“Not bad...not great”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 1, 2011

We read the first two reviews, got a good rate and decided to try it. Factor number one for us is the bed and the Skyler bed was very comfortable. Factor #2 is noise and the Skyler failed this one - the AC is an old fashioned room unit mounted in what looks like a newly studded out chase - very loud - in fact, you could hear the AC in other rooms as it cycled. But the AC noise was actually a blessing because a group of people talking in normal voice in a neighboring room made too much noise to allow sleep because of the chase and lack of sound insulation. Luckily the hotel seemed pretty empty so 2 of 3 nights were OK.
Other factors: staff good, free wifi good, very clean (new) room, TV system with incorrect listing so you couldn't find local stations. And finally, too many pillows on the bed so there's nowhere to put them but the floor and then the housekeeper puts them back on the bed. Why have so many pillows on a bed??? Room is a little goofy with 16 foot ceiling and window about 12 feet up?
Would probably not stay again because of noise factor

Room Tip: No neighbors - above, below, or either side.

I read the reviews and the marketing for the Hotel Skyler and chose it for my return home to Syracuse. I've been gone traveling for a couple years and the Skyler was new since I had left and I hoped to find something new a modern and spectacular.

The room I was given was only steps from the bar and bathrooms. The few patrons at the bar were far from loud or rowdy but I could still hear them clearly in my room...so much for sleeping before 0200. The room itself was nice, but in no way deserving of the rate I was being charged. It was a standard hotel/motel room with nothing extraordinary or exceptional about it. The room layout was actually a little inconvenient with 2 people sharing the space. This is a renovated building so I understand the architectural challenges, but it doesn't change the fact that we were not comfortable in the room.

The Skyler is new so perhaps they are working the kinks out, I can't say for sure, but I probably won't stay here again if I ever return to Syracuse. It seems like they are trying a little too hard to be chic and are forgetting the essentials of hotel hospitality service.

We left after only one night and moved to a more established hotel in the city and had a wonderful experience there.

pjrgmv's review hits the nail on the head! I won't repeat those excellent and informative comments but want to add our viewpoint. This place is wonderful. It is welcoming, relaxing, comfortable, and elegant, all while being eco-conscious. There is no sacrifice of comfort or atmosphere for these green policies. The Skyler shows in the best way how to re-use an existing structure for a new purpose, how to put in place the most forward technologies and policies to create great accomodations, and how to provide a comfortable, lovely, welcoming atmosphere while cleaving to the sustainable path.

Here is some practical information: the hotel is very convenient to the Syracuse U campus (immediately north of it - you can walk to campus in a couple of minutes). The parking is free in an adjacent lot (amazing for this area). The wireless is excellent. The hotel is very quiet - even the heating and cooling system is nearly silent. There is a bar on the premises, some snacks are available for sale, and in the morning coffee is available for sale (all food products they sell are organic and sustainably grown). There is not a restaurant, but quite a few are within a block of the hotel. The beds and bedding are comfy comfy comfy. To get in our room, you wave your room card over an electronic pad and the door unlocks; then take the same card and place it in the port just inside the door, and your room powers up. When you take the card to go out, everything powers down except anything you might be charging (cool!). Our room had a tiny actual fridge (not a dumb mini-bar) so we could keep leftovers from resto meals. The service is great. One little thing in our room was not working, and when we called the desk about it, it was fixed in less than five minutes (!!!).

Minuses: hardly any. I was very glad that I had brought an old-fashioned paper printout of my Internet reservation info, because the hotel computer wanted me to pay a much higher rate. The immediate neighborhood around the hotel is a pragmatic one, with hospitals, parking structures and a bank, so any views are ugly. (So don't look out the window except to check the weather.) The only other minus is that there are not more examples of this hotel all over the country.

As a traveling musician, I am on the road 8 months out of the year. I've stayed at more hotels than I am capable of remembering. As an eco-conscious consumer, I try to find lodging that is centered on sustainable building practices, even though it is pretty rare to find. I can say with complete honesty and enthusiasm that my stay at Hotel Skyler was the best lodging experience I have ever had while traveling, and that is saying a lot.

While luxurious, it isn't like mega-hotels that have fountains and grand staircases. The genius of this hotel lies in the way it was constructed. The outer structure is that of an old Synagogue. They kept the entire outer structure intact, and formed the entire interior around the existing structure of the building. This results in rooms that are completely unique from one another in fascinating ways. The lobby decor is elegant and minimal in the best possible way.

I asked for a tour, and the manager showed me around. Carpets, wallpapers, countertops, soaps, showers....pretty much every single thing was made from either recycled materials or in the most sustainable way possible. But the best part that I took away from my experience is that whether or not you are into the whole 'green' thing, no style or substance was sacrificed at all in the decor of the place. The rooms are luxurious, but hip. The beds were unbelievably comfortable too. It was just an incredibly cool place and I can't say enough good things about it!!

Room Tip: Each room in unique in a great way!!
