Reviewed May 17, 2014

Stayed for business, nice room normal size, great restaurant on site. Breakfast was excellent and much better than expected. Hotel is large. I did not see the pool or the gym but both were nice to have if I had time. would stay again for either business or pleasure.

Stayed at the Tarrytown House again--what can I say but this is the best lodging in the entire Tarrytown area. This facility beats any other chain or otherwise hands down. You start with a friendly, knowledgeable staff, enter into a spectacular lobby with the view of a garden no matter where you look, then you go to your room, which is always clean, always smells fresh and always has everything necessary for a great trip. The experience ends with a perfect night's sleep, a fresh cup of coffee either in your room or in the lobby, and probably the easiest check out anywhere.. What a place. I'm glad i found it and I've now stayed there exclusively my last 6 trips to the area.

Room Tip: If you are in a Putnam room, you can park near the exit and have entrance to the rooms right near yo...

Loved our stay here. Lovely grounds. Nice room. Absolutely excellent staff. Even the G M took time out of his busy day to talk with us. The night desk reception was incredibly good attentive to our every need and anticipating what we needed. This hotel also offers special rates now and then so watch for those. Makes a great stay even sweeter!

Our literary society hosted a terrifically successful 3-day conference here in late March. All 60 participants gave Tarrytown House rave reviews – quite a feat for such a large group.

Check-in was quick, and complimentary coffee in the Lobby is a nice, welcoming touch for travelers. The staff’s warm, personal greeting set the tone for our entire stay. Sean Collins at Reception provided impeccable assistance with polish and a smile.

Whether you visit as part of a conference or simply on your own as a hotel guest, you’ll find that the entire staff is trained to a high standard. They go out of their way to ensure a memorable stay. The breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets in the Biddle Mansion’s restaurant were excellent, with a generous number of well-prepared, tasty choices, attentive service, and expansive views of the lovely grounds. Lunch and dinner selections changed daily, and we looked forward to each meal. Special diets were accommodated with advance notice.

The Cellar 49 tavern won kudos for its warm ambience, comfy leather chairs, quality wine assortment (including local Long Island wines), and a good variety on the menu, from nibbles to substantial fare.

Guest rooms are spacious, comfortable, well appointed and thoughtfully furnished. My husband was really happy to have a big desk and ergonomic chair. Our king-bed room had a view of the Hudson River. When we had a problem with the TV (our fault, not theirs) and called the front desk at 10pm, the engineer arrived within minutes to adjust it.

Although the grounds weren’t in bloom yet in March, this is a beautifully landscaped property, with gentle paths for strolling about. The indoor pool and fitness center are clean and well equipped. The outdoor pool and tennis courts look promising. There are locker rooms and showers, and you can pre-book massage treatments.

Towns along the Hudson are filled with history. We toured Washington Irving’s home, Sunnyside (built in 1835), just across the road and well worth the visit. Also nearby are Lyndhurst, Kykuit, Philipsburg Manor, The Old Dutch Church. A visit to these properties is a nice complement to your stay in the area.

In fact, just walking into the Biddle Mansion takes you back to another, very gracious, time. If you browse the ‘About Us’ section of their website, you’ll see that the estate has quite a history in its own right. As you enter the property and drive up the leafy, winding road, you can feel the outside world falling away.

Another plus: Tarrytown House is easy to reach, just a mile from the NY State Thruway. Most of our group came from the NYC area and were happy with the quick trip, whether by car or train. (Tip: if you take the train, sit on the “river” side for unobstructed views of the Hudson.)

Although our visit was for a conference, my husband and I plan to return to Tarrytown House for a couple of days this summer to enjoy the property and facilities and explore the quaint riverside town.

This place was great. It was really nice to wake up in such a beautiful location. The room itself was great and the bed and sheets were out of this world. I slept great. I would have liked the staff to be a little more present. The place felt empty, possibly because it's so big. It would have been nice for someone to offer to hold a door for us or to ask us if we needed anything.

My rating would be more like a 5 if it wasn't for the layout/building of the hotel. Most hotels are built up but this is 4 different buildings. So depending which building you stay and can be a walk if you want to get breakfast or go to the exercise area.
However, everything else is great. The best breakfast. They have everything from fruit to bagels to an omelette station to waffles.
The exercise area is nice as well. It has a racquet ball court, 4-5 treadmills, a bunch of weight lifting equipment.

Green Features: They don't have recycle bins to throw away your plastic bottles.

Dear Josh W:

Thank you so much for not only being our guest but taking the time to share your kind and thoughtful feedback with our fans on Trip Advisor.

I am so glad you enjoyed our personal approach to service and I know our dedicated breakfast team works hard to ensure we have an elegant, unique and wonderful array of food each morning.

Our property is certainly not a "Normal" hotel as the Estate is comprised of 12 distinct buildings spanning 174 years and 26 acres. Navigating although beautiful can certainly be an "adventure" and for those guests with mobility challenges we do have a select few rooms just off the lobby to avoid all of the garden pathways and stairs.

For those looking for a chain hotel experience we purposely will not suit those needs but for those looking for a touch of history, elegance and a wide array of amenities all in this unique and historic Duke Estate, we are confident that this 174 year old property will not disappoint.

Excellent location, great property with flowering trees, little fountains and wrought iron gates. Cons: poly sheets and thin doors that do not block sound at all. $25 buys you a just ok breakfast, NOT like in the picture. Pros: salt water pool, sauna, large rooms, lots of walking trails, very clean property, good quality shampoo/conditioner/lotion. Dining rooms have great view and a terrace with fire pit. Easy to get to highway, diner and a large grocery store if traveling on budget. Will definitely return for convenience, resort-like feel and a relaxing pool at the end of the day!
