Postcards-The The Staten Island September 11 Memorial
Certificate of Excellence
Attraction details
Reviewed August 8, 2013

Like someone else said...how do you 'rate' a memorial. It is what it is; a commemoration to those S.I. residents murdered on September 11, 2001. It can't be anything but excellent because it seeks to keep their memories alive and respected as the daily grind of life and history go on.

What I like about the memorial is the "snowplow" arches that frame where the WTC towers would've stood across the harbor in Lower Manhattan. And on the inside of each "plowblade" are silhouettes of each S.I. resident who died there and the silhouettes are all forever looking at that tragic location - day and night - for as long as the memorial exists.

Beside each silhouette is a tile with that person's name, birthday, position within what company located in the WTC towers where they perished. What a great way to keep each person's memory individual and not just part of one big statistic.

The waterfront location is perfect for the memorial as this is where many people on S.I. etc witnessed 9-11-01 unfold. And the waterfront makes it fairly quiet and serene - very fitting for a memorial.

As another poster said, if you take the S.I. Ferry, please walk the block or less it takes to go see the details of this memorial. Well worth it.

Arriving in Staten Island, exit the ferry terminal and head right, past the baseball stadium. When you stand between the postcards you have a direct line of vision to where the twin towers stood.
The postcard walls contain carvings of the faces of every Staten Island resident who lost their life in those towers on 9/11, along with their names and birthdates.

This memorial is dedicated to the 274 Staten Island residents who lost their lives in the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center. The memorial is called Postcards because its two white marble wing sculptures represent large postcards to loved ones.

Each Staten Island victim is honored with a granite plaque bearing their name, birthdate, and place of work on September 11, 2001 as well as their profile in silhouette. It is so touching and moving when you spend time reflecting upon the events of that fateful day and then seeing all the people, young and old, male and female, worker and civil servant. It is one of the best designed and meaningful memorials of recent time. Staten Island Railway runs the lenght of the island and the Staten Island Ferry is free for those in the outer boroughs and tourists. If you are in NYC, take the time, get on the ferry and visit the memorial.

After taking the Staten Island ferry to Staten Island we got a sandwich then walked to this September 11th memorial, sat on a park bench and enjoyed the Manhattan skyline then viewed the Postcards memorial.

There were no crowds so this is an excellent location to reflect and remember.

The first time I saw this memorial I was blown away. It's location and the symbolism of this simple yet beautiful work of art should not be missed. I have taken many visitors to Staten Island to see it and they all seem to have had a great appreciation for it's beauty and it's meaningful tribute.
It is within walking distance from the Staten Island Ferry.
