Heron Harbor Suites is a great place to stay on the northern tip of Long Island. The suite was spacious, well equipped, comfortable and very clean. It had everything we wanted and was close to all the attractions that interested us.

The staff was very friendly and helpful. They are redoing their restaurant and it will open in July 2010.

I recommend Heron Harbor Suites.

We needed three rooms to accommodate a college reunion and birhttday celebration on the North Fork. Heron Harbour was the perfect location, near all the area wineries and close enough to go to Greenport for the Maritime Festival. Ths location gave our friends a perfect central locaiton to experience both events.
The courtyard afforded us a great opportunity to entertain all our guest in a clean and comfortable location. The rooms are immaculate, and the kitchen has everything you could possibly need while away from home. The water view of Southold bay is perfect to wake up to.
The staff is super friendly and incredably helpful. We were given passes to a private beach, few people and lots of fun. All the friends had such a great time we plan to make this an annual event.

Ok the good things: it was the only hotel that would take a booking for just one night on a August weekend, the rooms are clean and functional.
BUT:
the management sucks, the rules and fines are stupid. For $200+ per night, I am sorry if I may soil a towel, but it is not a big deal and you cannot fine me $30+ (I did not soil anything but there is a rule!).
the receptionist when we arrived seemed on the verge to hang herself and seemed to hate us. (the departure was fine).
The decor makes is depressing, the downstairs room dark.
It won't feel like a holiday place, stuck between two warehouses on a harbor...

Nowadays, it seems that anytime you reserve a hotel room where you’ve never stayed before, you always go into the deal with some apprehension. You’re never really sure if you’ve made the right decision with all the choices of hotels in a given area. You hear and read so many horror stories sometimes you just want to stay home.

If you reserve a room at Heron Harbor Suites, you have absolutely nothing to worry about. The minute you walk into the office to announce your arrival, you are greeted by a warm and friendly staff. You walk out of the office with key in hand and proceed to your room. You open the door and you are immediately struck by … “holy mackerel, this room is immaculate!” You walk around exploring the different rooms and simply can’t believe how clean it is. Oftentimes when we go to a hotel, I never walk barefoot, because you just never know about that carpet. Well, it didn’t take very long before I was barefoot. Also, a test I apply to any hotel room is “The Bathroom Test”. Face it, the bathroom is the most challenging room to keep clean, even in your own home. Needless to say, Heron Harbor received an A+.

Then, of course, is the kitchen. There aren’t too many hotels that have kitchens, but here there is and you instinctively apply The Kitchen Test. Sometimes you hesitate to open the oven door or look under the sink. No problem here; the kitchen also gets an A+.

After “the inspection” of your room, you immediately know you’ve made the right decision. The room rates are very comparable to other hotels in the area, plus you get the kitchen. You plop down on the couch and start to plan the events of your stay.
The North Fork is a beautiful place to visit. With the blue of the bays, the vineyards, boating, local beaches and shopping, there is no place better to hang your hat than at Heron Harbor Suites.

It’s a family run business and they take every aspect of their business very seriously. Kate and her family are wonderful people and it’s nice to know you still can find a place where you will be treated like family when you stay at the Heron Harbor Suites.

Beautiful and charming Inn on the Main Road in Southold. Immaculately clean. Beautifully manicured courtyard. Quiet, peaceful, great get-a-way. Friendly staff welcomes you to this gem of an Inn and is extremely accommodating. I highly recommend Heron Harbor Inn. I will return time and time again.

Just returned from a long weekend at the Heron Harbor Inn, there are very good things about this motel and very bad, let me walk through them. First the good, we stayed in one of their suites and the room was immaculate. Looked like everything had a fresh coat of paint and the attention to detail (crown moldings in all the rooms) nice wooden shutters, etc., was impressive. The kitchen was very modern and as I said spotless. The other positive attribute of this motel is its general location. It is about 10 minutes away from the village of Greenport Harbor and minutes away from the North Fork wine country. So the general location is ok.

Now the bad, this motel is tucked into what can best be described as an marine industrial park. Our bedroom and bathroom windows were facing a large warehouse which blocked any view. The motel itself is comprised of a one and two story building. You would only want to sleep there, there is no place to walk around. When we drove in, I thought you have to be kidding, there is a motel here…and sure enough there was.

As for the other guest comments, I do agree the signs they have all over the rooms are ridiculous. A full kitchen, but absolutely no cooking of seafood allowed, no lowering the thermostat below 70, no using towels for removing make up, all of these rules come with fines that are nicely outlined in their guest handbook. All of these rules don’t come at a cheap price either, we paid around $260 per night. As for the housekeeping service, as best I could tell all they did was make the bed, the towels weren’t changed nor was the place cleaned up at all.

The pictures they have on the website show a small courtyard which sits in between the two small buildings. What you don’t see is that it is overlooking the road, not the harbor and it is not a particularly comfortable place to sit. Oh by the way, it closes at 10….not that I checked, but I am sure if you are caught loitering in the courtyard past 10 there would be another fine.

Anyway, as I said the room itself was very nice, but the location in the marina, the poor housekeeping and the ridiculous rules would stop me from recommending this place. There are so many other B&Bs or small resorts in nicer towns on the North Fork that are better than this place. BTW I am curious to see my final bill (of course no one is around at check out time), just wonder what rule I inadvertently broke that will add $50 my charges.

The good: Katie seems to be a delightful person. Truly. Smiling and warm.

The bad: Think of it as your best friend, whom you love dearly, who wants to sing at your wedding. Some people really shouldn't, and the people running Heron Harbor REALLY shouldn't be in the hospitality business. No one there seems to have an eye for the very basic requirements of a being hosts. Others in our party stayed in a more basic roadside motel nearby (don't remember the name), and they were thrilled - at less than half the price.

The ugly: The place is basically okay, but, as others have noted here, things turn adversarial when a "guest" (!) steps outside of the many, many detailed requirements - and will be charged dearly ($150 for late departure, $100 for early arrival, $50 for that stained facecloth, $75 if you turn the A/C below 70, etc. etc. - and, yes - they DO charge you!) One in our party (we booked a lot of room$, for a wedding weekend) was charged $27 to receive extra towels - take it or leave it - the morning after her son's wedding! Many, many more anecdotes, but do yourself a favor - stay away.
