A wonderful, relaxing cafe to experience. Sit back and enjoy fine
local music, tasty snacks and drinks-no alcohol, and the ambiance
of a comfortable intimate spot in downtown Schenectady.

“Relaxed atmosphere, aging-hippie casual, great food - a real treat!”

The Moon and River Cafe by itself is an excellent reason to come to Schenectady. It's located in the historic Stockade, 10 minutes from where I live, and I would visit there much more frequently were it not for the sometimes-difficult street parking there. Inside, you are cradled in an artsy, funky, progressive world where the music is mellow, the couches comfortable, the walls full of local art, and the tables feature books, goldfish swimming in a bowl, and gorgeous fresh vegetables. This is a place to hang out. Though there are only a few tables, I've never been there when it's busy. It's a more or less one-man operation, with owner Richard (who created this paradise) doing all the cooking and most of the serving. The menu is extensive, with many Mexican and vegetarian options. Everything comes perfectly cooked and in just the right portion size: you are satisfied but not overeating, you savor the delicious melding of flavors, and you know this stuff is good for you. The cafe features delicious baked goods, including organic and vegan breads and cookies and cupcakes. Coffee is very good, but no free refills (understandable because, if they were free, people would just take up space there all day long and this independent businessman would make only $1.) The cafe hosts cool local musicians, discussion groups, political gatherings, whatever Richard feels would contribute to the atmosphere and the community. I would expect a place like this in a much bigger city. The Moon and River is an acknowledged gem of Schenectady, enjoyed by young and old, a refuge for those of us who remember the sixties fondly. Come and enjoy the vibe!
