it be giving directions to an all night pharmacy or recommending a restaurant.
My suggestions for improving this hotel would include having small refrigerators in the room and perhaps an ice machine on each floor rather than just the one they have presently in the lobby.
I would not hesitate to stay at the Franklin Square Inn and Suites in the future and most certainly will.

convenient...within walking distance to the Historic Hudson River and Downtown Troy. Close to the River Street Cafe, which is rated one of the best restaurants in Troy. Friendly and courteous staff. However, hotel reservation is by phone only.
