Looking for a comfortable, homey spot for lunch, dinner, or just the best homemade ice cream you may ever have tasted? Look at the Tollgate in Slingerlands. Family owned for generations, this eatery has an extensive menu of typical American food, from soups, salads, and sandwiches to full dinner platters. The heart of the menu is the homemade ice cream in a myriad of flavors. Yesterday's features included tangerine sherbet, banana ice cream, peanut butter and jelly ice cream... There are always more than two dozen special flavors, each one an ice cream lover's dream. On top of that, they still make the old-fashioned sodas, malts, and sundaes. Decor is homey, too -- the large old American flag on the wall has only 48 stars. In the back of the room you can see a real wooden telephone booth, with working telephone. The booths and tables are all rock maple, and there are still red-top chrome stools at the ice cream counter. Prices for meals are standard. Ice cream specialities may be a bit more than you would pay in some places, but the superb quality of the product and the special attention to detail on sundaes, banana splits, etc. more than make up for the cost. Wait staff is attentive, friendly, and efficient. Do stop at this spot next time you're anywhere near New York State's capital district. It's a friendly family-oriented atmosphere. No liquor on the premises.
