“Great Hike”
Reviewed July 9, 2014

Wonderful hiking trails...bring plenty of water and binoculars for bird watching. Go early to stay cool and bring bug spray.
Staff have trail maps.

“Beautiful!”
Reviewed June 11, 2014

The Mashomack Preserve is probably my favorite part of Shelter Island. Nearly a third of the island is covered by the beautiful nature preserve. There are a series of well marked trails for hiking, with a great map, friendly volunteers, and a nice visitor's center. We walked the second longest of the trails, which was a beautiful six miles through a variety of terrains.

Can't recommend this enough - fantastic bit of nature on Shelter Island.

“Pristine Preserve”
Reviewed April 18, 2014

Walking these trails, you can forget you are so close to civilization. Bald eagles have been spotted, the Blue herons and egrets call it home and you might see a fox or two. Pack some water for the walk, especially the long trail.
This alone is worth a trip to Shelter Island, which has much more to offer with great sunrises, sunsets, beaches and places to eat and drink.

“Woodlands, wetlands, hidden glades and water views”
Reviewed November 25, 2013 via mobile

Mashomack Preserve covers almost a third of picturesque Shelter Island. There are miles of beautiful hiking trails and creeks and beautiful shorelines that can be explored on kayak tours. Great nature center and short walking trail with fun displays. Good calendar of events. Absolutely worth a visit.

“Beautiful Preserve, Lots of trails”
Reviewed October 26, 2013

A very nice preserve with several trails to hike from 1.5 miles to over 11! Well maintained and provide a diverse view of the wildlife on Shelter Island. A good workout due to the hills but definitely worth it!
