To see something of the countryside outside of New York and to see some Fall colour we caught the train to Kykuit. We travelled alongside the Hudson, sit on the left side of the train, then we walked through Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow to the meeting point for the tour guide and bus. We took the Classic tour, which gave us lots of information, and i would say that for the casual visitor this is more than adequate.
The house and contents were worth a visit and we had an enjoyable day. Doris, the guide, was good too.

We booked our reservations for the 3 hr grand tour months in advance, then I got worried when I read about how there was a lot of walking and standing with no places to rest or use the restroom. We had a great time. We thought this was one of the highlights of our Hudson Valley trip. This tour may be long and a bit rushed because there is so much to see and was expensive at $40 per person. But it was worth the time and the money (and we are frugal people). We liked this better than the Vanderbilt Mansion in Hyde Park. Would recommend to others. If 3 hrs is too long for you, take one of the shorter tours.

This beautiful home features a lovely indoor/outdoor garden trip with quick 1 minute shuttle to the carriage house to see the cars and carriages of John D. Rockefeller and family. Only 18 people are allowed on each tour. You MUST make a reservation. Very reasonably priced. Overlooks the Hudson River and the New Jersey Pallisades. I confess, this was my fourth time. Shuttle takes you to the estate; no cars allowed there.

Very nice estate but I wish you got to see more of it. You are driven in a tour bus to the property and through a locked gate then down a road. Granted the tour @ 1/2 hours) does tell you alot about the art, gardens ,etc. The tour guide was very informative and friendly. Would be nice if it showed more of the rooms. Not allowed to take pics inside either. Wished we could walk around property more , not just looking out over the backyard from the balcony. Cost of tour... a bit too high even though it was long.2 1/2 hours for classic tour.
I enjoyed the Lynhurst estate better. It was cheaper, saw bedrooms, clothing and could walk around property on my own before or after tour. I could take pics in there too. They also decorated for Halloween.

This quintessential “American Palace” was the home of 3 generations of Rockefellers and displays in its house and extensive gardens what limitless wealth can do to transform a high spot overlooking the Hudson River into a country escape from New york City for the entire family. It is now a showplace for furnishings and, especially, the modern sculpture collection of Nelson Rockefeller. These sculptures can be found both inside and outside, all skillfully sited with respect to the splendid views of the Hudson. There are several choices of tours lasting 2 or more hours, including a 10-minute bus ride from the visitors’ center, and each offers ample exposure to the history of the house and the family as well as visits to the important rooms in the house and the very extensive gardens, replete with pools, fountains, grottoes and sculptures. This is a superbly beautiful house and garden and offers very interesting insights into this rich but philanthropic family.
