“First choice hotel in Syracuse”
Reviewed July 8, 2012

Genesee Grande Hotel is very well managed; rooms are nice and clean and hotel has above average fitness center. Ask for a room with the extra "office' room to the side of the bedroom. The added space with a desk is handy for overflow luggage and a separate work space area.

Syracuse is not a late-night town, nor are many restaurants open on Sunday, so we had an unexpected occasion to try the hotel restaurant. It was much better than expected and very welcome when we found ourselves famished at 10 PM, after a long day on the road.

Free parking in on-site outdoor lot.

The hotel itself is an older building though the main areas and dining facilities have been upgraded. The rooms too are updated and nicely furnished. There are two sections of the hotel - with the smaller rooms on two floors in the same building as the lobby - and the larger nicer rooms located in the section (building) across from the lobby side. The real plus to this hotel is the staff - very outgoing and friendly. The hotel is close to the University (Syracuse) and can be booked solid on sports weekends and major campus events. So plan ahead.
Workout facility is well furnished and larger than most you will find in other hotels.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the West side (6 floors) vice the East side (lobbyside) that only has two floors o...

Stayed at the Genesee Grande for one night over the Canada Day long weekend to take advantage of the new 24-hour duty-free exemptions.

Upon arrival, we were checked in promptly and efficiently. The front desk folks were friendly and pleasant and asked how our drive was, and if the border lineup was long.

Unfortunately I didn't read other reviews before checking in, so I didn't ask for a room in the Mayflower building. We were given a room on the 2nd floor in the other wing. It had its advantages in that we didn't need to use the elevator that seemed a bit out of the way. Upon turning a corner from the lobby, there was a short flight of stairs that took us to the 2nd floor.

The room itself was standard with a comfortable queen bed. The flat-screen LCD tv was a nice touch. The bathroom was a good size although I wish there was more counter space to put things like toiletries and small travel bags. I use a travel valet for my toiletries and it was hard to find a place to hang it up. There was no hook behind the door and really no other counter space to place items. The room didn't come with a coffee maker and I read on other reviews that it needs to be requested. There wasn't a mini-fridge either. The addition of a coffee maker and mini-fridge would have added to the overall experience.

Parking was free, which is a pro. Unfortunately there was some road construction on the hotel's side of the road, so walking around wasn't ideal. However it didn't seem like there were many other businesses in the Area. But everything seemed to be a short drive away.

We would recommend this hotel to friends on the caveat that it's a nice place to stay, but not to expect anything "wow". For the price we paid on Priceline, we would definitely stay again.

My husband and I stayed for a lovely evening at the Genessee Grande in June 2012. All in all, this was a lovely experience!

* Check in: We were warmly greeted upon check in and were provided with a complimentary upgrade to a King bed on the sixth floor. The front desk staff was polite and provided great suggestions on sights to see, etc.

* Room: Wow! The room was beautiful! From the luxurious linens on the king sized bed to the separate office with desk, everything exceeded our expectations. The rooms are incredibly spacious with several sitting areas. The rooms are clean, luxurious, and with all the modern amenities you could ask for.. except for coffee makers, but no big deal as free coffee is provided in the lobby every morning.

* Dining: We ate dinner at the hotel restaurant and had a lovely evening outside on the patio. The wine list is extensive with many exotic options as well as good values for whole bottles. Portions are very large, and in hindsight we could have shared an entree.

* Location: The hotel is centrally located to downtown, university and armory square. Everything is a very short drive (or a moderate walk).

Thank you for a wonderful stay, Genessee! We will be back!!

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the building with six floors. They are very spacious and comfortable.

A first visit to this hotel but not to Syracuse.. I will not stay anywhere else, now I know about this Gem. The staff was welcoming, patient and helpful to me in every way and I say that because I am not an easy to please guest. the hotel decor was a stepback to a "Grande"r time. The room was ready on time, immaculatly clean. The shuttle service readily available to get up the hill. Coffee maker was requested and there before I could get settled in the room. It is road construction time in NY but the room was wonderfully quiet. No free breakfast but I knew that upfront and enjoyed a wonderful one it in the restaurant.

The shower didn't have a plastic curtain so water spilled on the floor from the shower. I put a towel down to soak up the water between the shower and the toilet. I came back to the room during lunch and the some of towels folded on the rack were damp. If that wasn't bad enough, the bathroom was just not clean. Most of the staff were genuinely friendly.
