“Cayuga”
Reviewed September 19, 2013

It was a wonderful gathering for three sisters and their husbands! One more tick off of our bucket list! my advise is just relax and enjoy nature as you leisurely cruise the canal. Some of the towns are charming but I would suggest against staying docked overnight at Fairport - the trains NEVER stop blaring out their warning whistles. While necessary for safety, it is very disturbing when trying to sleep ~ for all 6 of us! The beautiful mansions and expansive lawns are stunning! Saw lively great blues, green herons and lots of local birds (including the kingfishers that ridein the winds along the shoreline).

“Fun on the Okechobee”
Reviewed September 8, 2013

At the end of July the 4 of us started our truly fun experience motoring down the Erie Canal on a boat named the Okechobee. Our trip started on Tuesday @ 2 PM and ended Saturday @ 9 AM. We rented a 2 bedroom, 2 bath houseboat with a galley kitchen I thoroughly enjoyed since I was the chef on this trip. We arrived a little early for our 2 PM check in, but our boat was ready for us. We moved ourselves into our home away from home and then ate our first meal on the boat - a picnic lunch we packed. Once we were done eating our orientation started. Josh went over everything we needed to know about the operation of the Okechobee. Once that was done it was time to get our captain (my husband) to do the practice run - going through a lock, docking, and a 360 turn. We passed with flying colors! Off we going heading west to Fairport (since it was the closest place to dock for the night). We docked, we partied on the boat (with the air conditioning on), we slept - the best we could with the train whistles and bridge bells! VINNY! was the saying of the evening! The next day we motored all day to Spencerport. Nice small town, picked up some provisions and had a wonderful steak dinner on the boat. The next day we turned around and headed east and stopped in Pittsford (another nice town), we walked the town had a delicious lunch in town and another great dinner on the boat. The next day we headed back to Fairport since it was close to our return. We had a wonderful dinner in town and settled in for the night. No air conditioning since the weather so beautiful - very quaint town, but noisy!! Saturday morning we headed out early and made it back to Macedon, docked the boat and said goodbye! We had so much fun. I have to say that this trip is not about where you will go, but the journey itself. I would do this again in a heartbeat and I would think fall would be absolutely gorgeous but certainly chilly! One important tip is when you receive information from MidLakes keep in mind the travel times between towns has to be doubled since the houseboat only travels 5-6 miles per hour and the times given are for travel 10 miles per hour!

Thank you for the great review, run-down of your trip and the wonderful pictures that you took the time to post. It sounds like you had a wonderful time. (Sorry that I must have forgot to mention that the New York State Cruising Guide bases their cruising speed at 10 mph, and the boat only does about 6mph.)

We hope to see you on the Erie Canal again soon!

“An Enjoyable Summer Outing”
Reviewed September 5, 2013

On an outing of our local safety engineering association, the cordial service provided by the folks at Mid-Lakes Navigation was complemented by the comfortable and scenic tour of sparkling Skaneateles Lake - with a running narrative about the history of the lake and the marvelous mansions surrounding it. We have been on both the lake and the Erie Canal tours several times and have not been disappointed.

(We were on the upper deck of the Judge Ben Wiles, and didn't find anything wrong with the tables or chairs. Rmcoz might have been talking about a different boat.)

“Had a relaxing time”
Reviewed August 31, 2013

We have been on this local sightseeing cruise many times. Unfortunately, I have to comment on a few negative aspects. First, the tables and seats are well past their usage time. The tables are rickety and the chairs are great for small children. They are not tall enough for normal people. I suggest that next year new ones be purchased that allow for proper height to see as well as to eat. Next observation is that not all of the rich and famous houses or properties were identified. The PA system could use some upgrading as, the boat motor is louder than the announcements. The food was absolutely great. The service is spot on and commend the service we had. I also like the fact they have partnered with Anyela's Winery. Their wines are fabulous. However, more of a selection would also be encouraged. Overall, this is a good value for you.

We are very proud of our great service and consider ourselves lucky to have a wonderful staff that makes that happen. We are also happy to partner with Anyelas to bring great, Skaneateles produced wines to the table.

We love the antique Mottville Chairs and think that they look great on the boat, but they are low for many people. There are some other chairs available, just ask. The PA system is a big challenge on a big steel boat. Adjustments are made on each cruise, and sometimes we don't get it just right. Please, always feel free to ask for more (or less) volume. The commentary does skip over some of the homes along the lakeshore, for some we just give history, not including the current owners. The omissions are generally due to requests for privacy from the owners.

Thank you for your review. It's great suggestions like yours that prompt changes and keep making the cruises better and better.

“Canal boat rental”
Reviewed August 30, 2013

This was such a fun trip! Boat was super clean, homey, and well equipped.
Owners were friendly and helpful, orientation very good, and we had little difficulty learning to navigate, with only previous canoe experience. Lots of herons, turtles, beautiful scenery, and interesting towns with sense of canal history, and good facilities for boaters. Locks and lift bridges really fun, and the operators were very helpful. All in all a great week - highly recommended.

Thank you for your great review! Sounds like you had a great week! The boats are super easy for a novice to navigate and the canal really does have to much to see and do. I am glad that you enjoyed the trip.
