After our past visits to not so great children's museums in New Jersey and even Manhattan, I didn't pump up any expectations for my kids (ages 11 and 5) as we drove to the Staten Island Children's Museum for the first time. (See their respective reviews by other Tripadvisor members - they're on target.)
We were pleasantly surprised! The place was clean, well-lit and attractive. I think it's geared primarily to 2-8 year olds. The exhibits were child friendly, prompted curiosity, and were all functioning properly. There were no commercial tie-ins. Just simple but interesting exhibits that children naturally gravitated to. Our favorites included the "Explorations" and the "Insects" exhibits. Even my 11 year old son found interesting things to work with. The museum is part of the Snug Harbor Cultural Center, which is in itself a nice place with gardens and historic buildings.
Pack a picnic lunch, and enjoy the low key museum and the gardens. Although we drove in from NJ, it's a short bus ride from SI Ferry terminal if you're coming in from the city.
