This establishment markets itself as a chic upscale lodging -- and charges prices to match -- but in fact is a dumpy, semi-renovated motel with a dysfunctional staff seemingly unacquainted with the notion of customer service. The good news is that the rooms are large (really they are two-room suites, divided by a bathroom and a sort of mini-kitchenette), the beds are comfortable, and the pool is quite nice. But the site is unattractive (it sits right off the main highway leading into the Village of Southampton), and the renovations are slipshod. It is obvious that management has cut a lot of corners. When we visited with an extended family group over the summer, the carpets were badly stained in many of our rooms and the paint in the bathrooms was peeling. In addition, the pull-out sofas (which we needed for children to sleep on) were broken in several rooms, and the promised cots (also for children) turned out to be unavailable. Our kids slept on the floor. Worst of all, the atttitude of the staff ranged from indiffent to hostile. At one point, when I complained about the broken sofa-beds and non-existent cots, I was lectured on my tone of voice and told that I should be grateful we were permitted to stay there at all. Bottom line: It's not a Bentley at all. It's more like a used Chevrolet.

First things first: If you are looking for a 5-star resort on the beach...well, this is not the place. On the other hand, if you plan to spend most of your time away from the hotel and are looking for an affordable place to rest your head (and a front desk staff that is nothing but friendly and helpful) then The Bentley will do just fine. Staying at The Bentley is not about location, location, location. No, it's not located in the Village of Southampton (though it is in the Town of Southampton), but rather about a 5 mile drive away. The converted motel is located right off Route 39 which takes you into Southampton (and ultimately leads to Route 27 aka Montauk Highway). Rooms face the parking lot (quiet) and Route 39 (if you're from Manhattan, no problem), which in the a.m. features crawling traffic into town as this is the main route for both leisure travelers and the so-called "trades parade" (i.e. landscapers/gardeners, pool guys, a/c service technicians, etc.) The good news is that you can easily scoot down to Montauk Highway which has less traffic and will bring you right into the village (you will know you are there when Montauk Highway turns into Hill Street and the speed limit drops to 25 MPH--watch out for SV Police). The hotel features a nice, clean pool that we pretty much had to ourselves during our stay. There is also a tennis court that is almost always not being used. Now, we stayed from Sunday-Friday so be mindful that things should be busier on weekends. The rooms are large--reportedly 750 SF--in fact larger than many a Manhattan apt. They feature a bedroom, living room (w/pull-out couch) and kitchenette with a m/w and refrigerator. Nice crisp sheets, fluffy pillows and Aveda bath products--if you're into that sort of thing. The set-up was perfect for our family of 5. One thing to note is that check-in is at a sister property, The Atlantic, across Route 39. That's where you need to go to check-in, pick up a beach permit ($250 deposit reqd, good for town beaches--I recommend Flying Point) and beach towels ($35/towel deposit) and anything else you may need that requires face-to-face interaction. The Atlantic is only 2 minutes away, but crossing Route 39 can take 10-15 minutes when traffic is heavy. All-in-all, I'd recommend The Bentley as a very good value. If you want a place on the beach, try renting a house for the season for $100k from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
