“Staten Island Chuck!”
Reviewed October 18, 2013

We (3 adults) visited the zoo specifically to see the groundhog Staten Island Chuck and luckily we saw him and his girlfriend Charlotte. It was Wednesday afternoon so admission was free. Creatures with no legs or more than 4 legs don't appeal to us so we didn't go into the indoor enclosures. We only stayed about half an hour because we had to get back to Manhattan for a show but enjoyed our short visit, especially seeing the young Binturong playing with a keeper, and the sloth and otter. Most animals seemed happy but one of them (can't remember which, maybe the Lynx?) was pacing in it's cage so could do with a better enclosure. There was construction works going on so perhaps there are improvements happening.

“bring the kids”
Reviewed September 19, 2013

the staten island zoo is a great attraction for the kids. it's small, with lots of things to keep the kids busy. there are none of the larger mammals such as elephants, lions, etc., but they have a great reptile collection, animals from africa and australia, and lots of fish. there are plenty of fenced-in farm animals that can be fed by hand (you have to pay for the food--$.50 for a small amount of feed) and petted. even better, be sure to take the kids to the kid's korral. there is a $1 per person admission, but they can actually get inside the pen, right next to the alpacas, goats and sheep, who are just waiting to be fed and petted. and there is a lot of room for the kids to run. there are also some larger-than-life sculptures of turtles, snakes and frogs that are made for climbing. and as a bonus, parking is FREE, and you can BRING IN YOUR OWN FOOD! how often does that happen? (there is a cafe, with the usual franks, burgers and fries.) all in all, a nice day trip for the little ones.

“the BEST local zoo in NYC”
Reviewed July 31, 2013

This zoo caters to the 2 years to 18 year old...many interactive learning exhibits (e.g., listen to the heartbeat of a snake...docents with small animals that kids can pet...etc)

It covers all continents and has a wide variety of wildlife (from tarantulas to lemurs)...

Also a cool little play area behind the museum with oversized bronze animals that kids can play on...

Bring your own food! the cafeteria has pretzels, popcorn, etc... no healthy options, just carbs!
