We went to the Everson to see the building but ended up really enjoying the exhibits. They currently have a show on Gustav Stickley that was very interesting and led us to find the Stickley Museum in East Syracuse.
It also inspired us, in part, to find the Johnson Art Museum at Cornell which was also designed by Pei.
It's a small museum and doesn't take long to go through but it is worth the visit.

This is an ok regional museum. The collection of ceramics and sculpture is interesting and we liked the focus there. The rest of the collection is a bit of hodge podge of painting from different eras. The building is striking and perhaps over shadows some of the work.

The Everson Museum is something everyone should visit at least once a year. Parking can be easy if you use the Oncenter gaarage and walk over - just a block. There is so much to see and learn from the exhibits - and the fun events around the holidays are not to be missed. Groups are welcome and that is refreshing for educators who want to treat their students to all the Everson has to offer.

Went to see exhibit of American Modern painting: O'Keeffe to Rockwell. The exhibit was OK, just average and seemed like an odd combination of genres. Made a point of getting there for the docent guided tour because I wanted an educational and critical analysis of the displayed works. The guide was not effective and clearly did not have a grasp on explaining art history to the public. After 20 minutes I was completely bored with the tour and bailed. The ceramics collections in the basement of the museum was impressive and immense. The museum shop was also a disappointment. The museum itself is a brilliant IM PEI design, but cold and imposing. There is a lovely staircase on the first floor. The staff at the desk and in the shop were friendly.

IF you especially like ceramics, this is one museum that should be planned into your trip through Upstate NY. IF the perception of beauty is something you appreciate, then viewing the internationally famous Robineau Scarab Vase in the museum collection is worth the visit all by itself. Yes, there most definitely ARE other objects on display well worthwhile including Some magnificent Maxfield Parrish works!.
