We recently stumbled across Steinys with friends after taking the Staten Island ferry. Great atmosphere and really friendly staff and locals. Food was good, definitely worth a visit. A welcome break from Manhattan bars.

My husband and I did the free ferry thing and thought we'd have a mooch around Staten Island and have some lunch. We asked a random guy where all the shops were but he said there weren't any really and he walked into a pub. We thought if a local guy is going in there it must be good so we followed him - turned out he'd never been in Steiny's either. However, it was a great find, the staff in there could not have been friendlier and the food was absolutely delicious, I can definitely recommend the burgers. The pub was full of character and I bet on an evening it is a great place to go. So glad we didn't just get back on the return ferry when we'd arrived, we would have missed out!

Great towns people at this neighborhood pub. Fair prices and bartenders will buy ya back if you're a decent person. Enjoy some live music on the weekends or just a little local company during the week. Come twice and they'll remember your name.

There are those of us who like to explore a destination despite the weather. On a cold, rainy day in December we rode the ferry from NYC to Staten Island. Not too many people around that day. Rather than just ride back, we decided to seek out a local place to have some lunch, and came across Steiny's.

It's just a small pub with a simple menu and a whole lot of local flavor. An eclectic array of holiday decorations covering the bar and the walls reminded me of my childhood. The warm and worn atmosphere made me feel like a local. Despite a waitress that was friendly and helpful, the food came out slow considering how empty the place was.

But the food was great! Top notch pastrami and Reuben's. And really...where else can you get a quality liverwurst sandwich?? No fancy food here, just great New York neighborhood fare.

Next time you take the ferry ride, get off and take a walk to Steiny's and spend some time getting to know the authentic New York. You'll go home talkin' like a local!
