We stayed at Harbor House over Memorial Day Weekend. We wanted to do NYC on a budget, but with two preschoolers, we couldn't risk being in an unsafe place in Manhattan. We settled on HH and got a great rate. Molly, the innkeeper, was awesome. The place was safe and clean. It was not luxurious, nor was the rooms overly big. However, it WAS worth the price and exceeded our expectations.

Note: If you stay here, it WILL take you at least an hour to get to Manhattan. It's a 5-10 minute ride to the ferry, then a 1-30 minute wait for the ferry, then a 28 minute fery ride to Manahattan. Plus, the subway/cab ride to wherever you are going.

Staten Island was not as nice as I expected, but Harbor House was one of the nicest things on the island. We ate at the Iguana restaurant, and it was awesome.

If you're looking for a fancy-schmancy perfumed soaps-mint on your pillow Vermont-style B&B, you'll be disappointed. On the other hand, if you are looking for a clean, comfortable, safe and very reasonably priced refuge from the hustle and bustle of Manhattan, you'll love the Harbor House! And, in the evening, you can relax on the porch and watch the ships coming and going in the harbor (surprisingly, without being bothered by mosquitos). The inkeeper, Molly, is a real gem - friendly, helpful and attentive to the comfort of her guests.
The place IS a little out of the way, but there is a bus-stop a block away (close to a Dunkin Donuts, Baskin Robbins, & a Subway subshop) where you can catch a quick ride to the Staten Island Ferry. And, let me tell you, the ferry ride into Manhattan, past the Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island, is far from being an inconvenience!
