The American is an oasis in Central NYS. The atmosphere in any given moment can range from tranquil to festive, depending on the comings and goings of visitors and locals alilke. The renovation was superbly done and the hosts and their staff work painstakingly to give both lodging and dining guests a great experience. As with a stay in a B & B, enjoy the American Hotel with an open heart and open mind, always remembering that you are indeed a guest in another's "home." Persnickety people need not travel here or to any other lovely inn or B & B...stay at a Holiday Inn

My partner and I happened upon the little town of Sharon Springs while on the way to Syracuse for a work related convention. At the time, the owners of the American Hotel were running a cafe and had just purchased the hotel building and it was in a near state of ruin. Because we both have degrees in Architecture they were kind enough to show us through the interiors that were just starting demolition. Frankly, we thought they had bitten off more than they could chew. We went on our way and sort of forgot about them until May of 2001 when an invitation arrived announcing the opening party for the American Hotel. Even though we live 2 hours away we drove up for the party and back the same night when it was over. We were so impressed that we booked a weekend and returned very soon.

We return to the hotel often now - trying to get there for dinner at least once every six weeks and to spend an overnight every three months or so. The little town of Sharon springs is improving slowly over time and we love walking there and observing the changes. Cooperstown IS easily accessable via beautiful back country roads.

The bar and restaurant serve nothing but the best food and drink - prepared for you after you order so that it can be completely made to your liking. The meals are well paced and allow time to hold conversations and enjoy the dining experience. We have never had a meal we did not like. We ALWAYS have the maple cake for dessert - an item still made from scratch by one of the owners.

The hotel is beautiful (sorry, no tv's folks) and the huge porches on the first and second floors make great places for lounging with a drink and a book. Occasionally you'll catch a hint of the Sulfer Springs from up the street - a strange part of the town's charm.

Finally, the hotel would be nothing without it's staff. The owners are very attentive and have assembled a group of employees who seem to love their work and the hotel. It's nice to be greated by staff who at least remember your face if not your name. Special kudos to the wait staff who always get it right - attentive but not pushy, friendly but not overbearing.

We come to this hotel for a break from the daily routine and leave refreshed every time. It's as if we've been on a much longer holiday much farther from home. We are always sad to leave and happy to know we will be back. There are not enough good things to be said about this place.

I use Tripadvisor often and was dissapointed to see one of the reviews was so negative (with no supporting argument for the statements posted) so I thought I'd put my two cents in. If you are passing through and need a place to eat and/or sleep or just want a break from the "Rat Race" give the American Hotel a try. And just to be sure, we are in no way affiliated with the hotel, the owners, or the employees. We ARE two big fans!

The gracious owners welcome you to their renovated historical hotel. Rooms are a bit small but extremely clean. All bathrooms are new and towels and linens are of very good quality. The location is about 25 mins from Cooperstown and that is about all there is out that way except for antiquing. The Inn itself provides a very good restaurant serving interesting meals in the moderate to high price range.

We were there when most rooms were empty so I can not tell you if noise travels between rooms as it can in older buildings.
