“This place is a dump!”
Reviewed July 20, 2009

Our Aunt called the hotel to check and make sure that it was "pet friendly" and she was told they were. So we booked 5 nights at the hotel with our two pups. We checked into our NON-SMOKING room, which was a joke, as it smelled like a wet ashtray and there were cigarette burns on the side of the bathtub and burn holes in our blanket on the bed. Someone came into spray after we complained, but it did not mask the odor. While they visited our room, they noticed our pups and said that they did NOT accept pets and we were not in their pet room. Well, if you DO NOT accept pets, what are you doing with a pet room? After his departure we received a phone call informing us that they DO NOT accept pets and since we had unpacked they would not make us relocate to the pet room - WHAT?!?!? They also informed us that the nightly pet fee was $20 per pet, but the would only charge us $15 for two, well thanks a lot! Again, if you DO NOT accept pets why do you have a pet room and why do you have a fee??? Also, we encountered two other guests with dogs, hmmmmm.......After getting settled in, we left the hotel room for the night with our pups and when we returned they LOCKED US OUT of our room, because we didn't come to the front desk to pay for the pet fees. My husband told them they had our credit card on file, but they said they had to swipe the card, whatever! They also charged us $9.00/night for a safe in the room which we did not ask for, so we asked them to remove said charges. This place is a joke, they boast that it was remodeled in 2007, REALLY?!?! I would hate to see what it looked like prior to our stay ........The only good attributes to the room were the refrigerator and A/C. Other than that it was filthy, smelled and I didn't feel comfortable sleeping in the room at all, but we had no other options!

I stayed there recently and basically, you get what you pay for!! The rooms where decent and clean..the towels had some questionnable stains...the walls are extremely thin...I heard everything from people talking to squeeking beds (Hint). The continental breakfast was OK and the staff basically give you basic information. Overall I rate this hotel as average...its has a motel vibe to it but don't expect much from it.

This HoJo was an adequate place to stay; pretty much what you would expect. Room was spacious enough, with fridge, micro, etc. Free internet (wireless in room; terminal in lobby) which was nice. Staff were not up to scratch however. Language skills very limited. No eye contact. Breakfast was marginal. Minimal fruit; no yogourt / eggs / etc. or anything very "healthy".

My biggest complaint was access to public transit. We were booked here via a bus tour from Canada. For those of us wishing to stay in Manhattan to take in an evening play (with the return being too late for our bus), we had to:
1. get to Penn Station and find the NJ Transit train to Secaucus (about a 10 min train trip);
2. transfer at Secaucus to the Suffern train, which was 60 minutes in duration; and
3. hail a cab at the train station. Arriving at 11:30 pm, the train station was closed; there were no cabs; no nothing. We were completely stranded.

Mercifully, I had a cell phone. The hotel gave me some numbers to try. After $18 in cell charges and 45 minutes of waiting at midnight in an isolated, strange place, a taxi arrived. We were mightily glad to arrive safely back at the hotel, but I would NEVER do this again.

Long story short, so long as you have your own transportation, HoJo is fine. Definitely nothing special or interesting, but fine.

I was initially concerned about the mixed reviews but other reviewers' photo posts convinced us to try this establishment. The room was spacious, clean and well kept. The bathroom was modern and looked new. For the amount we paid, the accommodations definitely exceeded my expectations. It was comfortable and perfect after a long late drive and an early morning start. Didnt really see any of the common areas.

The folks at the front desk are not top notch but gets the job done. Got the impression that dealing with guests was for sport. There were three of them talking animatedly about personal stuff when we came up and finally there was a pause before one decided to "take one for the team" and check us in. The gentleman who checked us in also accommodated our request for a restaurant recommendation.

Major complaints for this Inn - we checked into a room where there were dirty floors throughout. Behind the TV was a receptacle that was not secured to the wall allowing unsafe wire exposure. During our stay there was a small snow storm - the plow truck driver who was hired by the motel drove through the parking lot for two days doing 60 miles an hour foward and reverse making people jump out of the way! I complained to no avail. Guests were horrified and "scared". One man called him "dangerous" - that was an understatement. The continental breakfast was very poor. Water would come out of the spouts marked juice, etc. and when asked, the attendand rudely told us that they were "out" and would not be replenishing. The icing on the cake was on 02/23/08 when police were swarming the motel because a guest was assaulted, knifed and robbed in a store across the street. The lobby was continually inhabited by "gang" types. I checked out early and will make a point of never going back. Other guests said the same. I thought Howard Johnson's had a good reputation. I guess I was sadly mistaken at least at this location.

I did spend here about two weeks, management has changed and the staff very courteous and friendly, they’re still struggling with some repairs but overall very comfortable, safe, quite and the best rates around.
Will stay there again.
