Got there just before a very early closing time (5 pm) for a summer day. Only had time to go through the Visitor's Center before we were rushed out.

Well marked trials, friendly staff, different trail length options. Beware of ticks, wear light clothing and long pants

My husband and I were not really appropriately attired for a hike, so we opted for the red trail which was 1.5 miles. It was so peaceful and it is such a lovely time of year, not too chilly and some of the spring flowers were peaking through. We will definitely be back to tackle the 10 miler.

Mashomack is absolutely beautiful and a must-see if you go to Shelter Island! You can decide the amount of walking you want to do. There are trails in lengths of 1.5 mi, 3.5 mi, 6 mi, and 10 miles. We did the 3.5 trail and are so glad we did because the meadow is absolutely gorgeous. We even saw some bluebirds! I would definitely wear white socks and be prepared for tick season, but the trails are pretty clean and the edges can be avoided. The scenery is really a sight to see and I won't be able to stay away from this place on future trips!

Bring bug spray, good walking shoes, and go to the bathroom beforehand. There are restrooms, but they are more akin to indoor outhouses.
