You cannot believe how much water flows in Iceland. This waterfall cascades hundreds of feet down the volcanic cliffs. It is quite a tourist attraction.

I think we saw at least 80 waterfalls while driving around the West Fjords and while each had it's own beauty this one is really exceptional. The whole falls are so huge that they are easily seen from the parking area but the hike up is definitely worth it. The lower part can be a bit buggy when it's warmer (we lucked out with a lovely sunny, warm day) but there weren't bugs at the upper falls. Stopping here for a couple hours was a very relaxing segue while driving from Breiðavík to Ísafjörður.

Staying in Heydalur for a few nights, we embarked on a day trip up the coast to Ísafjörður and beyond to Dynjandi, one of Iceland's most spectacular waterfalls.

The trip takes a whole day. It provides varied scenery from driving along the fjords, driving up in the mountains overlooking the fjords, or plain driving in the mountains and through green valleys.

The drive itself can be a bit scary, depending on the weather. We had some fog, and even snow, at the highest elevations. Combined with the all-uniquitous wind, it can be challenging at times. After getting through the tunnel near Ísafjörður, the road became quite muddy and a bit treacherous. Nothing we couldn't handle, though.

All along the drive, the scenery is simply spectacular and very powerful. You'll get to see seals, perhaps even a whale, and lots of far-away mountain scenery. At Dynjandi, we enjoyed a short hike up the waterfall and a picnic to prepare us for the drive back.

There is nothing more relaxing than jumping into a hot pot after such a day and a good dinner. See my review on Heydalur if you are looking for a nice place to stay in the West Fjords.

This is definitely the highlight on the scenic gravel road from Patreksfjordur to Thingeyri. Views are amazing - well worth a stop. You can camp there too, public toilets and picnic area are also catered for.
