“Great place to say in NY”

This hotel worked out perfect for us. It was easy to take the ferry across and get on the subway to go wherever we wanted. It we got a good hotel for the right amount of money.

We stayed at the Navy Lodge Staten Island on a recent NYC trip. It is not a luxury hotel, but it was a fine for a place to sleep after a long day of touristing. The drive to the ferry took us about 15 minutes and another 5 - 10 minutes to park and get to the terminal. My children really enjoyed the ferry ride and it gave us a chance to see the Statue of Liberty. We would definitely stay here again, but next time we plan to also stay at least one night in Manhattan. If you are simply looking for an inexpensive place to sleep, this is the place for you.

The Navy Lodge is bare bones but great value! It is only a short drive to the ferry which has a huge parking lot and the ferry of course is a free way into the city. The drive from the Lodge to the ferry is about a 5-10 minute drive or about $10 ride by taxi.

This place is really in a great location, but I was beyond disappointed for the typical quality of a Navy Lodge. Usually this means some sort of standard (akin to a marriott courtyard). This lodge, while nicely decorated, and very spacious, was the worst smelling room I have ever been in in my entire life. I asked to switch rooms, which they could not do becuase they were booked. Yet, when I checked in they had plenty of rooms, this is the one they chose to give ME. I would have checked out if I had any alternatives lined up at 9 at night. The front desk staff provided a fan and lysol, but that will not get rid of mold.

The PROS: free continental breakfast with great coffee, nice staff. Managment comped my room 50%. Great views of the Verazzano bridge, distant NYC views, and wonderful old fort to explore and take pictures.

bottom line: for a bit more money you have to stay elsewhere (try Jersey City) and just visit the lodge grounds to get the views of the bridge. The mold MUST go.

Room Tip: check in early and insist you get a room that is mold free.

My husband, two children (15 and 12 yrs. old), and I stayed at the Navy Lodge New York on Staten Island for 3 nights in June 2011. The front desk was friendly and even held our bags since we arrived early on the first day and our room was not yet available. The room we reserved included a small kitchenette with 2 Queen-sized beds and a roll-away bed. The room was a little crowded with the additional roll-away bed, but we anticipated that and adjusted accordingly. Overall the room was clean and the beds were comfortable. The only real issue with the room itself was the shower. The shower curtain could not be closed properly since it was of a rounded nature and slanted at an awkward angle. This resulted in a horribly flooded bathroom whenever we took our showers. We brought it to the attention of the front desk personnel. They stated that they were aware of the problem, but could do nothing about it at the current time. I got the impression that all of the rooms had the same problem. So, ask for extra towels to put on the floor before you take a shower!

The only other irritant was the number of towels the maid provided us. They knew there were four of us in the room, but every day they only provided us with three towels. I contacted the front desk the first evening of our stay and she provided us with additional towels for that evening. I assumed the issue would be passed on to the maids, but we continued to receive only three towels when they straightened up our room every day. They also did not make up my daughter’s rollaway bed one day. We worked around these issues, but we did think less of the maid service because of it.

The other thing I should mention is the ferry. The ferry is free and runs on-time about on the half hour between St. George Ferry Terminal and Battery Park Terminal on Manhattan. We never had an issue getting seats. It adds an additional 1 ½ hrs. to your day since it’s about a 30 min. ferry ride each way and you have to add about 10 – 15 mins. waiting time on each side. We knew this when we reserved the room and accepted it because the room price was so reasonable; especially for New York.

Even with the shower and maid issue, I rate this establishment a 3.5 out of 5 because of the very reasonable room rate. I don’t think you would find better accommodations for a family of four for the price in New York.

Had a family vaca in NYC and stayed at this Navy Lodge for a week and we loved it! The hotel is located on Staten Island and there is a free ferry you can take to NYC. The ferry is a about a 10-15 min drive from the hotel. Ferry parking is $5.50 all day. The hotel is nice, clean and roomy for a family of 4. There is a small kitchen with a full size fridge, stove, microwave, toaster and dishes. The employees where all very nice. We had one problem with a clogged bath tub...but it was fixed the next day. Everything else at the lodge worked just fine. There are about 50 rooms, 2 stories and no elevator. The stairs weren't too bad. I would suggest booking early via internet or calling since you can't really beat a deal like this in NYC. Cost during this time was right under $100 per night compared to Manhattan hotels going at about $250-$400/night :-)

Room Tip: Book Early!

With the god awful cost of staying in Manhattan or anywhere in the city, this is a little Gem. This is the second time we have stayed here and we have been very pleased both times. At night it is a little hard to get into as you have to find your way to the back gate at the base to get in, during day hours you can drive in the front gate with no problems. This appears to be an army/coast guard reserve base now, so security is much lighter than at a regular base.

The rooms were spotlessly clean, the staff were very helpful. We always use the kitchenette at a Navy Lodge as it saves us dollars in eating out. The only complaint we would have is the spatuala is inexpensive plastic. We always bring our own spices and sugar as we have yet to find them in any Navy Lodge. Now we add a good spatula from home.

The room had nice quiet AC, big screen tv with a DVD Player. The room was spacious and comfortable. No elevator in the faciltity but if you let them know you need a ground floor room they do their best to facilitate your request. The stove and refrigerator worked just fine. It is a SMALL kitchen, but you can make simple meals easily.

They do seem to be doing upgrades as time goes on. The only negative change I would find is that this year they charge for internet access in the room.

It is a quick drive to the ferry terminal, and the ferry ride is free. One of the best deals in New York. It also provides a fine fiew of Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty.

Also there is access to Fort Wadsworth. Worth seeing and visually appealing.

We will definitly stay again. A good value. Give it a try if you go to the "City".

Room Tip: Plan ahead and call early. Call direct to the Inn
