“A Harbor in the Storm”
Reviewed September 5, 2011

We had booked the SI Hampton Inn for a one night pre-cruise stay, based on reviews on another cruise related website. Having never been to Staten Island, we did not know what to expect. With Irene bearing down on the east coast, our one night stay turned into 3 nights and 4 days at the Hampton Inn, as we came in a day early and the ship was a day late in sailing. I cannot say enough about this hotel and its staff. The Hampton Inn sits on a 400 acre parcel within a wooded area of Staten Island owned by the Nicotra Group. There is a sister hotel, the Hilton Garden Inn that has a wonderful restaurant (Lorenzo's). There are numerous sculptures throughout the entire campus. Clearly the Nicotras are art lovers (I have since googled them and they are very interesting people, not the least of which is their foundation that provides education funds for their employees). The SI Hampton Inn has the same amenities of other Hampton Inns where we have stayed. A great gym, luxurious linens and bedding, free breakfast and the very much appreciated free wi-fi. The staff made sure we were kept informed regarding the storm, and advised that we may lose power or have to be evacuated, neither of which occurred. But the staff was well prepared, and despite the fact that they may have been worried about their family members or property, they were always friendly and attentive. In the midst of some of the heaviest part of the storm, we even had an exquisite dinner at Lorenzo's over at the Hilton. And with breaks in the storm, we were able to hop on the Staten Island ferry for a couple of trips into the City (made available by the free shuttle). So, this hotel is much, much more than a one nighter destination.

I stayed here for one night in August with my husband and kids during Hurricane Irene when we lost power. The room had 2 Queen beds, which were very clean and very comfortable. Bathroom was also very clean, and had a spacious whirlpool bath. I appreciated the frige and microwave provided in the room. Free breakfast is provided from 6am-10am: Get there early. The breakfast bar provided fresh fruit, an assortment of hot and cold cereals, yogurt, make-your-own waffles, and there was some sort of eggs and bacon (I got there at 7am, and the eggs were already gone) .

Drawbacks:
+ There's no closet in the room I was given; no place to hang up any items other than on the back of the bathroom door.
+ The selection of TV channels available - I came with two 7-year olds, and there was no channel appropriate for them. Thank goodness I brought iPads with movies loaded. And they use satellite TV, which was pretty spotty given the weather conditions we were enduring at the time.
+ The indoor pool was closed when we stayed here, due to the weather. Not sure what that meant.
+ The "high speed internet" provided the hotel is not very high speed at all. Quite the opposite. But I guess you can't really complain when its free.

Check in and check out were very smooth. Front desk staff were inundated (again, there were a bunch of panicked, stressed out folks taking shelter from a hurricane in their hotel) but they did their best.

Overall, my stay was not unpleasant. If I had to stay here again, I would do so gladly.

Thank you so much for recognizing our staff during your stay. We are happy that we were exactly what you needed at that time. I will be sure to pass this to our staff and management. It is unfortunate that you experienced some instances that could have made your stay that much better especially the drawback of the missing closet. Our rooms are designed in such a way that we understand some will not notice the huge mirror in the room is actually a closet that opens and or slides for more storage space. I wish we known you had this issue, we would have happily shared our hidden treasure with you.

Our pool was closed due to the weather because New York State requires that a lifeguard be present in a commercially operated pool in order for it to be open. Due to the storm a lot of people were not able to make it out to work which unfortunately required us to have our pool closed.

Rest assured we are currently working on our situation with the television channel selection and will do our best to provide more options for everyone.

Stayed here for just one night in Aug 11. We we visiting family on Staten Island and needed a hotel the night. After searching online and reading other TA reviews we decided on the Hampton Inn. The staff was very friendly, we had 3 rooms and didn't check in until about 9:30 pm. The took care of us very quickly and had all rooms near each other on the same floor. Rooms look new, were very clean and beds were comfy! We we able to walk over to the Hilton next door for a bite to eat which worked out well. I would recommend this place.

I spent three nights with my son at the property in August as we had meetings in Staten Island. We opted for a suite with two Queen beds which was very spacious and very very quiet. The even numbered rooms look out over the parking lot (rather than the expressway) so these are the ones to go for if you like peace and quiet. The bathroom was tiny with a vanity unit outside. There was also a fridge and microwave in the entrance area. The gym is open 24/7 and has a reasonable selection of equipment. The pool did not look terribly inviting and was only open occasionally on account of legislation requiring life guards on duty at all times. Breakfast is free but just looking at most of the items could put you into a diabetic coma. The Hilton across the parking lot has a decent restaurant where we had a couple of very good meals at reasonable cost. The hotel shares a shuttle with the Hilton which you must reserve and serves Newark Airport and the Staten Island Ferry. I wish we had known about the shuttle when we arrived and saved the hefty cab fare. We did use it to get to the ferry on our departure and it was really helpful. The Staten Island Mall is about a 10 minute cab ride away and has a good selection of stores including an Apple Store (the second to be opened in the New York area). There is also a Hollister which has no line and was practically giving away its merchandise when we went. Quite a contrast to 5th Avenue in NYC which we passed the following day. The only really weird element to the trip was the hotel recommendation to use Village Taxis. Otherwise the service was great. After three seriously unpleasant journeys where the drivers had clearly not read the passengers rights (smoking, choking, spitting, using a cell phone while driving) we gave up on them and moved onto another service where merely hearing insults about our fellow countrymen felt like a 5 star service and one of the drivers was actually delightful. I would recommend the hotel if you need to be in Staten Island. However if you really want to be in the city that never sleeps, it's a bit of a trek to get there.

Dear FrequentflyerLondon,

Thank you for your comments we really do appreciate your comments made about the cab service. When other transportation options are not available Village has shown to be very reliable and consistent, but we will address a few of these issues with them to see if they can accomodate our guest expectations.

I stayed at this Hampton Inn in early August 2011 as a guest of a wedding. The best part of my stay was that all of the staff was very friendly and very professional. Two examples: Ms. Robin went above and beyond what was needed in helping me get ready for the wedding and with the transporation of the guests to the wedding. Ms. Bonnie was also very helpful in helping me at the last minute to secure reliable and economical transporation to LaGuardia Airport instead of taking the ferry and the buses. The work out room in the hotel was well kept, and housekeeping did a fine job in preparing the room for my arrival. The hotel breakfast had many options and the woman in charge of keeping the items stocked was efficient and courteous. Approximately one week before I arrived in New York, I called the hotel and made reservations for the hotel's shuttle to pick me up from the Staten Island ferry. The shuttle driver was right on time and in a well marked van so there was no question about my security. This hotel is a good hotel if you plan to spend the majority of your time in Staten Island. The shuttle ride to the ferry was about 25 minutes. So if your vacation plans include many trips outside of Staten Island or jaunting around town plan accordingly and/or consider renting a car for trips to the store/dining/etc. Also, I would recommend making any shuttle reservations for the ferry a week in advance because depending on if it is a busy weekend the time you want may be booked if you try to reserve it a few days in advance. However, the hotel shuttle runs to and from the hotel to Newark Airport. My friends who flew in and out of Newark had no problems with making shuttle reservations for the time they needed, so this is a time and money saver you may want to consider in making your plans. Overall, this was a wonderful hotel, and I would highly recommend it.
