Quaint Hotel. We stayed in room 2. Large comfortable beds. No phones in room so no room service!! Steep staircase to carry your bags up to. No one in a rush to do anything. The complimentary continental breakfast was very nice. Another guest mentioned it was an idea to get down early or they ran out, so we did. Enjoyed the drinks in the bar and dinner was very good. Dessert menu a bit unimaginative.
The hotel is not in sight of the sea but only a short drive. Great location and would recommend it for a short relaxing break.

My husband & I stayed at The Shelter Island House for the weekend. The hotel is pretty, homey yet it still has an upscale feel. Paula at the front desk was a doll, she was very friendly and make us feel at home. The only reason why they did not get 5 stars is that there was no restaurant or bar service on Saturday afternoon. We wanted to spend the day at the pool but needed to get up get dressed and go into town for lunch. Not sure why they wouldnt have food service on a weekend during the summer but thats a big mistake. Yet overall I would still give them a very good rating.

I took one look at the appealing online photos of Shelter Island House and knew instantly that this was the style I craved for our last-gasp-of-summer getaway. But I am happy to report that this posh haven still managed to exceed our expectations. The handsomely furnished rooms are fresh, pristine, and spacious. The beach was barely a five-minute walk and even quicker to drive. And every time we wanted to swim, my husband and I found that we had the pool out back all to ourselves. The homemade multigrain and chocolate croissants at breakfast were to die for... and do not miss the avocado fries (more like avocado tempura) on the dinner menu, half-price daily (along with a tempting selection of BOGO cocktails at Happy Hour daily from 4-7. The onsite restaurant also offers phenomenal food and frequent specials, like prime rib, mashed potatoes and salad for $25 every Thursday (featuring a mammoth slab of meat we wish we had shared). It was a pleasure to dine there each night, then walk down the hall and fall blissfully into a plush and comfy king-size bed. The staff was also invariably pleasant and welcoming. Worth every penny! We'll be back!

My boyfriend and I spent a long weekend at Shelter Island House and absolutely loved our stay. We both noticed the staff's great attention to detail from the moment we got there. Everyone was so welcoming and accommodating from the get-go. It is a smaller hotel with a bed-and-breakfast vibe, but with lots of amenities you would want from a boutique hotel. We stayed on the first floor, which was really convenient, because we could get from our room to the restaurant/bar to the pool really easily. I believe some other reviewers mentioned issues with noise, but honestly, the bar was packed one night after we went to bed and we had no trouble sleeping at all.

We kept remarking that it felt like we were staying at a friend's beautiful country estate. The hotel is very centrally located, so that we were able to walk or bike to Sunset Beach in the afternoon, and bike to restaurants in different parts of the island. The hotel itself has a great restaurant, and we especially enjoyed the Sunday brunch with live music on the porch. We were also happily surprised by their happy hour, which we enjoyed by the pool each day from 4-7pm.

The staff was so friendly and it was nice to see the owner of the hotel and the owner of the restaurant on the grounds so often. We never felt like we were bothering anyone with our million questions about how to get around, where we should eat, etc. I actually felt like the staff were always there to make friendly conversation.

Our only qualm with this place was the super hard beds and pillows (which I found odd, given the plush lounge chairs and throw pillows out by the pool). The wifi was also kind of spotty (though I guess the point of vacation is to disconnect anyway). Not enough of an issue to take away a star. We will definitely be coming back next year!

This hotel truly made my visit to Shelter Island perfect. The rooms were beautiful, and the house truly felt like a home. The pool was gorgeous and perfect for relaxing.

The food was absolutely delicious, be it for brunch or dinner. I strongly recommend the octopus, as well as the tempura avocado. The poolside bar and indoor bar each created great atmospheres to hang out on a summer night.

The staff truly made you feel pampered, whether it was waiters and waitresses in the restaurant, bartenders outside or inside, or Suzanne, who was everywhere. They truly care about making your experience the best it can be.

I would absolutely recommend staying here, and know I will again in the future.
